Art News… Week Three.
And just like that we have completed three weeks of school. We are so settled in our new ‘normal’ that it is now just our normal routine. The children are fabulous ‘bug busters’ with great hygiene routines and are remembering to treat everyone with an extra bit of kindness.
In Art…
Year one had lots of fun creating their own art after listening to The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. A story about a little girl who believed she couldn’t draw, of course she could and just needed the encouragement to try. We placed our pencil on the paper and saw where it took us. Some were a little nervous at the start but as they saw their art grow, so did their confidence just like Vashti in the story.
Year two wore me out yesterday as we responded to music. We listened and danced (it was the dancing that wore me out!) to six different genres of music, Pop, Classical, Jazz, Grime/Rap, Rock and Country. We then thought about how it made us feel, what colour would that feeling be and what could it look like if it was a drawing. Year two seem to be avid Rock fans with a great air guitar action.
Year three explored the art of shading. We learned about tone, if we apply different pressures on the pencil we get different tones. We learned about the techniques, Hatching, cross hatching, scribbling and stippling. After trying these, I challenged the children to complete a sheet where they could put their new knowledge into action.
Year four had a session on observational drawing. This is a real tricky skill to master and here at Our Lady’s, we like to master it, each year group have regular observational drawing sessions and we see our skill improve each session. Year four had fruits and vegetables to draw, looking at what they actually see, not what they think they saw. Detail and shading make these drawing look realistic, Great job year four.
Year five took on their Hundertwasser challenge to take last weeks sketches and create their own inspired version. We drew the outline and started to fill the sections in bold and bright oil pastels. These will be carried on next week and hopefully we will start on our acetate layer.
Year six cut out their pop art portraits from last week and glued them onto contrasting backgrounds, these look great and are now displayed in the Create room. Our lesson today was to carry on with our tone work, this time in pencil. We practiced our light, mid and dark tones before taking on observational drawing of fruits and vegetables. Looking where the light hit the surface and where shadow fell.
Some children have said they’d like to bring me pictures, due to the current situation, it would be better if a photo could be sent via email instead, I will of course answer. My email is r.curtis@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk thank you.
Have a great weekend, stay safe.
God bless
Mrs Curtis
