Year One Weekly Blog - 4th October

Magic moments

RE

This week in RE we learnt about Jesus and his Disciples. We saw how Jesus taught his disciples to pray, how to do this, why we do this and what we should say. We discussed the things we might pray about and the meaning of the words in The Lords Prayer. We learnt that hallowed means that we place God above all else. We then started this weeks rosary challenge and watched the Little liturgies video’s to help us.

English

In English we finally finished our story Supertato. We started the week by predicting Evil Pea’s next troublesome move and we found out that he had escaped the freezer again! Some children noticed Evil Pea in their homes! We devised a plan to trap him in jelly, then found out Supertato did this too! We created our instructions and then followed them to make the jelly and left it to set. When we came back to check if our traps had worked, they had! Evil Pea and his evil friends had been trapped in our jelly. The children had a taste and said the jelly tasted like peas.

Maths

We started our maths this week looking at shapes, we used the word rotate and learnt that this meant to turn it, we also looked at tangram’s. We know that 7 shapes fit together to make one big square. The children made their own tangrams and used their 2D shapes to create some pictures. We then looked at numerals and discussed what this meant. We played a game in pairs where we chose a numeral and our partner has to find the amount of objects to match the numeral on the card. We then looked at ordinal numbers.

History

In History this week we looked further into coronations. What is a coronation? Why do we need one? What special objects are used within a coronation? We compared the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth and King Charles and began noticing some similarities and differences. We then began retelling the sequence of events ready to act this out in groups next week.

Science

In Science this week we have been doing observations, this is a word we learnt and we learnt that we observe not only with our eyes but also with our other senses. We had a selection of autumnal objects round the classroom and used our senses to observe them and describe them to each other. We then got our magnifying glasses and headed off on a hunt to observe some more.

Going deeper.

For our HRSE session this week we have been learning about what to do if our adults at home argue. We discussed that this was a very normal thing and that lots of people have disagreements, this even happens at school. But as a class we came up with some strategies of what to do if this is happening and it is giving us some yukky feelings.

My Happy Mind was all about the different situations that our brains react to. We know that even though our brains look the same, they react to things in different ways, some children may enjoy rollercoasters whereas other children may be scared of them. We have selected our My Happy Mind Hero for this week and this is Jaxon! Jaxon was in charge of happiness this week and helped us all to be calm and happy using happy breathing.

A conversation starter - what situations may take place at the weekends that one family member may like but another family member may dislike? What could you do if it was you that disliked it?

Important information and reminders.

Homework went out on Tuesday and is due back in on Monday. There is also optional homework for his half term on the homework blog. These are some activities that you can do at home to encourage some home learning.

Some children will be started on AR Reader this week, this means they will be sent home with an extra book each week. You will have this book for a week then at the end of the week your child will be “quizzed”. This helps us to get a bigger picture of where the children are at with their reading and only enhance these skills even more.

Harvest is in one week! We are celebrating this on Friday 11th October - year one are collecting shower gel this year please continue sending this in and thank you to those who have already done this.

We are celebrating world mental health day on Thursday 10th October. The children are allowed to wear something yellow, this can be anything! They are asked to bring in £1 in support of this.
