Double maths this week - please complete the double sided number bonds sheet and keep practising your number bonds to 10 20 and 100 at every opportunity.

Also please learn your three times tables for next week - you could use the’Help section’ on our page to follow the process as we used for the 2,s 5,s and 10,s. You could also play the class Bingo game we learned at curriculum evening - and in class!Don’t forget to use facts you already know - so for example, if you know 5 x 3 = 15 then you know you just need to add 3 to this to get 6 x 3. Also if you know 3 x 5 you automatically know 5 x 3.

Reading

Keep reading properly for 20 minutes a night/day. Many of you are doing so well because you are putting that effort in. It is lovely to hear you being so curious about what different words mean and getting really ‘into’ your books. WE may be having a ‘class recommendations’ wall soon in class to share books we like.

Spelling investigation

We have been learning about the meaning of different prefixes. Please use the sheet given out and a dictionary. Look up the meaning of the prefixes. Then find some examples of words with this prefix meaning. If your child for any reason does not have the sheet, there is a copy below!

Maths IXL units A12 A13 A14. Each unit goes beyond 10,000 when you get to about 80 points. You do not need to complete these parts if you are too confused - as we have only gone up to 10,000 in class.

Reading: Please continue to read for 20 minutes each day. This will help you to get really into what you are reading and enjoy your story.

B6 B9 P3 and P1. This last unit P1 is very tricky once you get past 85 points because it is in the tens of thousands. You can stop at 85 if this is too tricky.

Please read a really good book over the holidays and enjoy it. You will most likely be able to quiz on it when you get back to school!

Reading

I have met with each one of you this week to discuss your reading with you. We decided we MUST timetable in our reading at home to make sure we are doing twenty minutes at least, daily. Decide with your adults whether this will be in the morning, when you get home from school or at bedtime - then put it on your timetable to remind yourselves. It is crucial to put this time in at your stage in school so that you become passionate readers who give yourselves a chance to get really into the story you read. Reading is such a gift!

We have ten children in class who have now met their reading targets - we are aiming for the whole class by the end of this half term. Go for it children!

Maths

We have all been doing very well in our place value understanding. To consolidate please complete IXL units B4 B5 B7 and B8. Why not pace yourself and do one or two per day instead of all in one go?

Spellings

This week we have practised 6 year 4 key words and we have also looked at the suffix cian used for jobs. Please practice:

Have a go at explaining the process of germination in purple mash (2do Germination)

Explain the following in order:

  1. The conditions needed in order to germinte

  2. What happens to the seed first?

  3. Then what happens to the seed case?

  4. Then think root and shoot!

    Don’t forget your causal conjunctions (the language of explanation) eg in order to, consequently, this means that, this enables, at this stage, as a result

Reading!

Please do lots of reading over the weekend and read for 20 minutes each night - lets see how many children can meet their reading target this half term! Well done to Elise who has already met it!

Seed dispersal.

We have learned lots about seeds and how they disperse this week. Go on a walk around your garden or a park. Have a close look at the seeds in the plants. How do you think they disperse? Draw them in your homework book and see if you can write a little explanation of how you think they do it.

Our main categories were:

Wind: some seeds have parachutes, helicopters or shakers

Animal: Some get eaten, some get buried and some hitchhike on an animal’s fur!

Gravity - some are heavy and roll whilst others catapult out.

You could use some of our lovely language of explanation eg, in order to, as a result, consequently, since, because, this means that, this enables…..

Now you have your new ZPD I would like you to read for 20 minutes every day in Year 4. Make it a real priority!

As usual, please back your books in something that reflects your personality - you can use stickers, wrapping paper, photos anything you like but please make sure we can see your name on the front.

We have an exciting new program which can be done on any device or computer - purple mash You have had a go in class. I have stuck your username and password in your new homework books.

This week I would like you to log in (click link below) and CREATE YOUR AVATAR. You do this by clicking on the silhouette of a person by your name. It can be whatever you like!

Your second task is in your 2DOs list (in red at the top) You need to complete the 2DO ‘When I grow up,’ so that Mrs Lyons can find out more about your ambitions. Dont worry if you are not sure yet, (its not necessary to be sure at age 8!!) just think about what you might like to be and tell me why.
