"Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again." Nelson Mandela

The beginning of our week saw us writing to the Government. We are trying to be ACTIVE when thinking about our faith. We have explored the issue of sharing the vaccine with poorer nations. The letters aim to persuade our Government to improve this situation. I talked to the children too about those people who choose not to have the vaccine and I explained that this would be someone’s individual choice and their absolute right (bodily autonomy). I emphasized that the sharing of the vaccine was about giving everyone that choice especially those people in poorer countries who are clinically vulnerable. I’m just marking the letters currently and then the children are bringing them home to type. Good job everyone!

The maths lessons this week have been corkers!!! So much reasoning about factors multiples, prime numbers, composite numbers and square numbers. Now that we have a deeper understanding of what they are we can logically think through puzzles- Great work all! Our “Day and Night” display is now complete in class- as the children typed and selected images for their explanatory text. In music the children created their own planet and are now ready to compose music for it. The theme of Sc-Fi remains in English too. We visited Pandora (Avatar) using this to inspire our “extended noun phrases” - not as easy as it sounds. Once again Mrs Curtis delivered a calm and immersive art lesson and the formal swimming lessons came to an end as we move onto survival skills next week (see reminders below).

Finally, Madame Jefferson led a fun French lesson during which the children made up sentences all about the planets in the Solar System see picture below.

Time to Celebrate

This week it was sooo difficult to choose should receive the certificate. There were so many wonderful contributions to the learning - thank you everyone.

The Grow Your Brain Awards went to: Kiefer (again!) and Julia

The compassionate certificate went to the whole class. Even through we have moments when individuals make the wrong choices, the class family are being so much more understanding. Children are taking responsibility for their actions. Alongside this are the words of encouragement; the acts of kindness; the spontaneous applause when someone gets something right in class after a great deal of effort. It is lovely to see the class maturing in this way. We are never ever the finished product but we are working, constantly, on being the best versions of ourselves.

Stephanie has had a poem published in a Young Writers collaboration called “This is me” . With her permission I’ve popped her poem on our blog to celebrate:

Dancing shoes on my feet

Listening to that music beat

Cute, fluffy, ginger cats

I love girly bucket hats

Animated Disney movies

Banana, strawberry and orange smoothies

Spiders and the dark make me want to flee

These are all the things together that make me

Important reminders

The growing up talk for the girls will be taking place next Wednesday afternoon (please see last weeks blog for the letter and further details).

SWIMMING - NEXT WEEK WE NEED TO BRING OUR NORMAL SWIM KIT BUT IN ADDITION SIMPLE PYJAMAS - LONG LEGGED AND LONG ARMED. THESE COULD BE COTTON LEGGING AND A LONG SLEEVED T-SHIRT. THE LENGTH IS IMPORTANT AS WE USE THEM TO RESCUE OTHERS. PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THE SWIMWEAR TO WEAR UNDER THE PYJAMAS. Thank you

TRIP the class will be joining the St. Annes conservation team once more down on the beach. The team annually cut up discarded Christmas trees and weave them together to create barriers to trap sand - preserving and cultivating new dunes. We will be going on the last day of this half term Friday 11th World Habitat day. I have conformation but the incorrect date has been given on an email so Mrs Mather (our leader in all things eco) is chasing this up- I’ll update you next week.

Have a lovely restful weekend - for the whole Year 5 team
