Class Council Speeches

Our leadership assemblies will take place next week, where our roles of responsibility are announced. For anyone who would like to be a class councilor this year and also be apart of the school council, then you are to prepare a speech to tell your classmates why they should vote for you. One boy and one girl will be selected as our class councilors. You can not apply for class councilor if you have already been one in a previous year.

Homework Books

As it is the first week homework handout of the year, the children are to design the front cover of their homework books. You can choose to back these books as it helps protect the condition of them. This is so we do not get these books mixed with our computing books (same size and colour).

History- London preparation- Due Monday 12th September

The children are to write 5 curious questions in their homework book that they would like to find out about the Houses of Parliament or anything else to do with London and their task is to find the answer when we go on Tuesday.

Music

The date for our music concert has been set which is Monday 10th July. All of the songs have been posted on Charanga under ‘Music Concert 2023’. Children are to practice singing these songs and also playing them on the clarinet.

These are the songs that we will be singing for the end of year play in Year 6’s performance of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. The children have all been given a copy of the lyrics for each song as these have been adjusted slightly to fit the theme of our play.

DISCLAIMER- The songs that we are singing will be slightly slower than the original versions of these songs so I would recommend slowing the audio down on the video.

Easter half term

There will be no formal homework over half term but it is important for the children to keep practicing their TT rockstars to keep up with their multiplication skills. Mr Cornwell is getting tired of all the children beating him on TTRS so he will also be practicing over the half term.

All the children have their end of year reading targets in their homework books so it is important for the children to continue with their reading over the half term and to try and reach their target.

A whole school competition to decorate a boiled egg in whatever fashion of your choosing. It will cost £1 to enter the competition, with the funds going to charity. There will be prizes for the best egg.

Science

To finish their solar system fact files. The children have been working these for 2 weeks so they all know exactly what they are doing. The steps for completing the fact file are;

  1. All information/research to be filled in.

  2. Colour all of the planets.

  3. Carefully cut out each planet, including its information box.

  4. Cut out the small circle at the bottom of each of the boxes.

  5. Place your split pin through all of your planet sheets to create a fan (cover sheet ‘The Planets, the Sun and the Moon’ should be at the front).

  6. Take a picture of your child holding their fact fan, which is to be stuck into their book.

    Children will have 2 weeks to complete this, so it will be due on Thursday 23rd March. Here is what a finished fact fan would look like.

Countdown

To the amazement of the Year 5 staff, majority of the children were unaware of the show ‘Countdown’, in which we have played this week to activate the children’s quick thinking skills . The game also gave us a chance to expand their vocabulary. Your task is to watch one episode of Countdown and play. This could be an opportunity for parents to play alongside the children. The children can write down their games in their homework book and we can share our answers next week.

Science

This week, we have looked at the life cycle of a star and the children have recreated their own life cycle posters from our textbook ‘The Universe’. This life cycle focused on the birth of a star. Your task is to create another life cycle of a star: How a star dies. This can be either created as a poster( one side of A4) and then stuck into your homework books or it can be created as a poster on purple mash. The information sheet has already been stuck in the children’s homework books. Here is some examples of life cycle diagrams for the children to use for their layout.


Lenten Boxes

Children are to make a Lenten box for their chosen Year 1 partner to collect money over lent. Use the ideas sheet to help create your box and bring it in on our first day back.
