Year One Weekly Blog - 24th January

Magic moments

RE

RE this week was all about Jesus and his mission. We heard about Jesus’ time in the synagogue and the things he revealed to the Jewish people who were present. We discussed what his mission was and how he would achieve it.

The children then thought about how we share the good news of Jesus with others, we come to school, we go to Church, we pray in the chapel. We then thought about what the good news means for us? Each child had a different response to this question, whether that be hugging a friend, helping people in need, going to church with our families.

Conversation starter - What was Jesus’ mission? What did he come to Earth to do?

English

We finished our book “The Gruffalo” this week, we ended this story by creating our own monsters, whether they be scary or cute! We then spent some time describing these monsters, what do they look like? Where do they live? What do they eat? The children were very creative and thought of some great describing words.

We then started our new book “Where The Wild Things Are”. The children started by asking some who, what, where, when and why questions - ensuring that they were using the correct punctuation at the end of their sentences. We then used our inference to answer our own questions about Max from what we have read so far.

Maths

We started our maths this week by sequencing events across a week by using the key words - today, yesterday and tomorrow. Some children found this concept a little bit tricky, so needed a little extra support, but we have started using this vocabulary every day to help make it more fluent in our everyday language. We then started counting forwards from 0 to 100 crossing the tens boundary, this is something we will continue to work on next week!

History

History this week was all about how Learie Constantine became a significant cricketer. We discussed how he started, the struggles he faced and how he ended up being one of the most well paid athletes in England. The children then made some posters about his career.

Science

We learnt two of the animal types this week - mammals and birds. We discussed the different things that put an animal into that group, for example a mammal is warm blooded, gives birth to babies and has skin, fur or hair. We were asked the question “Are whales the only mammals that can swim?”, this tricked a lot of children! Is it never true, sometimes true or always true? We watched an interesting video on all the different mammals that are able to swim, meaning the answer is sometimes true. We recalled these facts later on to begin creating a little fact file.

Lets celebrate!

Well done to our certificate winner this week, we have had a determined and enthusiastic learner in Alex. You have worked brilliantly this week and we are very proud of you, keep it up.

Important information and reminders.

Our educational trip is all booked in and I am still looking to have some volunteers to join us for the day on Tuesday 11th February - we will be going to Ribby Hall’s Wild Discovery to learn all about the animals and see them in real life to put our knowledge to the test! The children will be travelling via coach and will be out for the whole day from 10am. Please could you email me next week to let me know whether your child will have a school dinner or a packed lunch on this day, I need to let Jaqcui know ASAP so she can order in the things we need for our lunches. j.hanlon@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk

At Our Lady’s we encourage a love for reading all across school, this is something we know the children in Year One are great at, they do have a love for reading, but we believe that everyone can always read more. Myself, Mrs Ely and Mrs Maano have been discussing ways to help encourage the children to read even more than they do already. The word set journey is a huge hit and the children love challenging themselves and creating some healthy competition with their friends in class. As this has worked so well we are going to introduce a reading challenge. We will all start at the same place and make our way through space in order to reach for the stars! To move up through the levels (and get something exciting along the way) the children have to read at home 4 times a week. This will be their Read Write Inc books that we send home, they need four signatures in their reading diary to move up a level.

Parent’s Day is being held on Friday 14th February for you all to chat to me and see how your child is doing. The booking for this will be put online today, make sure you get on quickly to secure the time that is best for you,

Next half term myself, Mrs Hotchkiss and Miss Drummond will be introducing a new style of maths homework from the maths hub, in the form of games! To introduce this to you we are going to be inviting you to a stay and play session to learn how to complete this homework at home. I have uploaded the details below and a form for you to fill in if you are able to make it, everything will be explained in more detail within this session.

MATHS MASTERY FOR PARENTS -We have become part of the Maths Mastery Parents Project with the Maths Hub. We are running fun maths workshops for parents in Reception Year 1 and Year 2. This project aims to enhance and further parental engagement in mathematics. We are inviting parents into school to learn games alongside their children - these games will then be taken home straight away and in the following weeks as part of each classes home learning. Please complete the booking form below and pop the date for your child in your diary:
