At the start of our year, we all agreed that the school hall needed a splash of colour. We looked at abstract paintings and focused on the artist Kandinsky, we did some research and loved looking at his abstract pieces, especially those with concentric circles.
We experimented by creating a huge piece of abstract art! We tried charcoal, chalk, oil pastels, pens, different types of pencils and looked at how a pencil’s number on the graphite scale and thickness of the lead influence the softness or hardness of the line. We discussed how these types of media were so different and why did we think that was? We displayed our creation in our classroom and called it “Entering the city”, we all had so much fun doing this and celebrating our work. We then cut our art piece into small sections and everyone in school got to take one home, the children were so excited and amazed about this.
As we entered our Harvest season we decided to do a pumpkin competition, with each class focused on an artist. As we found out more about this artist and their preferred techniques, we used their influences to create works based on pumpkins; the only rule was : use your creativity!
From each class we chose 4 pieces of work (such a difficult decision) and our Office judges then had to vote for the winners, oh my it was such a hard task, all the selected works were amazing! Enter your child's year group to find some of the pictures for this term.
Have a lovely half term.
