Day 5

Read together the opening extract from Horrid Henry Peeks at Peter’s Diary from Horrid Henry and the Football Fiend by clicking the front cover opposite.

Discuss why people choose to write a diary – i) to retell key events that have happened to them that day and ii) to make comments on these events or talk about their thoughts and feelings.

Re-read Perfect Peter’s diary entries on pp10-11 of the extract. Ask whether these are good diary entries or not. How could they be improved?

Imagine you are Perfect Peter. Your challenge is to rewrite the diary entry for one of the days. You could imagine that you are writing the entry after one of Henry’s troublesome antics that you’ve read about this week. Remember to i) retell the key events from the day and ii) make some comments, or write about your thoughts or feelings in response to what happened.

Check all sentences for spelling and punctuation together.

Day 4

Read together the opening extract from Horrid Henry Robs the Bank from the Tricky Tricks Collection by clicking the front cover opposite.

Discuss the game Gotcha that Horrid Henry and Moody Margaret are playing. Does Gotcha remind you of any board games you like to play? What are the similarities or differences? It sounds like Henry likes to cheat! Do any of your family members cheat when playing board games?!

Whilst we have been in lockdown and socially distancing, you may have been playing some board games with your family. Use the opportunity to dig out some old favourites and play again! Talk about your favourites and why. Do you have a board game that you think Henry would like to play?

Your challenge is to introduce Henry to a board game and write a review. You would need to include:
name of the game
number of players
a basic summary of how to play
why the game is one of your favourites and why you think Henry would like it
a star rating.

Day 3

horrid henry birthday party.jpg

Return to the theme of Henry’s birthday party from yesterday. Talk about how a birthday party takes a lot of preparation and planning! Today, you are going to help Henry’s family with the planning and make some lists. Re-watch the animated version here, up to 3:36 mins:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL8g_KNzHVs

Imagine you are Henry’s Mum. Write a list of all the party food Mum would like to buy. Continue to add more items than those mentioned in the clip. Now imagine that you are Henry. Write a list of all the party food that Henry would like to buy. Add some more items to this list too!

Remember to use commas to separate all the items on your list!

Later on, (5:10 mins) Dad says, ‘I know lots of good games.’

Make a list of all the party games that could be played at Henry’s party. Talk about how Henry might spoil each one.

Watch to the end of the story. Imagine you are either Henry or Henry’s Mum. Write some sentences listing all the reasons why you think Henry should or shouldn’t have a birthday party next year. Check all sentences for spelling and punctuation together.

This week’s focus text is one of our favourites - Horrid Henry by Francesca Simon! I can’t wait to find out what Henry gets up to, can you?

Day 1
Read together the opening chapter of one of the first stories about Horrid Henry by clicking the front cover opposite.

Discuss – How is Henry feeling about the dance class? Why doesn’t he want to go? What would he rather be doing? What do you think about Madame Tutu? What does Madame Tutu think of Henry’s dancing?

Support by watching the opening of the animated version of the same story up to 3:08 mins:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5aTgH1vCE0

Pretend you are Henry and write in role. Write a letter to Mum and Dad, pleading with them to stop taking you to the dance classes. Discuss all the reasons you could include in the letter, e.g. you’d rather learn karate, Madame Tutu screeches at you, your friends at school will laugh when they see you as a raindrop, etc.

Use your discussion to help write your letter. You might want to use the introductory sentence and sentence starters below to help you:

Dear Mum and Dad, I’m writing this letter to convince you that dance classes are not for me!
First of all, …
Another reason …
Also, …
Finally, …
Please say you’ll think about it! Love Henry

Day 4 - Cheesecake
Complete your recipe from yesterday or move on to another recipe challenge! Watch and enjoy the short clip below.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/makes/cheesecake-make?collection=easy-cooking-with-kids-recipes

Unlike the clip viewed yesterday, this one is accompanied by a list of ingredients (‘You will need’), but has no recipe text to match. Your challenge is to write the matching recipe!

Similar to yesterday, re-watch the clip, pausing at frequent intervals to write a sentence or two to match each stage of the recipe. Listen out for key words, phrases and bossy verbs to include in your own sentences, e.g. put, crush, mix, press down hard. Towards the end of the clip, there are two sentences starting with when. Can you hear them? Support your child by encouraging them to rehearse their sentences out loud first, before writing them down. Re-read each sentence as you write. Check spelling and punctuation together. Don’t forget to use numbers and time words to help order the steps in your recipe!

