Just 10 spellings this week. The focus for this week has been words ending in -tious that sounds like ‘shus’. Spelling number 6 is a tricky one as it is a xious ending instead but it has the same sound.

Maths

Our times tables knowledge has been a great help for us in our short division lessons. We are getting speedier with these which is giving us more time to tackle the division problem. Games like TTRS and Hit the Button are brilliant for speedy times tables. Have a go at ‘Hit the Button’ and see if you can get over 20 (or even 30!). Tell me your highest score.


Reading

AR has been down this week due to a county update regarding the IP. AR should be up and running by Monday in which we should see plenty of children ready to quiz.


World Book Day- Thursday 7th March

World Book Day is soon upon us so make sure you have your costumes ready for the big day. We are all going to create our own story, simply from our imagination. You will need to bring in a ‘magical object’- This may include a magic feather, a magic stone, a magic jewel- get creative.

Maths

We have just begun our big division topic which is closely related to our times tables. Regular times tables practice will be needed to help your child access the content. There are lots of fun times tables games to play online such as Hit the Button, Maths Bingo and TTRS.


Kindness Homework

As we have now swapped our Lenten boxes with our Year 2 partners, the children will now need to fill these boxes with money earned from acts of kindness. The children are to write a list of the acts of kindness they intend to carry out in order to raise money. This may also include doing some extra chores around the house to help you parents!

Year 5 Half Term Homework

Reading

We are currently at just over 4 million words as a class on our word count for the year. At Christmas, we set a target of 10 million words before the end of school in summer. We are currently halfway through the year so the more everyone reads- the closer we will get to the target!


Spelling

Maths

We will be beginning our big multiplication and division topic after half term so it is vital that the children keep practicing their times tables over the week and they feel confident with all tables up to x12.


Science

For anyone who has not finished their planets fan project- this will need to be competed over half term. The research side has all been done and it is onto the colouring and making of the fans.

They will need to make a small hole through the circle, which is at the bottom of each sheet. Then you will need to place a split pin through each sheet (one by one) to create the fan.

When you have finished, take a picture of your child with their fan project so that the photo can go in their book for evidence.


Lenten Boxes

Easter will soon be approaching us after half term so the children will need to make a lenten box in order to swap with another child. The children could use butter tubs, plastic container, small cardboard box- it’s up to you! (Just make sure it is fully cleaned first)

All children have been given a post it note which should be inside their reading book. This is a target that they have set for themselves in the time to complete the book. Big house points up for grabs for each target complete.

This week we have looked at homophones again but have focused on ‘near-homophones’ which are words with the same sound and very similar spelling. The first 8 spellings focus on this theme. I have attached some of the techniques that we used to help differentiate these words. It would be great if the children could practise writing these words in sentences. The next four spellings are other homophones that we have covered this year.

Christmas Concert Practice- PRIORITY

We have now finished all of our concert practice sessions and with our concert being on Monday, it s crucial that children spend the weekend going over any of the songs that they do not know as well. All of the songs and lyrics are on last weeks blog.

The song in particular that needs the most practice is ‘While Shepherds Watched’. This is because each class sings a different verse so it is more independent of each child to loudly and confidently sing the lyrics. We are singing Verse 2 which is;

Christmas Concert Practice

The next 3 songs of our Christmas concert have been practiced this week. Next week, we will begin practicing at church so it is vital that children are learning the lyrics at home so they are prepared.


The Great Our Lady Bake Off & Christmas Jumpers- Friday 8th December

We are one week away from the Our Lady Christmas Bake Off. Both children and staff will be entering separate competitions and everyone will take part in judging all of our entries. This is all in aid to raise money for Brian House- to give children less fortunate than ourselves a wonderful Christmas.

9:00 - 9:30am - Judging! 

This will take place in the classroom for individual bakes and in the hall for the family bakes. The bakes will be judged on 2 things: flavour and festive appearance. Teaching team are judging the taste and the children are judging the appearance -one winner per class. For those children who are doing a family bake, these will come into the hall and Mrs Gregan and Mrs Nel will judge these. Make it special. Have a gingham altar at the front of your class and make it a real event. 

Breaktimes - Cake Sale

We will then separate the bakes and have some for the class bake sale and keep some for the parents in the afternoon. The children will be bringing in £1 for the cake sale. See how much is brought in and then decide how much the children can buy.

Science- Gravity

In our forces topic, we have been looking at gravity and have experimented with measuring the force of gravity (weight). In the experiment, we were measuring the mass of objects (using a weighing scale) and also the force of gravity of the object (using a forcemeter).

Their 2 tasks for this week are;

1) Find 10 fun facts about gravity- design this into a poster or fact file in your homework books.

2) Measure the mass of 5 objects in your house using a weighing scale. Then using our conversion rate, calculate the force of gravity for that object.

100g (mass) = 1N(force of gravity)

1kg = 1000g


Maths

In our maths lessons, we will be doing 10/15 minutes of multiplication fluency at the start of every lesson to make sure that our times tables are mastered before starting our big multiplication topic after Christmas. This will be on IXL;

Everyone has been given their script and the whole class have had a rundown of what the assembly is out. The key at the top of the script page will indicate what colour tie you are to wear. Please can you bring your coloured tie in when back in school. Tips for helping to practice for assemblies;

  • Make a note of who you’re speaking after and the last word of their line.

  • Focus on expression and how you want to say your lines.
