This week, in worship we have been thinking about Jesus as our teacher. We have also thought about how we can all be teachers and role models by following Jesus’ way. Children came up with the idea of spotting ‘the light within’ each other and telling the class when someone is a role model or teacher to others. We have been collecting names on the board.
In Shakespeare this week, children have impressed me with their reading of complete Shakespeare scenes and their excellent understanding and interpretation of what is going on! We have had Romeo and Juliet for the famous balcony scene, the tragic murders of Mercutio and Tybalt, the banishment of Romeo and the tragic deaths of the lovers at the end of the play. We have been picking out key themes from the story, such as revenge, romance, rivalry and holding grudges, leading to the final message that love needs to overcome hatred. Children produced some super descriptive writing based on the key scenes.
In our History we solved a mystery - of the empty grave found at Sutton Hoo. We used the Anglo-Saxon artefacts found there to discover who the owner must have been. In RE we have been reflecting on heaven. Children asked so many interesting questions, such as ‘How old is heaven?’ ‘Does everyone have a different vision of heaven,’ and ‘Is heaven over Jerusalem?’
In French, we have found out about different French festivals and discovered what months they were in. In Maths, we are now ‘Going for Gold’ and have learned our two gold facts this week - 5 x 9 =45 and 3 x 4 =12
Let’s Celebrate!
This week, we have 3 double whammy certificates - all Cooper Crab/ Sadie Spider certificates for a trio of boys. Louis, Toby and John-Paul you are role models in our class with your sheer determination in every lesson to do your best and the amount of focus you apply to everything you do. EXCELLENT!

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 26th January "Jesus said to him, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life."
It has been a very exciting and reflective week in Year 4! On Monday, we shared the gospel reading when Jesus first called his disciples. As Jesus called all of us by name to follow Him, children were tasked with finding out the meaning of their own name and making a little fish to go in the entrance. Their word of the week is ‘Follow’ and they have been trying hard to follow the path of Jesus in their words and actions.
This week we have got stuck into the World of Romeo and Juliet and have started feuding! We have attended the Capulet Ball where the fated lovers first meet and have created the scenes as a class. Children are loving this active way of learning.
On Tuesday, we had our amazing trip to UCLAN to study Cosmetic Chemistry. Children found out all about acids, alkalis and reactions. They made bath bombs and lip balms, thinking about changes from liquids to solids. They also watched a demonstration of dry ice turning straight to a gas and liquid nitrogen making a marshmallow so brittle that it could be smashed with a hammer!
Added to this was column addition and subtraction with 4 digit numbers in maths and finding out where in England Anglo-Saxons settled in History. What a cracking week of learning!
Let’s Celebrate!
This week, two Bobby Bee certificates are awarded to Seth and Tommy - you are buzzing with excitement in lessons and especially in Shakespeare where you are great at getting in role instantly! Also a Kiki Chameleon certificate is awarded to Beth for being so creative in all you do - especially your Shakespeare acting!

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 19th January "Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances!"
We have had a very active week in Year 4! In our RE this week, we have been reflecting on the bible stories of Jesus as a child and what they tell us about Jesus. We have reflected on the story of John the Baptist. Children have been planning their own worships to deliver in little groups over the next few weeks.
We have launched into our Shakespeare work this week. A lot of our focus has been on ‘building the spirit of our group’ and becoming attune with one another. The children have been outstanding at this! We have now been introduced to the characters in Romeo and Juliet and have started to think about our first (very tense) scene on the streets of Verona. I have added a little video of our action so far.
In mastering number sessions we have been rehearsing the 12x table and have pulled apart the 9x table, finding the easiest way of calculating it. In other maths, we have learned how to round 4 digit numbers to the nearest 1000, 100 and 10.
In our Science lessons, children have thought about gas - is it a state of matter? How do we know it is there? What is its structure?
All children are working so hard and thinking deeply. I know there are many illnesses going around and I hope all poorly children are feeling better. We have missed you all!
Let’s Celebrate!

