Year One Weekly Blog - 11th September 2024

Religious Education

This week in RE we have been learning all about who created the world and how it came to be. The children learnt that God made the world and we looked at his 6 days of creation - light and darkness, the sky, plants and trees, the sun moon and stars, water, birds and fish, Adam and Eve. We thought of our favourite things that God made, this included the stars, the Christmas holiday, our families, flowers and more.

We then had a think about how we know that God loves us, we know he loves us because he created the world, he gave us families and a community and he gave us a safe home to live in.

Magic moments

We have had MANY magic moments this week, our class favourite being our fruit tasting session on Monday! In English we are reading about Supertato, so we decided it would be fun for us to get started by tasting some fruit and using lots of different adjectives to describe them, the children then went on to create a fruity poem together which we recorded for you all to see. The children decided to plant the seeds from our fruit tasting as an experiment to see if anything would grow. We then introduced our book (we have only read Page 1 so far) and the children made their own predictions about what was going to happen next.

In our Science lessons we are learning all about changes. The children identified the changing seasons and how we can spot them. We identified that we are in the Autumn season - we know this because it is windy and rainy, the leaves are changing colour and are beginning to fall off the trees. We identified the different traits of each season and the different holidays that come with them. Our challenge this week was to go into the playground to spot different clues that we are now in the Autumn season, each group found a different clue!

Within History we are learning all about the Royal Family. We learnt what a “Monarch” is and identified the different special objects that you use within your coronation to earn the title of King or Queen. (Robe Royal, the Orb, the Crown and the Spectre) The children enjoyed watching the Coronation of both Queen Elizabeth and King Charles, they even joined in with the trumpets!

We have had lots of fun in our choosing time creating dens, playing with cars, drawing, reading and many more. We enjoyed our PE sessions focusing on overarm throwing and rolling.

Going deeper - conversations at home.

In HRSE this week we looked at bullying, how we can spot this and how we make it stop. We thought about the yukky feelings that come with this and what we should do if we ever see this happening.

We began My Happy Mind this week, the children learnt all about the HAP Team and how they work together. We learnt some tricky names for the parts of our brain (hippocampus, amygdala and pre frontal cortex) - these still need practising as they got jumbled up in our mouths a lot. We met our brains, found out that they are pink and wrinkly and that they are the size of our two fists put together.

Lets celebrate!

Our certificates for fantastic learning and becoming our learning characters go to…. Jemima Ely and Diana Nichols! You became a Co Operative Roger Robin and a determined Sadie Spider this week and we were very impressed with how you encouraged yourself and others.

Our STAR award this week goes to Antonio! You have been a very attentive friend this week, ensuring all of your friends have all the equipment they need for every lesson. This weekend you get to take Icicles home for a weekend adventure together! We can’t wait to hear all about it.

The lunch time awards this week go to Sydney and Poppy!

We have had a great week again and many of you could have been chosen, but a huge well done to those who were chosen! We are very proud of your hard work and determination this week, you have never given up!

We even got to celebrate with a dance or two in class this week due to the children filling up our star jar and winning a surprise.

Reminders / important information

We sent home reading packs this week, please ensure that you are reading with your children as much as possible (also make a note of this in their reading diaries so we know when to move the children on) and completing the work tasks. The handwriting sheets are for you to practise at home, we do the same sheet in school so these don’t need returning. Please send the reading packs in every day so we are able to read with the children in class too.

Lots of you sent in T-Shirts for art - thank you for that. Art began this week, if you haven’t done this yet please do this ASAP.

When receiving our STAR award in assembly for upholding our school virtues, the child will get to take home our class teddy Icicles for the weekend and have an adventure together. Icicles comes with a diary for you to complete a diary entry as a family and add in any pictures of the fun you had together. The children are very excited about this and we look forward to hearing all about your adventures together on the following Monday when you bring Icicles back to class.

Finally, if you haven’t completed medical and consent forms, please do this at your earliest opportunity.

We sent home small pictures of your child on their first day of year one, if you’d rather have a larger version just pop me an email and I’ll send those over to you.

We loved seeing those of you invited to our celebration assembly and look forward to seeing more of you in the future!
