Good morning Year 1! Can you believe we are now in our FINAL half-term of the year? It feels like only yesterday we began our year 1 learning journey together. Let’s make this half-term the best yet and see how much we can grow our brains! I hope you all had a wonderful break and enjoyed the lovely sunshine. I have spent lots of time in my garden and have loved doing lots of planting myself.
I will continue to set daily and weekly challenges for the children to do at home. I understand how everyone’s situation is different and that as parents are gradually returning to work, doing all of the home learning may be a challenge. I would appreciate it if you could prioritise daily learning over weekly challenges. That being said, please just do what you can, that is more than enough. The quality of the children’s learning from home so far, has been wonderful and I am so grateful.
What are we learning today?
Phonics
Today I would like you to do the lesson Read Longer Words, by following the link to the YouTube channel above.
Use the links below to continue practising your speedy words and for those who are whizzing through them, can you spell them? Go on, have a go!
Reading
Remember to read everyday, just like we do at school. I would love you to read for at least 20 minutes each day, be that a physical book or an ebook on Epic/Accelerated Reader. If your book has an option to quiz on AR or Epic, please remember to do so.
English
This week our focus story it The Jolly Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. We will be meeting The Jolly Postman, finding out who he delivers the post to and finally, writing our own letters and postcards to post to a friend or relative.
Talk to your child about the postman/lady being someone who helps us. Ask: Do you know what job they do? Can you spot them coming down the street? What do they wear? What happens when they come to your door? What do they bring? How do they travel?
Watch the Postman Rhymes song, via the button. Pause frequently to discuss some of the vocabulary, such as profession, roam, plight, inform, etc.
Draw a picture of a postman/lady and write down some of the things they bring/do/ wear, e.g. My postman wears a red uniform. He carries a big bag full of letters and bills. They have to read the address to check the mail gets to the right person. Encourage the use of independent phonics for spelling.
Check for capital letters and full stops. Can your child include a sentence that uses ‘and’ and a sentence that uses ‘but’?
Maths
We are going to round up our learning about money today and this lesson is all about recognising notes. Apologies for near the end of the video where the filming ends abruptly. I am still learning how to use the filming software.
Missing you all lots!