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 12th January 2024 "The path is illuminated by the light within you."
What a lovely first week back for the new year! Children really seem to have grown over the holidays. This week, we started with a whole school assembly all about letting our light from within shine outwards to help others. Children thought about how they would like to share their unique light this year. On Wednesday, we went to church to see the new year in. Year 4 children sung their hearts out and looked after the younger children with such care.
We have had an exciting week of learning. In number mastery, we have focused on the 12x table. We will soon be ‘Going for Goals’ to master every times tables fact, ready for our multiplication check in June. We have also been comparing and ordering 4 digit numbers. In History we have started our new topic on the Anglo-Saxons. Children began by creating their own Anglo-Saxon society called Angleton. They found out about homes, way of life and society structure in these times. In Science we started our new topic (States of Matter) by making ice-cream. We saw our liquid mixture turn solid and then investigated the properties of solids and liquids. It was very successful - they all came out like ‘Mr Whippy’ and were delicious! Next week - gases! In English, we wrote our second persuasive letter in response to our novel, ‘The Butterfly Lion.’ All in all a very productive week indeed.
Let’s Celebrate!
This week, a Bobby Bee certificate went to Daisy for always giving her all and buzzing for enthusiasm in learning. A Sadie Spider certificate went to Lorenzo for working on his resilience and trying so hard in lessons. Joshua received a Lizzie Ladybird certificate for striving to improve in all he does. Well done!

It has been a beautiful week in Year 4 - full of reflection, joy and love. On Monday, I am sure you will agree, the children sang like angels and what a lovely gift it was! We made it our mission on party day to spread joy everywhere and as you can see from the video above, the children did just that. There is also a Christmas flute video below to wish you all a Merry Christmas from Year 4!
This week, children have stunned us with their excellent French clothing catalogues they have made to showcase their writing descriptions in French of what each model was wearing! The choir went to Stella Mattatina yesterday and did the school proud, singing to the elderly residents.

Year 4 Weekly blog 15th December 2023 "Joseph is just a man, chosen by God to be the earthly father of Jesus."
From Christmas performances to mummifying a class member, it has been a different and exciting week in Year 4! We have learned all about how Ancient Egyptians buried their esteemed members of society - and why they did so. Also, children have reflected upon all the amazing achievements of this Ancient civilisation. They have learned that there were other civilisations around this time nd that there were some commonalities between them. But whose civilisation was the most significant?
In our worships this week, we have learned about St Joseph and all his special titles which tell us what a kind, supportive and special individual he must have been. We have been trying to be like him each day.
In maths, we have been learning about the structure of numbers to 10,00 making sure we know what the value of each place in the number is.
We also got to watch the very magical Key Stage 1 nativity “Do not Be Afraid,” which taught us important lessons about not giving in to fear, panic and doubt - instead spreading joy, hope and peace - just like our Holy Family.
Let’s Celebrate!
This week, we have two Lizzie Ladybird certificates. What a beautiful week it has been in Year 4! This week, children have really blown me away with their enthusiasm for their writing! Everyone is trying so hard to use all the new skills acquired.
In RE this week, children have been learning about the true meaning of Christmas, about our Saviour who is three-in-one. They have asked some really profound questions! They created a persuasive poster to show why Christmas is so special.
Today, the children earned a Christmas crafts morning, where they also used their coding skills to create some super programs - and of course we had our amazing Bake Off. WOW! What a super effort - thank you all so much. Here are some pictures of our Christmas fun at the gingham altar!
In other news, we have started with our Christmas Concert rehearsals - and they are going well. Please continue to practise those songs at home.

Year 4 Weekly blog 1st December 2023 "Helpful people may be angels in disguise."
Our focus in RE this week has been about angels, since they seem to feature so much at this time of year. Children had so many questions about angels and spent time wondering about them. We then found evidence from the bible so we could figure out what purposes angels seem to have
In history this week, children proudly showed their amazing pyramids. We had structures you could eat, minecraft creations and some with real treasure. They were stunning! Children asked so many questions too - we did not find all the answers! However, we did discover who built the pyramids - thanks to a builder’s village excavated next to the Great pyramids. It was not as Disney would have us believe in ‘The Prince of Egypt’ film! Ask your children to explain.
In other news, some super problem solving in maths with larger numbers, french we have been learning all about clothing and in English we have studied our fairy tale ‘The Pied Piper,’ learning our own version and now it time to create our own stories.
Let’s Celebrate!
This week, a Sadie Spider certificate goes to Isioma for trying so hard in all she does. You are doing so well! Also a Kiki chameleon/Cooper Crab certificate goes to Grace. You can always be trusted to be ready to learn and you put so much thought into all you do. Well done girls!

