What an amazing start to the new Spring term we have had here in Year 2! The children sprung into school with springs in their steps ready for their new learning adventures to begin! We began by introducing our new focus virtues for this term ‘grateful and generous’, and it was lovely to hear all about what the children were grateful for during their half term breaks. We also discussed the term generous and how we can be generous in so many different ways. These conversations will continue and develop as we begin the journey together through Lent towards Easter.
In English, we have now moved onto the fictional part of our ‘Amazing Birds’ topic. We revisited some of our previous learning about birds before the children made predictions about what they think might happen in our new focus story ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. We then read a description of the main character Plop and used the language and vocabulary to help us to draw our own interpretations of the baby barn owl. The author clearly created some great images in the children’s minds from what I could see in their illustrations! We also read and acted out a lovely poem called day and night which helped us to distinguish the differences between what happens in the day and night. I wonder whether Plop will prefer the day or night …?
In maths we have moved onto learning about 2D and 3D shapes. This week we have revisited previous shape knowledge and have reminded ourselves of important vocabulary that we use when describing shapes and their properties.
Outdoor PE was filled with so many smiles this week as we started our new ‘Playground games through the years’ topic. The children learned how to play stuck in the mud, hospital tig and line tig, and we discussed the importance of speaking kindly to each other, playing respectfully and following rules. It has been wonderful to see so many of the children playing these games together at playtimes!
Let’s Celebrate
Thank you for being such a ‘Cooperative Roger Robin’ in our class Naomi! You can never do enough to help the people around you and you always speak with such kindness and respect. You are an encouraging and positive learning partner who always takes the time to celebrate the achievements of others. We are all so lucky to have such a caring friend!
Toby – you have been a real reflective learner this week. You have been thinking carefully about the quality of your work and have been trying really hard with your handwriting and presentation. You have also been pushing yourself to think much deeper in your learning. This can really be heard in discussions and seen in your written responses and it’s also creating a lot of pondering moments amongst your friends. Well done!

World book day is next Thursday 3rd March and we will be celebrating its 25th anniversary! For this day, we would like to invite the children to dress up as their favourite book characters, it would be great if the children could bring the book also with them, so they can share this with the rest of the class.
Don’t forget our open afternoon on Friday 18th March to look at your child’s learning. You book this through the form found on the last week’s blog on the discovery page.
If you haven’t already, please book your Parent meeting via the newsletter on the discovery page. These meetings will be held on Wednesday 9th March and Wednesday 23rd March from 2:30pm - 5:30pm.