Day 3 - Tortilla Pizza
Watch and enjoy the short clip below.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/makes/tortilla-pizza?collection=easy-cooking-with-kids-recipes

Explain to your child that their task today is to write a recipe to match the film clip. Watch for a second time, this time pausing at frequent intervals to make a list of all the ingredients you need. Perhaps you could draw a box around these and give the box a title.

Watch the clip for a third time, this time pausing after each stage in order to create a written instruction to match. Listen out for key words and bossy verbs used by the presenter to use in your own sentences, e.g. add, squeeze, zig-zag, sprinkle. Support your child by encouraging them to rehearse their sentences out loud first, before writing them down. Re-read each sentence as you write. Check spelling and punctuation together. Don’t forget to use numbers and time words to help order the steps in your recipe!

Once complete, have a look at the ‘real’ recipe to match the clip here;

Day 2 - The Gruffalo - Mouse Toast
Read the recipe for Mouse Toast below:

mouse toast.JPG

Read the text together – this could be by reading the text to your child, your child reading to you, or encouraging your child to join in with known words. Talk about how this author has made it easy to follow the recipe, e.g. a ‘you will need’ box, numbered steps, a tips box etc.

If possible, print off the text. Highlight /pick out bossy verbs, e.g. lift, press, dip, cut, make, break. Explain that recipes use bossy verbs because they are instructions; they are instructing someone to do something.

Highlight in a different colour any helpful hints or tips, e.g. Be quick with your decorations so you can eat him before he gets cold; Whilst you’re waiting…

If you have the opportunity, have a go at making some ‘mouse toast’ together! (Children MUST be supervised by an adult). Don’t worry if you don’t have all the ingredients – you can improvise and adapt, providing you have an egg and a slice of bread!

This week’s English focus theme is ‘non-fiction: Recipes’. Some of the lessons this week provide the opportunity to follow a recipe and make some delicious food! These activities are optional and can be changed to suit what you have in you cupboards if you wish. Each of these tasks MUST be supervised by an adult. When following links online, parents should monitor that children are remaining on that page only and are keeping safe online.

Day 1
Read together some of the healthy recipes on the website below. There are plenty to choose from, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even barbecue and picnic recipes!
https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/recipes

After you have read a few examples together, ask your child: How has the author tried to make it easy to follow each recipe? e.g. sub-headings, an ingredients section, use of numbers to sequence the steps, ingredients in green print to stand out, etc.

If you have the opportunity, select one of the recipes and have a go at making your chosen food. Alternatively, make some food following one of your own favourite recipes. (Children MUST be supervised by an adult).

Afterwards, evaluate the recipe together. Were the steps easy to follow? Could the recipe be improved in anyway? Don’t forget to enjoy and evaluate your food too!

Enjoy watching together. Can you identify each of the characters? Can you pause and predict what is going to happen next? Discuss how the film makers have combined the different tales. Would you recommend the film to a friend and why?

Day 4 - Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Use the link below to listen to and enjoy Goldilocks and the Three Bears from Revolting Rhymes up to 3:59 mins.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxHn2v3dz5E

Jot down new or interesting words to explore meanings and discuss, e.g. delinquent, tot, suggestion, distressing, house-proud, cherubs etc. Model orally putting new words into different sentences and encourage your child to do the same. Listen from the start to 3:59 mins again. The narrator repeatedly asks, in response to Goldilocks’ actions, how would you feel? Pause each time this is asked and discuss.
The narrator also makes clear her dislike for Goldilocks all the way through the poem. Discuss how the narrator might describe Goldilocks, e.g. Naughty, spoilt, selfish. Do you agree? Re-watch from 3:36 – 3:59 mins. Pause and make a list of all Goldilocks’ crimes.
Imagine that you are Goldilocks. Write a letter to the narrator, apologising for your crimes, perhaps providing some explanation as to why you did what you did. Just like on Tuesday, remember to lay out your letter with your address, the date, to and from. Check spelling and punctuation in each sentence together.

Finish watching to the end of the clip. Do you think if the narrator had received your letter, the ending could have been different?

Day 3 - The Tummy Beast
Use the link below to listen to and enjoy The Tummy Beast from Dirty Beasts by Roald Dahl.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tinzhrgFILE

Watch the clip again, this time while following the text, accessible here:
https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/51659/the-tummy-beast

If you are able to, print off the text from the link above. Highlight the lines spoken by the mother in one colour, and those spoken by the child in another.

