Year 5 homework (in books) to be handed in on WEDNESDAY 21st October (last day of the half term)

Reading

As always reading remains the most important homework. I am so proud of the class as many children have challenged themselves to read tricky novels with high point scores. These books demand a lot of comprehension. It has been lovely to see children believing in themselves and going for it. We now have a selection of cracking books being swapped and treasured by the class- it is funny to see a book go into the quarantine box and for other pupils to work out on what day it will be free to nab! Maths

We are ploughing through addition and subtraction strategies in class. We have explored column addition with large numbers and with a lot of carrying. We have also linked this back to part whole models and the children have been pretty confident. I have scanned in the work and you can find 10 calculations to workout - press the button below. We have also glued squared paper into their homework books so that they can carefully lay out their columns!

Once you have completed these don’t forget to do 5 minutes a day on your Rockstars!!! That’s all it will take! Be resilient! Just a note here, please don’t complete 10/15 minutes on one night and feel you have cracked it. The program responds to the child on a daily basis- it works out the average daily focus for the teacher and the time for the previous three days- so I can see who is active. Please find a fun routine with this so you’re doing it every day for 5 minutes- Thank you"! Once you have moved about 30 levels it will let you do another gig and then you can see your progress.

Spelling/English

This week we explored homophones!! It is so funny to think we have so many words that sound exactly the same but have very different meaning! For example, flour and flower, wait and weight etc! This week we would like you to investigate homophones there are a lot!!! Write as many as you in your homework book! Take care not to fill it! This is a great activity to in which you can practice your handwriting at the same time!

RE- Research

We have explored the issue of Global Warming in RE and we have learnt what Pope Francis has to say about looking after our “common home”. We also briefly discussed the activist Greta Thunberg and the determination she has to educate everyone about climate change. She explains that once you know and understand the problem you realise that you cannot turn away - we have to act. There have been others before Greta, people who have been moved to care for God’s world some in very humble ways. Can you find out more about these people- you will notice they are saints and they lived along time ago, but what did they do?
