Year One Weekly Blog - 7th March

Magic moments

RE

Our class liturgy this week was a lovely session, two children chose some lovely items out of our box and formed discussions around them, these items were a heart and a star. We then sang my lighthouse together.

We discussed Jesus going to Jerusalem in our lesson, how people celebrated him and how some people weren’t very happy to see him. We began talking more about Lent, what this is and how we celebrate it.

We spent the morning of Ash Wednesday at Church and received our ashes. When returning to school we met with our partner class Year 5 to exchange Lenten boxes and this turned into an afternoon of playing together out in the sunshine, it was lovely for the children to be together.

English and Maths

In English this week we began doing some research to create fact files! We partnered up and used the ipads to find things out about two authors, Debi Gliori and Beatrix Potter. The children gathered all this information in teams to create a poster about each author. They worked excellently in pairs and showed some great determination and teamwork.

In Maths we have been looking at whole and part numbers. What are the two parts that make a whole? We used our stem sentences to help our fluency and knowledge of number.

What a fantastic day we had on Thursday! The children looked fantastic all dressed up and were so excited for the book swap in class. We joined together to show off our outfits and met up with Year 4 so they could read to us.

Science and Geography

We started our new topics in science and geography this week ready to dive even deeper in next weeks lessons! We are learning about everyday materials in science and hot and cold locations in geography.

Conversation starter : What do you know about hot and cold places? Do you need anything to live there?

Going Deeper…

My Happy Mind - We started our new topic this week, we looked at our relationships with the people around us and how we relate to each one, family, friends and teachers. We recapped our knowledge of character strengths and learnt that this is a way to relate and get along with somebody.

Conversation starter : What is your favourite character strength? How does it help you?