Use this highlighting to help you read the text aloud together. Put on your best character voices to perform! Perhaps you could take on different roles in your family!

Discuss what is happening in the poem. Why do you think the mother doesn’t believe the child? How is the child feeling when the mother doesn’t believe them? What happened to the mother at the end? What do you think the mother might say when she recovers?

Write a diary entry as if you were the child or the mother, recounting the key events of the day. You could even pinch some key words and phrases used in the poem!

Day 2 - Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf
The link below takes you to a printed version of the text, together with an audio recording by the author, Roald Dahl. For the learning today, you will need to pause the recording at various points to make predictions.
https://childrens.poetryarchive.org/poem/little-red-riding-hood-and-the-wolf/

Introduce the poem and explain that you are going to listen to it in parts. Start listening and then pause the recording at 1:02 mins. Make predictions. What do you think might happen next? What happened next in the original tale?

Resume the poem. Pause again at 1:40. Recap what has just happened. Ask, what does the wolf want to do next? Discuss the need to warn Little Red Riding Hood! Write Little Red Riding Hood a letter to warn her of the Wolf’s intentions and the need to stay away from Grandma’s house! Perhaps you could write as if you were a woodland animal – a friend of Little Red Riding Hood.

Remember to lay out your letter with your address, the date, to and from. Try to convince Little Red Riding Hood as much as you can to stay away! Check spelling and punctuation in each sentence together.

Finish the session by resuming the reading of the poem. How is it different to the original tale? Are there any parts that surprise you? Which version do you prefer and why?

English

Roald Dahl may already be one of your favourite authors, but did you know he was very skilled at writing poetry too? The extracts used this week are from Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts, both of which are told completely in rhyme. Dahl did, however, also use poetry within some of his stories, e.g. when the Oompa Loompas sing about each of the children in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the window cleaners in The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me.

Day 1 - The Porcupine
Use the link below to listen to and enjoy ‘The Porcupine’ from Dirty Beasts by Roald Dahl.
https://soundcloud.com/penguin-audio/revolting-rhymes-dirty-beasts

Watch this short clip to find out more about porcupines.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSadv0qmZ6s

Discuss what it must have felt like for the child in the poem! Listen to the poem again, stopping to write down favourite words and phrases. You may choose to print off a copy of the poem here:
https://100.best-poems.net/porcupine.html

Read together and highlight the key words and phrases.

Design and create a poster warning children about the danger of porcupines! Include some warning sentences starting with ‘if’, e.g. If you don’t look carefully, you could sit on one by mistake! If you sit on a porcupine, its spikes will stick in you!
Pinch some of your favourite words or phrases from the poem, e.g. It will feel as if a hundred red hot bits of wire are puncturing your skin! Be sure you look before you sit! You may also choose to use some key facts from the information clip, e.g. The spikes are called quills and can come out very easily. Ouch!
Include a diagram in your poster, labelling the key parts, particularly those dangerous quills! Check your punctuation and spelling.

Today I have set you a ‘grammar skills’ task.

Oxford Owl Spelling

Oxford Owl have allowed access to some superb spelling resources linked to the spelling scheme we follow in school. It would be brilliant for your child to access a different spelling rule a day. However, I will be unable to set certain spelling rules for each day as many of the tasks have the same name and I am unable to set links to specific rules. Therefore, It would be great to access the website everyday and choose one spelling focus for that day. You should then know which ones you have completed and which ones need doing. The tasks are only short and shouldn’t take too long. To access the resources:

Go to www.oxfordowl.co.uk

Click ‘My Class Login’ at the top of the page and enter the username and password:
Username: ourladyyear2
Password: year2

From there, click on the ‘Read Write Inc. Spelling’ tab. (There are MORE reading books on this resource too, many that should have quizzes on Accelerated Reader! … So many opportunities to read!!)

If you then select Year 2 in the ‘Year Groups’ drop down menu, the spelling rules for Year 2 will appear. There you can choose which rule to work through each day.

If you have any issues, please do not hesitate to ask.

Maths

Maths is a little different this week because we are one week ahead on the resources due to having only one week off at Easter.
Therefore, I thought it would be good to give the children a choice of two skills to revisit. The first link will be to revisit a place value skill. The second link is to revisit a money skill. Your child can choose which area they feel they need more practice in, or can watch both videos if they wish.
