We are nearing the end of our Spring term and what a successful term it continues to be!
We have had parent meetings over the last two weeks which have been a wonderful opportunity to share these successes with you at home. I have really enjoyed this chance to speak with you all and to share our learning so far - thank you for your time. We are all so proud of how much the children have achieved already and are excited for the many more successes to come!
What have we been learning this week…
RE: This week in RE we continued our Lenten journey by reflecting on the important job that God had asked Jesus to do and the sacrifice he was about to make for all of us. We have thought about the significance of Holy Week, which year 2 introduced on Friday with their Palm Sunday assembly.
Literacy: This week we have been focusing on our name writing and letter formation skills. It is such a magical time of year in Reception when all of our phonics skills are demonstrated in our writing and one of our big focuses is making sure that we form each letter correctly. We are taking time to think about where the letter starts, which way round it goes and making sure not to take our pencil off until the end of the letter. We’ve also been putting this into practise this week by writing labels for our butterfly life cycle.
Maths: This week in Maths we have been comparing numbers. We began by ordering numbers 1 - 8 using our staircase method from last week. Then, when some of the numbers were mixed around, we had to be detectives and work out which numbers were in the wrong place. We used our understanding of number to explain why by using the sentence ‘____ is more than ____’. E.g. 6 is in the wrong place because 6 is more than 5 so it needs to come after five’ etc.
Understanding the world: This half term we have continued to investigate how different things change. We are continuing to look at our baby pictures to see how we have changed but this week, we took a closer look at ‘life-cycles’ and in particular the life cycle of a butterfly. This linked really nicely to our very hungry caterpillar story and we were already familiar with the stages and vocabulary. We have begun to make a large lifecycle to display in our classroom, complete with our own labels of course!
Let’s Celebrate…
This weeks learning character and virtue awards goes to:
Enthusiastic Learner: Rose!
Rose, it’s wonderful to see how much you are enjoying your reading journey. Each day you grow in confidence and enthusiasm and we see the excitement and pride you have in yourself when you realise just how much you are achieving! Being enthusiastic about learning is such a wonderful quality to have and this will help you continue to fly on your learning journey.
Well done Rose!
Creative Learner: Jaxon!
Jaxon, it’s been lovely to see how much you are enjoying our topic ‘change’ and in particular learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. You have remembered lot’s of our key vocabulary which you have been able to use when describing the life cycle which is fantastic! You even took your learning further by setting yourself your own challenge or replicating the different stages of the life cycle using different resources and materials from around our classroom. Your caterpillar was very creative! You have shown what a Kiki Creative Chameleon you can be.
Well done Jaxon!
Whole School Virtues - Loving and Compassionate: Kyler!
Kyler, it’s lovely to see how much you care for the adults and children in our class and we can see that through the love and compassion you show us all. Thank you for bringing such a warm, caring heart and smile into our classroom.
Well done Kyler!
