Year 1 Homework 6.10.23

Reading Books

Please continue to read each day, little and often is best to start, the you can build it up. Some of the children are starting to quiz on their reading books. Use the bookmarks to help ask different questions about the story, can your child retell the story? These will help them answer a few questions on the quiz :).

Mary Seacole ongoing challenge

My homework challenge is to do some research about Mary Seacole that you can share with the class. You can be as creative as you like, think about how you might display, present or share this research in class. You might want to build a model to help, you could draw a picture and write some interesting facts like a fact file, or you might even want to make a video like a news report!

Please bring your research into school on Monday

I am excited to see what you discover.

Purple Mash

PLease continue to practise logging on and off Purple Mash.

Year 1 Homework 22.9.23

Reading Books

All the children now have reading books, I have also sent home a bookmark, these are to there to help support you, by giving examples of questions you can ask while reading.

The colour of the bookmark is not the RWI group your child is in, as all the reading schemes are different. However they link to the books they are reading, for example purple RWI will have blue bookmarks, green will have yellow.

Please read little and often, we want to encourage reading for pleasure, not turn reading into a chore. If you are finding that your child is reluctant to read at home or you have any questions please send me an email and we will come up with ideas to help support you.

From next week all children will be listened to in school by an adult.

Science Homework

My homework this week is to bring in or email me a picture of you when you were a baby please can this be done before Wednesday as it will link to our Science lesson.

It has been lovely to see lots of leaves arriving this week, the children have loved sharing their achievements with the class. I will hand some more out in the next few weeks, please email me if you need some more.

We have changed the library books and you should all have a RWI book in your bag. Please practise reading the RWI book and share the library book together.

My homework this week is to write a sentence about your weekend, have a look at the sheet for more information. I would love to see pictures or drawings so we can share with the class next week.

Year 1 Homework 8.09.23

This weekend I am sending home some Magic Moment leaves. These are providing you with the opportunity to share anything you would like to tell us about something good, polite, helpful or special that your child does out of school. It can be something as simple as folding up their uniform neatly, making their bed, working extra hard on their reading, using manners whilst out and about or achievements in and out of school clubs such as dancing, football etc.

We will share these in class giving your child a lovely opportunity to speak to an audience and be proud of their achievements. The leaves are then displayed on our tree on our classroom wall. Please don’t just fill them all in on day one. They are intended to be used only as and when they really do something special. Please let me know if you need any more.

We can’t wait to celebrate your child’s magic moments!

The children have all picked a book from our class library to take home and share with you this weekend. On Monday they will recieve their RWI reading book and once the children have completed their Star Reader test, they will have a reading book suitable for their reading ability, they can then select their own reading book. Please bear with us, we have had a few technical issues signing the children and myself on to the system, so it may take some time until it is all set up.

The children all have their own homework book. My first homework is for you to decorate it. Mrs Gregan has set the children a RE challenge can you go on a creation walk and discuss all the wonderful things that God has created? You can draw pictures, write about it or take a photo and put it in your homework book to share with the class.

Have a lovely weekend

Year 1 Homework 14.7.23

Thank you for all of your hard work, this year.

My homework is to please send in a large plastic bag on Monday as we will be preparing the children’s work, wellingtons and any belongings in their trays ready to take home on Tuesday and Wednesday. This will give us plenty of time to make sure all items have been returned! Thank you

We will also be collecting books in from Monday, we have changed them all today for a last read over the weekend and it gives your child to gain their certificates. The children can read their own books at home if they are a few away from their award, please ensure it is completed by Wednesday so we have time to hand them out. Thank you.

Year 1 Homework 16.6.23

The children have worked very hard this week and deserve a treat so my homework is to enjoy your weekend and have lots of fun, hopefully it stays sunny.

Once again thank you for all of your support, the children have made so much progress this year and I am incredibly proud of them :)

Have a lovely weekend

Miss Drummond

Year 1 Homework 26.5.23

We have been working on accurate reading rather than speedy reading in preparation for our Phonics screening, there are three things to remember: special friends (ai, igh, o-e), Fred Talk(sound it out loud), read the word. I have given everyone flashcards to practise their accurate reading it is not a race, it is important that they take their time, find the special friends first and say each sound this will help them blend properly. Try and practice words with chatty friends ( a-e, e-e, o-e, i-e, u-e) these are harder to find and alien words as we want to make then into real words. Words like whike, stroke, smung and spran are tricky as sometimes the children want to add extra letters (smung: smug/ suming, spran: sprant, or mix up ‘ro’ and ‘or’ stroke: storke). If you have any questions please email me and I can help.

Here are some more flashcards that you can use, if needed. There is no need to print them off you can show them on an iPad or computer.

Spellings will continue after half term so your child can focus on their phonics, please access these helpful resources below and use the websites the children love playing the games. If you any extra support, information please email me and I can help you.

Thank you for all of your support the children have made so much progress this year and I am incredibly proud of them :)

Have a lovely break.

Miss Drummond

Year 1 Homework 19.5.23

Please continue to read as much as possible at home. Unfortunately due to staff illness and time we have been unable to change all the books. If your books haven’t been changed we will change them on Monday.

I have sent home a Phonics sorting game for you to complete together at home. Ask your child to put their scanning goggles on to look for the special friends (ai, air, ire etc), chatty friends (a-e, e-e, o-e ect) and cluster blends (two or more consonants together, separate sounds that you squish together e.g. g-r gr. Please encourage your child to Fred talk, (sound it out loud) then say the word. Even if they are confident readers, this will help them during their Phonics screening, it’s very easy to make simple mistakes because they are rushing. It is important that they take their time so they are accurate with their reading and when reading alien/nonsense words that they read them carefully and don’t turn them into real words. They have been working very hard on this in their RWI sessions :).

Spellings will continue after half term so your child can focus on their phonics, please access these helpful resources below and use the websites the children love playing the games. If you any extra support, information or need anything printing off please email me and I can help you.

Year 1 Homework 12.5.23

Please continue to read as much as possible at home. I have sent home some Phonics screening practise words cards, you can cut them up and hide them around the house, turn then over and read them, use them as flashcards, read then colour, its up to you. Encourage your child to Fred talk, (sound it out loud) or Fred in your head (sound it out in your head) then say the word. It is important that they take their time so they are accurate with their reading and when reading alien/nonsense words that they read them carefully and don’t turn them into real words. Can they use their goggles to spot the special friends, chatty friends and cluster blends (two or more consonants together, separate sounds that you squish together e.g. g-r gr)? We are getting very good at this.

I have set for your homework a challenge to do some research and find an interesting fact about the royal family that you can share with the class. You can be as creative as you like and think about how you might display, present or share this interesting fact in class. You might want to build a model that explains your fact, you could draw a picture and write your fact like a fact file, you might even want to make a video like a news report!

Please bring you interesting fact into school by Thursday 11th May (or if it’s ready before that’s fine too!).

The children have worked incredibly hard this half term, I am so proud of them and the progress they have made. My homework is to rest and enjoy your break. If you get chance, it would be lovely to hear what you have been up to during the Easter Holidays and write a few sentences to share with the class :)

Unfortunately, I have not managed to complete a mock phonics screening with all the children due to our unexpected visitors. So, I will complete these after Easter and send packs home for you to help support your child at home. Don’t forget you can use all the resources on the ‘help your child at home’ to practise.

Please continue to read, we have put some extra books in their folders :)
