Year 2 Home Learning Challenges - Thursday 18th June

Good morning Year 2. Just two more days of learning until the weekend. I wonder what you’ll learn today? …

Reading

Continue reading and quizzing on books using the Accelerated Reading and Epic Reading resources. Help can be found in the ‘How to help your child’ section of my page if you need it.

Remember, you should be reading for at least half an hour each day. Also try to read both a range of fiction and non-fiction books.

English

Day 4:

Watch and ‘read’ the picture book I Walk With Vanessa by Kerascoët with the sound turned off:
(Click the front cover below to be taken to the video).

Pause the story throughout to discuss what is happening on each page.

Now watch this version with the sound on:

Your task over the next two sessions is to choose between either one of the following:
Write the story to match the picture book or Write a story about a time when you have shown or seen someone else show an act of kindness that has spread. This might have been towards a friend, family member, new child in the class, etc.
Discuss your version of the story. Re-tell it out loud to a member of your family.
If you are going to write the story to match I Walk with Vanessa, you could rehearse your sentences out loud over the playing of the pictures.
If you are planning your own story, you could draw a story map of the key events, attaching some key words or phrases.

We have all enjoyed the first chapter of ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark’ together’ Can you complete the alliteration sheet attached below.

English

Day 3:

Watch and listen to We Are All Wonders by R. J. Palacio by clicking the book cover opposite.

Due to the sensitive content of this book, it is advised that the book is shared and discussed with an adult throughout the reading.

Points for discussion:

What does the word unique mean? What does the word wonder mean? What does the phrase hurt my feelings mean? How does the main character feel when others point or laugh? How does he feel when he puts on his helmet and travels across the galaxy? What do you think it means when the narrator says that perhaps people could ‘change the way they see?’ Talk together about how we are all wonders – include everyone in your household!

The book concludes with the sentence: Look with kindness and you will always find wonder.

Find some synonyms for kindness here:

Make a poster about being kind. Write the final sentence from the book – Look with kindness and you will always find wonder – in bold in the middle of your poster. Around the outside, record all the different ways you can show kindness. Remember kindness can often be shown in the smallest of actions, e.g. smiling, offering to help when someone is stuck, giving someone a compliment.

Try to make your poster as bright and engaging as possible. Put it up in your household to show everyone how you can be kind!

Imagine you are one of the wild animals trying to convince Kevin to come down from his tree. What might you say to him to persuade him? Write a persuasive speech to shout up to Kevin in his treetop! Try to include lots of reasons – you can use some of the ideas listed earlier in the book too!

You might want to use some of the following sentences or sentence starters to help you:
Kevin, I really do think you should come down from the tree now!
First of all ...
Another reason is …
Have you thought about …?
What if …?
When you come down, …
If you come down, …
Finally …

Remember to try and reassure Kevin – you are writing as if you are one of his friends!

Rehearse each sentence before you write it down to check it makes sense. Don’t forget to go back and read through your work to check for spelling and punctuation.

Day 5

Listen to the story of The Bird King:

Listen again and pause to make a list of all the birds who want to be ‘the bird king.’

Retell the story orally to each other. Use time sequencing words and phrases to help organise your retelling, e.g. Once upon a time …, first, next, after that, later that day, eventually, finally.

Your challenge today is to write your own version of The Bird King! Replace the parakeet, toucan, macaw etc. with your choice of birds. Perhaps you could include some birds that you have researched earlier this week!

Points to consider:
Why might each bird think that they should be the bird king? You could use this to highlight some of the birds’ special features, just as the birds do in the original (0:24 – 0:45 mins).
Think carefully about the bird which might replace the eagle. Which other large bird or bird of prey might fly so high?
Think carefully about which bird might replace the sparrow. Which other small bird could fly under the larger bird’s wing?
Talk about your ideas and your plan with an adult. Practise each of your sentences out loud before you write. Remember to keep reading through your writing to check it makes sense and to check for spelling and punctuation.

Reading

Remember, you should be reading for at least half an hour each day. Also try to read both a range of fiction and non-fiction books.

