‘The magic of Christmas is not in the presents, but in His presence.’

This week in Year One, the Christmas spirit has been all around us as we celebrated the start of Advent. The children are shining in their nativity rehearsals and the learning this week has been nothing short of wonderful! We ended our week in the most perfect way; raising money for Brian House in our silly socks. Thank you for all of you who have made a donation through Parent Pay.

What have we been learning this week?

In Maths the children have been practising their addition. They have learned that addition is commutative and that we can add in any order e.g. 3 + 1 = 4 and 1 + 3 = 4. They have also applied their knowledge of ‘equal to’ and know that addition can also be shown as ‘whole = part + part’ e.g. 4 = 3 + 1 and 4 = 1 + 3.

In English the children have innovated the story of Dangerous with their own ‘thing’. They have created their own story map, ready to begin writing their story next week.

In History, we have been learning about the royal family, specifically the significant events in Queen Elizabeth II’s life. The children re-enacted her coronation and retold it using historical terminology. I was AMAZED, by their independent writing and how enthusiastic they were to retell this significant event in Her Majesty’s life.

We had our fifth Kidsafe lesson this week. We learned all about managing our yukky feelings, if we hear our grown ups arguing. Please find this weeks Parent Letter attached for you to read.

Hip-Hip-Hooray!

Certificates

Enthusiastic Bobby Bee: For loving learning and always trying your hardest. Ava, even though you have been learning from home a little bit this week, you have not wasted any time in growing your brain. I was so impressed with the timetable you made to do learning from home and how determined you were when you returned to school. Your writing about Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation was spectacular! Well done Ava, you are a superstar!

Focused Cooper Crab: For pinching your Cooper Crab claws and focusing on your writing. Emilia, this week you have become a speedy writer. It’s been wonderful to see you writing in detail and also getting all of your brilliant ideas written down. Your writing about Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation was amazing! I cannot wait to read more of your speedy writing next week! Well done you!

Notices

  • Details of this weeks Home Learning can be found on the Home Learning Blog.

  • A plea for any clothes that your child has borrowed from school to be returned asap. We are running very low on spare clothes in the Year 1 classroom. Can I ask that if your child is prone to wet accidents, that they always have their own spare clothes in school as well as their own personal hygiene equipment (wipes, nappy bag etc). Thank you for your help with this.

  • After great discussion about how to restart our charity work the children have agreed that if every family donates £5 we will be able to raise a large sum to present to Brian House. To do this they have planned two themed Fridays, the first being today! The second on December 10th – a Christmas themed clothes day; a jumper, a t-shirt or simply Christmas colours. Mrs Hodges will organise ParentPay so that each family and members of staff can make a charitable donation.

God Bless and have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Lane and the Year 1 Team
