Year One Weekly Blog - 25th April

Magic moments

RE

What a week it has been. It has been a sad week for the Catholic community due to the news of Pope Francis’ passing, as a class we spent time discussing Pope Francis and his impact on the world. The children made some prayer cards for him to send in a book to Rome to be with him.

We also spent some time with the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. The children made some lovely art work and some will be displayed in the craft book that is travelling rounds schools with the statue.

English and Maths

We began our new topic this week - time travel! The children came into the classroom to find a time machine, some clues and some destruction in our classroom! We made some predictions about what might have happened and who might have been here. We then read our book 123 do the dinosaur. The children acted this out and then began using suffixes to change the ending of our words.

We have been recapping our skills on partition this week ready to move onto addition from next week.

Science and History

We began our new History topic this week - The Great Fire of London! We have transitioned our role play area into a Fire Station so the children are able to act out parts of the story, however we are quite low on resources for this. If you have any costumes or items that you wouldn’t mind donating or lending please could you send these in next week? Thank you.

Next week we will begin our topic plants and tree’s, we started this at the beginning of the year and we are now going back to see what we remember and to dig a little bit deeper. On Monday we are going to begin growing some cress in our classroom. If you eat any eggs this weekend or have any egg boxes that you don’t need, please send them in! I will attach a picture below so you know what they will look like.

Going deeper…

In my happy mind we have started our final topic: engage. It is now time to put all our learning into practise. We have learnt how to make ourselves feel good, so now we can do good.

Conversation starter: Is there anyone you feel grateful for today? Why? How can you show them?

Lets celebrate!

Finally, it has been a BIG week for celebrating birthday’s this week!
