Year One Weekly Blog - 11th October

Magic moments

RE

In RE this week we began our new topic “Prophecy and Promise”. We talked about Mary and why we think God chose her to be the mother of Jesus. The children believed it was because she was kind and a special person.

We learnt about Gabriel and how he delivered this message to Mary. We then said our Hail Mary and discussed each line to understand the meaning behind it.

We continued with the Rosary challenges this week and the children prayed together each day of the week.

Today we went to mass, we took our collection of shower gel (thank you so much for your contributions) and celebrated the harvest festival with the rest of the school.

English

We read through our story again and wrote our story map this week! The children worked out the beginning, build up, problem, resolution and ending within our story and came up with drawings to represent the different parts within our story.

We then used our story maps to write our story, the children showed so much resilience throughout this all the adults in the room were very impressed. We celebrated this with a full star jar and an extra 5 minutes play time.

Maths

This week we learnt about tetrominoes and pentominoes. We know that tetrominoes are made up of 4 squares and pentominoes are made up of 5, we used our own squares to make these ourselves. We then carried on with ordering numbers to 10.

History

This week was our performance of the coronation. We spent the previous week watching the coronations and discussing the main elements of each one. This week we dressed up and stepped into our roles ready to re-enact the King and Queen’s coronation. The children enjoyed dressing up and were fantastic actors and actresses.

Science

Science this week was all about living things and their habitats. We looked at what different animals had over their skin to protect them from danger and to keep them warm, we thought of shells, fur, scales and quills. We noticed the different things about animals and discussed this with our talking partner and wondered about different facts. We then looked at habitats and remembered that this is where animals live. We looked at the polar bear, we decided its habitat was cold, so its fur was there to help keep him warm whilst living in the ice.

Going deeper.

During My Happy Mind this week, we have reviewed everything we learnt so far. We took part in a quiz as a class and got 100%! We know what our brains help us with, we know how best to help our brains, we know what they look like, what they are for and how to help them grow. We revisited the word neuroplasticity and took part in a challenge to show us how this works. We wrote a sentence with our regular writing hand, then tried with our other! We compared our writing to show us how our neuroplasticity works. We remember what the HAP team stands for and their jobs in our brains. Year ones brains are strong and growing!

We have selected our My Happy Mind Hero for this week and this is Sydney! Sydney was in charge of happiness this week and helped us all to be calm and happy using happy breathing techniques.

A conversation starter - can you remember what the hippocampus, amygdala and pre frontal cortex do?

Lets celebrate!

Flu vaccinations are taking place on Monday 14th October if you have requested this for your child.

Next half term we will be starting our DT lessons on Thursday afternoons. As this can be a tricky session, Mrs. Mather would like to invite some parents/grandparents to assist in the lessons. These sessions are on the following dates: Thursday 7th November, Thursday 14th November, Thursday 5th December and Thursday 12th December. These afternoons are split into two groups, one starting at 1pm and the other starting at 2pm. You are very welcome to join us for the whole afternoon, but if you could only do an hour that would be much appreciated too.