Year 4 Weekly blog 24th November 2023 'You have been my friend," replied Charlotte. "That in itself is a tremendous thing."
This week, we have finished our first class novel, “Charlotte’s Web.’ Children have got so much from this amazing text - through the eyes of the characters they have learned what friendship is and isn’t. They have experienced fierce loyalty and heroism and followed Wilbur and Fern’s journey as they grew and changed. They have also developed analytical reading skills and written passionate letters of persuasion. We will miss these characters, but never fear! We will be starting a new novel next week and also progressing in our next unit on Fairy Tales
In history this week, we have learned all about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s grave and all the ‘wonderful things’ inside. Children have been intrigued by the mummy’s curse which apparently impacted after the discovery!
In other news, children have been showing off their skills in Coding in computer lessons and learning to calculate multiples of 100 over 1000.

Year 4 Weekly blog 17th November 2023 "Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour your Lord will come."
What a busy week we have had! In RE this week, we have been thinking about trusting in God. We have reflected on the trust that Zechariah lacked when the Angel Gabriel visited him and the great trust Mary showed when she was told by the same angel about her special baby. Also, we have thought about the person, Joseph and how he must have reassured her, showing such great faith. In our worship this week, we have thought about the above quote - how can we be ready for Jesus? How can we follow God’s ways in our actions, words, choices and prayers?
In maths this week we have deepened our understanding of place value with 4 digit numbers. We have been adding and subtracting over the 1000 boundary and have moved beyond 1000, counting how many hundreds are in larger numbers
In history this week, we have learned all about the everyday life of Ancient Egyptians by using evidence discovered. We solved a tomb mystery, giving stolen grave items back to their original (dead) owners and studied a beautiful wall painting to see what we could infer about Egyptian life - thinking like historians!
This week, we sadly say goodbye to our classroom assistant Mrs Grey. You have been a valued and loved member of our team. We wish you well in your new venture!
Here are some pictures of us at worship, work and play:

Year 4 Weekly blog 10th November 2023 "Keep my soul in peace before you Lord."
It has been a week of deep reflection in Year 4. In RHE this week, we have been thinking about how we can deal with tricky feelings such as frustration, anger and worry. We learned we can have strategies to be resilient to these feelings - one of the best ways is to think about what we can be thankful for instead. In our worships we have been thinking about having a peaceful moment with God each day, where we breathe deeply and are thankful for the gift of our life.
In maths this week we have moved on to understanding place value with 4 digit numbers. We have been breaking up 1000 to see what it is composed of. We have also in our mastering number sessions been studying doubles and how they relate to multiplication.
We have continued our novel ‘Charlotte’s Web’ which has seen us learning the art of persuasion. Wilbur is still going to be killed at Christmastime unless we persuade Mr Zuckerman otherwise in our persuasive letters! Be prepared for some very persuasive children at home!
In history this week, we have learned all about the Nile River and how crucial it was to the early Egyptian civilisation. Children worked brilliantly in pairs to type a factsheet all about the Nile.
Here are some pictures of us at worship, work and play:

