Year 2 weekly blog - 20th Sept "Rainbows are a promise!"

This week we have listened to the story of Noah. We where inspired by this man and his family. Noah was full of faith and listened carefully to what God wanted him to do. Even though others thought he was mad, Noah believed and acted on his beliefs. We realised that the scribe that wrote the story wanted us to understand how much God loves those who are good and follow him. God sent the flood showing his power but he also sent the rainbow- a sign that he would not flood the world again. God knows us and knows that we are all able to love and be loved. He heals the world so that we can know him.

On Tuesday Ruby, Theo and Benjamin led us in prayer during the children’s’ liturgy. They helped us to think about following Jesus. In the reading (read by Ruby) Jesus asked us not to delay and put other things before him. Our mission was to go home and do something kind straight away. Did you notice mum and dad?

MAGIC MOMENTS - LEARNING

In English we continued to listen to traditional fairy tales - they are fun! Then we looked a little more closely. We noticed how adjectives are used to make the places and people come alive! By Friday we were writing our own super sentences with noun phrases for example: The spooky, dark forest. The delicious, chocolate house. There was much excitement about using a comma! In maths we explored word problems with groups of ten, placed multiplies in the right place on a number line and finally played a game which involved adding and subtracting multiplies of ten! We used super scientific language in science while playing a game of MRS GREN. Miss Lavelle was super impressed with our coding this week and Mrs Mather had a lovely time with everyone’s cuddle friends in art. Energy was spent in both PE lessons and our spelling is coming on a treat! See below pictures of us enjoying our new play zones outside!

Our Happy Mind lesson this week taught us all about “neuroplasticity” - if we practice something over and over our brain makes connections and grows! Our little brain badge was given to Seamus this week - he was able to explain the three parts of the brain already!

Finally, in our Kids Safe lesson we explored how to stay safe on-line. Most of our conversation was around playing games suitable to our age on-line. We talked about how shooting and chasing games made for older children can make us feel very stressed and anxious. We realised that this meant our amygdala is working hard as we don’t feel safe! Below is the letter for you which accompanies this session.

GOING DEEPER CONVERSATION

Ask mum and dad, gran and Grandad what have they practiced over and over again? Did they feel their brain growing (neuroplasticity). Can they show you how good they are at it now? What do you want to practice? Keep growing your brain!

LET’S CELEBRATE

This week our learning certificates went to:

Toby, it is a joy to teach you! I have noticed how excited and engaged you are during all the lessons but especially in maths and science. You sit up and track the teacher so carefully – this really helps you to make sense of all the new learning!

Heidi – you are so focused and mature! I can’t wait to see how much progress you make this year. I’m especially impressed with your careful handwriting. Thank you for allowing me to use it this week as an example to the class. I know this really inspired everyone.

Our STAR for being attentive and discerning went to Evana.

Our Lunchtime Awards go to:

Role Model : Matilda

Marvellous Manners: Henry

The highlight of the week was our Leadership assembly. This exciting and annual event celebrates all the leaders in school. This year Mrs Gregan reminded us all that we are all leaders. We can all be STARS - shining and helping others. You will have noticed that we all came home with a special badge to show which house family we belong to! During the assembly our new Class Counsellors were announced. Thank you to all the children who took part and put themselves forward - you are all brave Timmy tortoises! This year our counsellors are:

Ronnie and Ruby - congratulations"!
