This year, I have spoken a lot about the strength of a community - our school family. A group of people who care deeply about one another; treating each other with love and compassion. The Our Ladys’ family has always been a special one; one that never gets any smaller, but instead grows each year when a group of Reception children arrive; we also welcome new members over the course of the year.
When our children leave school and head off to their new high schools, they are always remain a member of our family. We take such great delight in meeting them out and about, hearing about their new adventures and the challenges that they face. Often many of them pop in and see us in school, excited to share news or to simply ask how we are.
On Friday, I shared with you all the heart-breaking news about an accident that involved two of our past pupils; Harrison and James Bretherton. On Wednesday evening last week, a number of events took place that have changed the lives of a family forever. Throughout last week, we became more aware of the seriousness of the crash and the implications that it had on Harrison in particular. In the end, the injuries that he sustained were just too much. We are beyond devastated to have heard the news that Harrison passed away on Friday afternoon, surrounded by his family. Many of us taught the boys and have such wonderful memories of the characters that they were; we are mourning Harrison’s loss deeply here in school. I met the boys only recently and was incredibly proud of the young men that they had grown into. The pain that we are feeling as a school community is not comparable to what his parents and siblings will be feeling. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are of course shared with them all and wider family and friends.
In the coming days, I will be thinking about how we can come together as a school community to support the family, but to also support each other and navigate this incredibly sad period of our lives. Tomorrow I am meeting Father Peter who will guide us spiritually and help us come together to pray for Harrison and his family. The Worship Area in school has been made into a silent area of reflection for staff to use this week, and for any members of our community who would like a space for their thoughts. You are all more than welcome to come and spend some quiet moments in school if you so need; for whatever reason you require.
I prayed that I would not have to write this post for our newsletter; it is the most difficult task that I have ever had to do. The start of the school year has been challenging in so many ways; much more challenging than we have ever faced before, but because we have such strong faith and relationships, I know that we are stronger together.
Please keep the Bretherton family in your thoughts and prayers, and all who knew and loved Harrison. I pray that God hold’s them in the palm of his hand, letting them know how much they are loved and supported.
Eternal Rest, grant unto him O Lord
And let perpetual light shine upon him
May he rest in peace.
Amen
