Year One Weekly Blog - 29th November

Magic moments

RE

RE this week has been all about our advent promises. This year our promises are a gift for baby Jesus. We discussed what kind of things babies need and what we could give to Jesus. The children came up with lots of things such as:

  • a blanket

  • a teddy

  • a cushion

  • some milk

  • a crown

  • love

  • friendship

  • respect

  • kindness

  • a hug

We created our promises to make them look like a present so that when you open it up the gift is inside. The children were all very independent and creative and the promises look brilliant! This is a task that the whole school are taking part in and there will be a new display created from them in our worship area.

English

We finally finished our book Dangerous this week, the children have been left on many cliffhangers and have always asked for more, but they persevered and now we have made it to the end. We discussed the 5 parts to a story, the beginning, the build up, the problem, the resolution and the ending. We worked out those parts of our story ready to make our story maps, the children drew pictures to represent each part and worked really hard to make them look great. We are now using these story maps to write out the story in our books, I can’t wait to see what the children produce.

Maths

Maths this week was all about one more than and one less than again, this skill has now been mastered and put to work. The children worked practically to use manipulatives to help them work out which number comes before and which one comes after.

Science

In science this week, we transferred our knowledge of plants to trees. We worked out their different parts and learnt that the top of a tree is called the crown. We looked at many unusual trees on the board and came up with lots of amazing “I wonder why…” questions. I was blown away by the amount of questions we had, by their observation skills and their vocabulary. We then took our new knowledge of bark - it protects the tree, outside to have an investigation. What do you notice about the bark? Does it look the same? Different? It was a great lesson and I was impressed by the knowledge from them all.

A conversation starter - if a tree only had one root, what would happen?

Lets celebrate!

Well done to our certificate winners this week, we have had a determined learner in Bertie and a creative learner in George. You have both worked brilliantly this week and we are very proud of you, keep it up.

Our Virtue Star this week goes to…. Hector! You have been so intentional all week, super focused and ready to learn! You are always making the right choices, Well done!

Our lunchtime winners this week are Izabelle and Marcel. Our role model was Marcel and Izabelle had excellent manners. Well done you two!

Important information and reminders.

Next week is going to be another big week of rehearsals! We have finally managed to run through all scenes separately a couple of times and now need to put it all together so that the children can see how everything goes throughout. They have worked SO hard this week, myself and Mrs Hotchkiss have been blown away by their courage and bravery getting up on stage.

I asked that some of you send in costumes next week, please disregard this message. Our dress rehearsal will now be on Monday 9th December. Please send in ballerina costumes on this day, for everyone else please can you send your child in with a white vest and some white leggings/shorts to go underneath their costumes.

As a school we are trying to be more eco friendly to care for our common home. We ask that this year instead of doing whole class individual cards that your child instead makes one card for the whole class that can then be displayed in our worship area for everyone to see.

I hope you have an enjoyable and restful weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday morning.
