To research the capital cities of the 23 countries of North America. These are to be included in the style of a poster, similar to last weeks geography homework.
Children to focus on getting through their book and ready to quiz on Monday when they’re back in school.
We are beginning our next geography topic next week, all about North America. Children are to create a research poster about North America with them putting their own design on their poster. This is for the children to build up some prior knowledge before coming into the lesson. Things to include in their poster;
Countries within North America
Location in the world e.g. hemispheres, oceans etc
Climate and weather
Will be on IXL. As the children have had a full week of area and scaling. It is important to keep topping up with their fractions understanding as we pick this up again next week.

We have now finished our Read Write Inc spellings (orange spelling books) and are now focusing on the statutory spelling list for Year 5. Most of these spellings have been covered in the Read Write Inc books so the main focus will be retrieving tricky spelling words.

The sheet used for this writing has been stuck in their homework folders.
There will be no formal homework over half term but it is important for the children to keep practicing their TT rockstars to keep up with their multiplication skills. Mr Cornwell is getting tired of all the children beating him on TTRS so he will also be practicing over the half term.
All the children have their end of year reading targets in their homework books so it is important for the children to continue with their reading over the half term and to try and reach their target.
Rehearsing assembly scripts- PRIORITY
Due to our visit of OFSTED this week, this meant that we lost 2 valuable assembly practice slots in the hall. Therefore, the main focus for homework this week is to practice our lines for the assembly. All children have been given a full copy of the entire script.
Egg Decorating Competition- Deadline Wednesday 5th April
A whole school competition to decorate a boiled egg in whatever fashion of your choosing. It will cost £1 to enter the competition, with the funds going to charity. There will be prizes for the best egg.
Spellings
Our focus this week were words ending in -cial or -tial but they sound like shul. All of these words are words containing this pattern.
We were focusing on tricky words again this week. This time with a focus on words including letters that are not silent but are quiet, meaning you can’t hear them but they can often be misspelt. The first 6 words are our new words for the week, with the other 6 words being other tricky words that we have done previously.

Assembly practice
All children have been given their roles for the assembly so the priority is for children to rehearse their lines and to make a note of when they are speaking.
Our spelling focus this week has been words ending in -tious. The first 7 spellings are words we have learned this week and the other 5 are tricky words that we have previously done this year.
A weekly SPAG sheet which has already been stuck in the children’s books.
Will be on IXL. The children have finished angles with Mrs Hotchkiss and have moved onto their new topic of negative numbers. Children are to complete these angle tasks as a part of their retrieval.

Reminder for children to finish their solar system fact fans. Details about this are on last weeks blog. Please take a picture of your child with their completed fact fans and then email this picture to me or print it out and bring it into school. This picture can then be put into their science books as evidence.

Spelling
This weeks spellings are our orange words(tricky words). The first 5 words are new tricky words that we have learned this week. The following 7 words are previous tricky words we have done before.

Will be on IXL. Children are instructed to use the short multiplication method, rather than the long method. Here is a picture of both methods side by side, to see how they are presented differently. Children can also use the long method to double check if they have the right answers.

Science
To finish their solar system fact files. The children have been working these for 2 weeks so they all know exactly what they are doing. The steps for completing the fact file are;
All information/research to be filled in.
Colour all of the planets.
Carefully cut out each planet, including its information box.
Cut out the small circle at the bottom of each of the boxes.
Place your split pin through all of your planet sheets to create a fan (cover sheet ‘The Planets, the Sun and the Moon’ should be at the front).
Take a picture of your child holding their fact fan, which is to be stuck into their book.
Children will have 2 weeks to complete this, so it will be due on Thursday 23rd March. Here is what a finished fact fan would look like.

As we have started a new half term, the children’s reading targets have been reset so children can start earning points towards their new targets now and shoot up our solar system.
This week, we have been looking at words containing double letters. The first 6 words are the new words we have looked at this week. The last 6 words are other double letter words that we have covered this year.
Their weekly sheet has been stuck in their homework books for them to complete.
To the amazement of the Year 5 staff, majority of the children were unaware of the show ‘Countdown’, in which we have played this week to activate the children’s quick thinking skills . The game also gave us a chance to expand their vocabulary. Your task is to watch one episode of Countdown and play. This could be an opportunity for parents to play alongside the children. The children can write down their games in their homework book and we can share our answers next week.
This week we have been focusing on words ending in -ant,-ance and -ancy.

A weekly SPAG worksheet which has been stuck in their homework books.
This week, we have looked at the life cycle of a star and the children have recreated their own life cycle posters from our textbook ‘The Universe’. This life cycle focused on the birth of a star. Your task is to create another life cycle of a star: How a star dies. This can be either created as a poster( one side of A4) and then stuck into your homework books or it can be created as a poster on purple mash. The information sheet has already been stuck in the children’s homework books. Here is some examples of life cycle diagrams for the children to use for their layout.
This weeks spellings have focused on homophones and other words that are easily confused. The children have written some tips to help them remember the difference between some of the similar words. The first 8 spellings are the spellings we have done this week and the other 4 are homophones we have previously done.

SPAG worksheet. This is already stuck in the children’s books and will include a similar style of questions from last weeks SPAG sheet. A reminder for children to bring in their homework folders before Thursday, so that their work can be marked and handed out.
Spellings this week are focusing on a different way the ‘ee’ sound is spelt in particular words. These spellings focus on the sound ‘ei’. The first 9 words are the spellings with the ‘ei’ sound and the other 3 spellings are words we have previously done.
SPAG worksheet. Some of the pieces of grammar on the sheet, have not been covered yet this year. We have breifly discussed how we may go about answering these questions without fully learning that piece of grammar, however children are to still attempt each question and we will discuss the answers in class.

Children to learn these spellings for their weekly spelling test on Wednesday. The children also have a copy of these spellings in their homework books. For practicing at home, the children can look up the meaning of the word and create sentences to help them practice and remember these words.
The children have completed their star reader tests, therefore their ZPD scores may have altered. Some children will have access to more books , in which they will take them home to read for at least 20 minutes a day at home.
