Magic moments
RE
This week we learnt about the loss and the finding of Jesus. Mary and Joseph went to the temple to thank God for their baby boy, but when they set off back home Jesus didn’t go with them. We discussed the feelings of Mary and Joseph and the important thing that Jesus said to them.
Today we also joined our Parish Centre for their coffee morning. The children took some pictures to colour and were greeted with juice and biscuits! They had a lovely morning spent with the parishioners and some of their drawings have been displayed in our worship area.
English
English this week was looking further into our characters in The Gruffalo. We wrote some sentences using adjectives and our connective and. This is something we will be working hard on this half term, knowing when to use it and how. We then made a wanted poster for The Gruffalo for trying to eat the mouse!
Maths
We moved onto our new topic in maths this week using the knowledge we have learnt about decade numbers. We are learning about the tens and ones in the number and what they represent, e.g in 26 we have 2 tens and 6 ones. This is something you could work on at home! We looked a the patterns when counting up and practised counting forwards and backwards.
History
This week we learnt about Learie Constantine! We learnt who he is, where he was from and how he is significant. The children made a little fact file with the things they learnt about him, we found out that he played cricket for a team in Lancashire!
Science
We began our topic on animals this week, we spent some time identifying different animals from zoomed in pictures using our observation skills. We also discussed what an animal is, they are living beings that eat, drink, walk, sleep and love, just like us! We discussed that we are animals and compared the different things we do in every day life that animals do too.
Lets celebrate!

Important information and reminders.
Our educational trip is all booked in and I am still looking to have some volunteers to join us for the day on Tuesday 11th February. The children will be travelling via coach and will be out for the whole day from 10am. Please could you email me next week to let me know whether your child will have a school dinner or a packed lunch on this day. j.hanlon@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk
As you know at the end of Year One, the children will complete a phonics screening, as we are nearly half way through the year (I don’t know where the time has gone!) I have begun doing some mock screenings with each child. I began these yesterday and will be continuing to do them throughout next week, I can then find out where the gaps are in the children’s learning in order to fill them. So if your child has come home with something new that you haven’t seen before, it is just a little reward to say well done for completing the check. This is not something to be worried about, the sooner we find the gaps, the sooner we can plug them so they are fully prepared for the check at the end of the year. I will discuss these results with you on the upcoming parents day.
Next half term myself, Mrs Hotchkiss and Miss Drummond will be introducing a new style of maths homework from the maths hub, in the form of games! To introduce this to you we are going to be inviting you to a stay and play session to learn how to complete this homework at home. I have uploaded the details below and a form for you to fill in if you are able to make it, everything will be explained in more detail within this session.
MATHS MASTERY FOR PARENTS -We have become part of the Maths Mastery Parents Project with the Maths Hub. We are running fun maths workshops for parents in Reception Year 1 and Year 2. We are inviting parents into school to learn games alongside their children - these games will then be taken home straight away and in the following weeks as part of each classes home learning.
