To keep our learning ticking over, below are some challenges to consolidate prior learning. These challenges are not compulsory (apart from reading); I completely understand if your child needs a brain break over half term. Equally, I know how determined the little learners are in Year 1 and how much they love to grow their brains. Why not treat the challenges like a Pick n’ Mix and have a go at one or two?
Reading
Children should continue to read every day to keep practising and applying their phonic skills. Two weeks is a big break from phonics lessons, so let’s keep the love of reading growing! Further guidance on reading, can be found on the How to Help Your Child page.
English
Following on from your reading, have a go at writing a couple of sentences about a chosen character. How would you describe their personality and appearance? Don’t forget capital letters and punctuation!
Maths
Two-Dimensional Shapes
W.7Count sides and corners
W.8Compare sides and corners
Three-Dimensional Shapes
X.8Select three-dimensional shapes
X.9Identify shapes traced from solids
Don’t forget to visit the How To Help Your Child page, for further Math’s challenges.
Computing
2Type
There are lots of different challenges using 2Type, on Purple Mash. The children love challenging themselves to type as fast as possible and beat the clock. I recommend practising High Frequency Words.
Handwriting
The children have been practising their cursive handwriting in class and have been using the booklets below. There is no need to print these booklets, you can use them as a guide of what letters to focus on. If your child does any writing over the half-term break, can they do any letters in cursive?
Food Technology
Mrs Curtis has challenged the children to make fruit cars! YUM! All the information can be found on a piece of paper in your children’s reading packet.
Passwords for Purple Mash and IXL, can be found in the back of your child’s Reading Log.
