Dear Parents,
As always, we seek to support more learning opportunities beyond school. We have posted below a series of tasks to have a go at over the holiday to keep our brains and key skills ticking over. This is non-compulsory but you may feel your child could benefit from a little extra practice in these areas. Feel free to use this any way you wish.
Maths
IXL - We are currently learning about shape. Any of the W units would be beneficial to have a go at. Or pick any IXL units that you feel would help you improve on your personal maths goals.
Hit the Button is a great game to practise quick calculations like number bonds, doubling and halving, multiplication and division. Great for a quick 5 minutes here and there to keep your mental maths brain sharp.
Why not make it your focus over the half term to learn to tell the time on an analogue clock? This button above gives links to lots of tools and games to help you learn
And of course - TT rockstars!
English
The following activities will help you improve your skills over the holidays:
Spelling:
The first game below helps children to spell the tricky words for their year group.
The second spelling frame game goes through every spelling rule for every year group. If you are a bit rusty with spelling, you could practise some rules from Year 1 and 2 also.
Handwriting
It is amazing to think of all the opportunities for writing just one day in school provides. This continual practice allows all children to gain real stamina when is comes to this fine motor skill. However, pens and pencils have been replaced by keyboards for many and the ability to complete extended writing tasks is hard - because our hands may hurt!
We have set here some fun handwriting challenges but before you complete any handwriting get your hand all warmed up - this is a stage we skip - but as you do it with your child you will see just how important it is. Click on the warm up film to watch a warm up guided by an occupational therapist. This really helps strength and co-ordination. Now watch the Oxford owl guide for younger children.
Once you are feeling confident, practise sustaining your writing for 5 minutes. Grab a timer and see how much you write. Then write again the next day, and the next. You will be building up your stamina. A set of famous poems (twinkle models) have been attached for you to copy when you take on this handwriting stamina challenge!
Science
You have learned so much this half term about rocks and fossils. Take a trip to St Annes and see what type of rocks the buildings are made from.
Go to the rocky wall near the St Annes Swimming pool - can you find the fossils? Can you explain to your grown up how fossils are formed?
What type of rocks can you find on the beach? Can you test which is the strongest rock?
Finally Reading ….
No homework can have more impact or more enjoyment than reading! The AR quiz page has remained open for all the children so they can still quiz at home during this holiday. Don’t forget that libraries are open now - why not take a trip! Or you can read online:
