Year 1 Weekly Blog 10.5.24 'It is fitting that we should dedicate to Mary, the most beautiful month of the year, for she is the most beautiful of God’s creatures'

‘It is often said, that May is the most beautiful month of the year.

The flowers are in full bloom, the weather is mild and the first fruits of the soil are beginning to reward man’s labour.

It is fitting that we should dedicate to Mary, the most beautiful month of the year, for she is the most beautiful of God’s creatures.’

Antonio Cardinal Bacci

What a lovely sunny start to the week at school after our long weekend, I hope you enjoyed the extra day.

As usual we have been very busy, here is a little bit about what we have been up to.

We went to the ascension mass on Thursday, it was a lovely service. We enjoyed walking there with our year4 buddies.

As part of our collective worship we have looked at the four parts of the rosary which are known as ‘mysteries.’ We each had our own rosary beads. We practised moving the beads of the rosary to help keep track of our prayers. We completed one decade.

In RE we learnt about the Pentecost, Jesus made the apostles a promise before he went to heaven that he would always be with them, he said he would send the Holy Spirit. He told them to go to Jerusalem and wait. They prayed with Mary suddenly they felt the Holy Spirit, they felt brave and strong and could speak in many languages they didn’t know before.

Conversation Starter

Each week I will give you a question that I would like you to think about and discuss together at home. This could be over dinner time as a family, at bedtime, on a walk or even in the car. However you choose to discuss this question is up to you, but the idea is that it will help to give an insight in to what we talk about in school, help children to understand more about themselves or others.

Miss Bassett during collective worship talked about love and drew a heart on our board, each day we have added names of the children who have shown love and kindness to each other. My challenge was for every child to get their name within the heart, which we did.

Ask you child what did they do to get their name in the heart and how do you share love to each other at home?

What have we been learning this week……

In Maths we have been looking at 2D shapes, we played a game where we had to describe a shape for the children to guess. Can you do this at home ? Can they remember what the corners are called (vertices). We have continued with our addition and subitising up to 10. We are becoming very speedy with our Maths.

In Science we have been using our investigative skills to look at flowers and draw an observational picture of a tulip. We have labelled the parts of a plant. It was also lovely to share the work the optional homework challenge with the class. We have been outside in the sunshine and used chalks to draw and label plants. Year 1 are developing great skills, working both independently and as part of a group.

In English we have written our story about Peter Rabbit and the Radish Robber. We have started to mark our own work, looking for capital letters, finger spacing and correct punctuation. I have been very impressed with everyone’s independent writing and how they have been able to use their story mats and phonics mats to help them  remember their sentences

In DT we followed a design brief to make a healthy drink which used two fruits and a juice.  We used our research from last week to design and annotate our smoothies ready for next weeks practical work.

This week we were inspired by our science planting sunflower seeds, so we drew our own Vincent Van Gogh Sunflower inspired artwork using oil pastels.

Let’s Celebrate:

Well done to these children: a bronze, sliver and gold! I know there are lots that are very close, don’t forget to sign in their books. Upcoming dates and Reminders:

Ridgeway Farm

As part of our Geography and Science topic we will be visiting Ridgeway farm for our school trip on Tuesday 21st May. We really encourage parental engagement so it would be wonderful if we could have some adult helpers. If you are free and would love to join us please can you send me an email. Please note It will be a full day trip leaving school at 9:30am and returning by 3pm, you will need to bring a packed lunch and mobile phones can not be used around the children or to take photos of the children. There will be school iPads and photos will be uploaded to the blog.

The cost of the trip will be £15, this is on parent pay.

  • As the weather is getting warmer, please can you ensure your child is wearing suncream. Please can you bring in a named roller suncream into school so the children can apply it themselves while supervised at lunchtime.

  • Please can you bring in water bottles every day and remember to bring in reading folders so we can quiz and change books.

  • Please can you ensure football/pokemon cards do not come into school. There are lots being passed around and brought out in the classroom, they are best staying at home so they don’t go missing, thank you.

  • Polite reminder that all children across school should bring water in their bottles and not juice. This is something that we discuss regularly in school as part of our discussions about healthy snacks and healthy lunches. Please can you bring in healthy snacks please refer to the poster for suitable snack, we always have fruit avalible too.

  • Please can you bring/keep spare uniform in bags, as the weather has been wet recently, children have fallen over in puddles and it can sometimes be tricky finding spare uniform for them in the right size.