This week will be your second week learning about ‘Amazing Birds’. You all produced some brilliant work before the holidays so I can’t wait to see what you will achieve this week! If we were in school, we would have been enjoying one of my favourite stories ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark’ together, so to finish your two weeks of learning about Amazing Birds, I will begin reading this to you at the end of the week. I know you’re going to love it as much as I do!

Day 1

Enjoy the brief film clip of the blackbird feeding its chicks and the audio recording of a blackbird’s song. Discuss and marvel at each!

Look at the webpage RSPB Facts About Birds:

Read the section ‘I want to learn about …’ and use the links to read more information about the robin, house sparrow, chaffinch and blue tit. Note how each set of information is written like a series of clues, similar to a riddle, e.g. I see a bird with a chest of red, With black and white wings and grey on its head … It’s a chaffinch!

Your task today is to write a riddle(s) for other garden birds. Your riddle doesn’t have to rhyme and can include other information as well as appearance.

E.g. I see a bird that sings nearly all year round. It eats worms, seeds, fruit, insects and other invertebrates. Some think it is cute, but it will defend its territory. It is famous for its red breast. What is it? … It’s a robin!

Use the A-Z Find a Bird guide on the RSPB website to find key information on your chosen garden bird(s). Adult support will be required to read some of the information here.

Options may include: wren, blue tit, goldfinch, woodpigeon etc. Remember to sequence your information so that you only reveal the most obvious clue at the end! Test your riddle(s) out on your family!

Year 2 Weekly Home Learning Challenges - Week Beginning 18th May 2020

Good morning Year 2 and welcome to a brand new week of learning. Can you believe that this is the final week of learning before the half term holidays? I certainly can’t!

This week is going to be slightly different. I will be posting learning as normal for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Then on Friday, look out for something a little different to start the half term holidays.

Here are this week’s extra learning challenges to access throughout the week. As usual, anything you will need is attached below the picture, as well as a PDF version of the challenges to enable you to open links.

Year 2 Home Learning Challenges - Monday 18th May

Welcome to Monday’s learning Year 2. I hope that you all had a great sleep and are ready for the day ahead.

Phonics

I understand that the phonics videos are now repeating themselves because all of the sounds have been taught. If you feel that revisiting these sounds is worthwhile for your child, please do keep accessing the videos using the link below:

Reading

Continue reading and quizzing on books using the Accelerated Reading and Epic Reading resources. Help can be found in the ‘How to help your child’ section of my page if you need it.

Remember, you should be reading for at least half an hour each day. Also try to read both a range of fiction and non-fiction books.

It also isn’t too late to sign up for the Epic Reading resource. If you would like access to a huge range of books, some with quizzes, please send an email to l.woodend@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk. This will enable me to send you an invite to create an account.

English

Amazing birds! Prepare to be amazed! Over the next couple of weeks, enjoy finding out all about our amazing feathered friends, using a range of texts, online resources and articles.

Day 1

Discuss with your child: What do you already know about birds? What questions might you have about birds? E.g. Can all birds fly? What is the smallest/ biggest bird in the world? Where do birds live? Over the next two weeks, your research will hopefully help you in answering some of your questions! Ask your child to write down any questions they may have, reminding them to use question marks.

Watch What are Birds? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z6882hv/articles/zyd6hyc

Ask, what do you know about birds now? Watch the clip a few times, each time pausing to allow your child to record key facts. Perhaps you could record different facts on sticky notes and make a fact poster.

Now watch All About Birds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jF0Id-hH9y4

Record more key facts on sticky notes. Have any of your questions been answered already? Begin to pick out some new words and talk about their meaning, e.g. vertebrates, bill, habitat, camouflage.

Use Word Hippo: https://www.wordhippo.com/ to look up new words and find out what they mean. Practise putting any new words into new sentences.

Times tables

Click here for a website which will help you to practise your times tables even more. You can create a free account which will enable you to see which medals you have collected along the way. Remember in Year 2, our main tables to focus on are 2, 5 and 10, but you could have a go at 3s too for an extra challenge.

Don’t forget to check the weekly challenges for more learning!

Enjoy your day,
