School councilors- busy planting bulbs

Today the school councilors for each class came together for a meeting - we discussed affordable and fun ways of raising a little money for CAFOD this Christmas. Each pair of councilors will now return to class to collect ideas! After that, we all went outside to plant bulbs around our school sign. These flowers will bloom next spring but every year following!!! The school council in action making the school that little bit better and brighter!

Building castles..

Our meeting this month began with a beautiful prayer from Year 5, then we were all delighted to hear that the Year 6 councilors had met with our contractor to discuss the building of our new play castle!

After much careful consideration we have agreed on the final design, this will include scramble nets and climbing walls, amongst other wonderful things to alight our imagination.

We are planning, in the summer term, a return of the much loved Gym Jam Jog to help raise funds towards the costs. Councillors are going to finalise plans for this at our next meeting after the Easter break.

Silly Socks!

Our final meeting of the year began with a beautiful prayer which was written by the councillors in Year 5, then it was straight down to business. Our councillors were brimming with ideas for ways to raise money for our Christmas charity, Brian House, from silly socks to being a teacher for the day! Each class council had come up with so many ideas . This made it difficult for the Student Council to make decisions, but make decisions they did. Look out on your class blog for the big announcement.
It was also decided that Student Council this year are going to be designing and funding a new  item for the playground, we are thinking about trains or boats or racing cars - we are only limited by our imagination. Our final decision will be made in the new year., and hopefully by summer money can be raised, resources bought and the new development installed!

Meet the team.

What excitement this week, when, after what felt like a very long time, our new Class Councillors gathered together to take part in their first Student Council meeting. After introductions, we got straight down to business, everyone spoke so confidently and were brimming with great ideas. Miss Hornby, reminded everyone about the importance of working together as a team so that we can all make a difference to our school community. She was incredibly impressed with how articulately the children spoke about the school.

Councillors are going back to their classes now to discuss several different projects which we will share with you soon.

The children were asked what they were most proud of when they thought about our school, here are just some of the wonderful things they said:
“My friends helping me.”
“Everyone helps each other.”
“I am proud of my work.”

“I’m proud that my teachers are always there to support me”

“I like it when I can use bright colours.”
”I am proud when I can write for a long time, reading my finished piece of work makes me feel proud of the effort I have put in.”
"I am proud of all the kindness everywhere.”

and Abi Cassidy in Y5.

Welcoming our New Councillors

What excitement this week for our new class councillors when they had a surprise visit during their lessons from Miss Hornby and Mrs Webster (who were wearing masks) to present them with their smart councillor badges. Everyone looked proud and confident as they received the badges, together with a huge round of congratulatory applause from their classmates.
Despite these extraordinary times, councillors are putting their heads together with their classes and thinking of a project they can achieve within their classes, to help enrich our school family with generosity and gratefulness - there are so many possibilities.

Although our meetings may now have to take place remotely we have great hope for the year ahead.

Here are some of the things our councillors said they were looking forward to:

‘ I want to make the school an even happier place.’
‘ I am looking forward to helping my classmates.’
‘ I am looking forward to asking lots of questions.’
‘ I want to help guide people to make the right choices.’
‘ I hope to keep the school community full of friendship.’
‘I just want to look after everyone.’

We are all looking forward to working together.

Happy, curious and active new year!

What a wonderful start to our first meeting of the year when the councilors gave their approval on the drafts for the new trim trail equipment. Year six, along with Miss Hornby are going to meet with the contractor in the next few weeks and hopefully work will begin in time for everyone to enjoy an active spring.
Everyone brought such positivity to the meeting with suggestions for new games for whole classes to play together at break times, we are excited and curious to discover what other classes enjoy playing together, and we can’t wait to them try them out with our own class.
Councillors are now thinking big and are exploring options to replace the old train and ship, we already have lots of exciting ideas for fund raising, so who knows, a rocket, a helicopter or even a Noah’s ark!

The smallest of ideas can change the school...

Today we had our final Student Council Meeting of the year and said goodbye to our council. Each child shared how they have found their experience of leadership and there were some lovely reflections, including the quote above by Jasmine. It has been a successful year as the council have seen their Children’s Choice Wednesday implemented, an initiative which has resulted in increasing lunchtime numbers across the week. Children have enjoyed having ownership of food choices. They want to continue with this initiative in the new academic year and already we have a large selection of suggestions with waffles being the current firm favourite, especially for Ryan who would like a little chocolate sauce with his!

Thank you children for being such a pro-active group of children who have problem-solved throughout the year to help Our Lady’s run smoothly!
