Year 1 Weekly Blog 21.6.24 'Every child deserves a champion'

‘Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.’

Rita Pierson

This week started with our annual Gym Jam Jog event, it was lovely to see so many faces. I even ran a few laps with the children! Then we had our KS1 sports day, we completed like champions, we were inspired by Usian Bolt and we are so proud of them. These events have helped us to raise money for two very important causes, both of which are very close to our hearts and our community.

Thank you so much for your support

What have we been learning this week……

Today we walked to church for our RE lesson, which Father Peter led. We sat beautifully to learn about the features of the church and find out why they are important. Ask your child what can they remember? A huge thank you to Mrs Williams and Ms Voghon for joining us, your help and support gives the children so many opportunties to learn outside of school.

We had our sports day on Wednesday, thankfully the sun was shining for us all. We all tried our best and the children were super stars, listening to instructions, and taking part in the activities with big smiles on their faces. They cheered everyone on with great enthusiasm and helped each other out. We even managed to complete a hurdle relay race with no practices!  Well done everybody. Miss Liddell took some brilliant photo’s which I have made into a video, enjoy.

In English we have been thinking how we can lure the dinosaur back into the time machine. We have written some brilliant sentences about what happened in our classroom, ensuring that we used the joining word ‘and’ to link our sentences. We independently read and ordered a few sentence to help us orally retell what happened last week.

 Conversation Starter

Who would you like to like to come out of the time machine ? Would it be someone from the past or the future ?

Music with Miss Lavelle: This week we have been thinking about the Dynamics and Timbre of music.

Dynamics - The volume of music (loud or quiet)

Timbre - The 'colour' of music (the unique sound of each instrument or voice)

To inspire us we listened to ' The Aquarium' from 'Carnival of the Animals'  and thought about how the music represents the sparking colours of the fish through the use of an instrument called a Celeste. We then used a variety of instruments to practise changing the dynamics of the music to show the fish coming closer and further away.

In Maths we have revisited the days of the week and using the language before, now and after and creating our own stories with pictures.  I have been really impressed with our telling the time, we are learning where the minute hand needs to be for it to be o’clock.

Let’s Celebrate:

Lunchtime awards:

Well done to our Role Model Benji and Daisy for her Marvellous Manners.

Well done to our certificate awardees: a ‘Tommy Turtle’ and a ‘Sadie Spider’ for their determination and bravery during sports day.

This person is taking Henry home for being a brilliant teacher in class, you are sharing your knowledge with other children and helping them learn, you are a kind a patient friend.

Well done to these children: We had Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald! I know there are lots that are very close, don’t forget to sign in their books.

Wow another Gold reading trail certificate, this is a huge achievement, well done I am so proud of you.

Trips:

We have some exciting trips coming up this half term.We really encourage parental engagement so it would be wonderful if we could have some adult helpers. If you are free and would love to join us please can you send me an email.

Trip to the Farmers Market: Thursday 4th July leaving school at 9, will be back at around 10:30/11.

Trip to the Library: Thursday 11th July leaving school at around 1:45 back by hometime.

Upcoming dates and Reminders:

  • As the weather is so unpredictable. Please can you bring in a named roller suncream into school so the children can apply it themselves while supervised at lunchtime and a rain coat just incase it rains.

  • Please can you bring in water bottles every day and remember to bring in reading folders so we can quiz and change books.

  • Please can you ensure football/pokemon cards do not come into school. There are lots being passed around and brought out in the classroom, they are best staying at home so they don’t go missing, thank you.

  • Polite reminder that all children across school should bring water in their bottles and not juice. This is something that we discuss regularly in school as part of our discussions about healthy snacks and healthy lunches. Please can you bring in healthy snacks please refer to the poster for suitable snack, we always have fruit avalible too.