Year 4 Weekly blog 3rd November 2023 “There is something about valuing people, not because they value you, but because you see God in them.”
Children have returned to school rested and enthusiastic about their learning! In RE this week, we thought about each of the 4 prophets from the Old Testament that we have studied and what we can learn about our relationship with God. In our worships we have been thinking about choosing love and showing how we value others by saying and doing kind things.
In maths, children have completed their unit on column subtraction. We have also started ‘Mastering number in Year 4’ which invovles 10 minutes per day to work on our grasp of multiplication concepts.
We have continued our novel ‘Charlotte’s Web’ which has seen us writing descriptive ‘extended noun phrases’ about characters and objects in the book. Children ranked the characters in order from kindest to unkindest and needed to justify their reasons by giving examples from the text.
We have begun our History topic on the Egyptians and children gathered clues to find out more about them. They learned the meaning of Bc and AD and how humans moved from being hunter-gatherers, to forming the first civilisations. They figured out by looking at Egypt on google Earth why the people may have settled in such a desert like place - all thanks to the Nile River!
Here are some pictures of us at work, at prayer and at play.
Let’s Celebrate!
This week, we have two Sadie Spiders who have shown consistent perseverance and determination in all learning for a number of weeks now. They are also learning partners! Well done to William and Sean! What cracking learners you are!

Even though it has been as short week, we have managed to crack on with column subtraction, learn about trade, export and import in Geography and also Deforestation. Children have completed their writing all about the Life Cycle of a Flowering plant. Busy!
In RHE this week, we have completed our 5th Kidsafe lesson. This was about how to deal with it if there is arguing and disagreements at home. We also recapped all our kidsafe safety messages from the programme and children completed an evaluation. Please read the letter below.

Year 4 Weekly blog 13.10.23 "Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is a success
This week has been a busy one in Year 4! We have learned how to write a newspaper report to tell everyone about the exciting news that Charlotte had miraculously woven words in a web on the barn. Children then wrote another newspaper report in RE to report about the ten plagues and Moses leading the Hebrews out of Egypt. Very dramatic!
We have been learning about the parts of a flower and their functions in Science. Children made their own flowers and bees out of playdough and then re-enacted Pollination. Children have worked hard to help each other this week and in many previous weeks. I have included a collection of pictures below to show a snapshot of our super learning over this half term. In Geography, chidren have learned about how plants can survive in extreme environments and have researched different deserts - including Antarctica - a cold desert. We have also begun column subtraction by playing the exchanging game seen in the picture above.
In RHE this week, we have completed our 4th Kidsafe lesson. This was all about how to keep our bodies safe. Children may want to talk about what they learned. We also discussed safe and unsafe secrets. Please read the letter below outlining the session.

Year 4 Weekly blog 29.9.23 "The difference between the impossible and the possible, lies in a person's determination
It has been a week requiring lots of determination in year 4. With assembly practice well under way, Year 4 have been a great class team - giving it their all. In maths this week, we have worked so hard to understand column addition - being able to exchange 1’s and 10’s now and do some really complicated ones. The children cheer when we do maths!
The children have loved being scientists this week and finding out the functions of different parts of a plant. We discovered in our carnations experiment, that the stem must suck up water to transport it to the flower! We also found out what a seed needs in order to germinate! Here are some pictures below. I would love to put further images of the children on the blog, but I am still waiting for 3 parental consent forms to be filled in.
In English we have been thinking of the big picture - why do we read? Why do people write? This led us to examine different text types and their purposes. Next week we will be writing our first explanatory text in Year 4 about Seed dispersal.
Also, this week we have completed our third Kidsafe lesson in RHE. This week it was all about being safe on computers and online. We thought a lot about film and game classifications and why they are there. We discussed how games and films beyond their years could impact their mental well-being. Please read the letter below explaining further

Also, this week we have completed our second Kidsafe lesson in RHE. Children discussed bullying and also identified their own trusted adults in their life. THey learned about the power of their voice and how it is important to be able to say, ‘no.’ Please read the letter below explaining further
We have been knuckling down in maths this week - learning the column method for addition and understanding why we need to regroup/exchange if we have more than 9 ones or tens. In English, we had a special visit from an author this week, Dan Worsley. He was fantastic with the children and helped them imagine their own pirate. Children produced some super writing on this theme.
We have loved finding out more about seeds this week, when we discoved how different seeds disperse (spread) We examined seeds with different structures and identified their method of dispersal. Many children came running in on Thursday with handfuls of acorns from our tree in the garden! It is lovely to see how motivated they are on this subject.
Swimming lessons are going really well - children were kept very busy by Gail and Graham this week. They were very hungry when they got back to school!

Year 4 Weekly blog "We are here to feel, wonder and gaze in awe at our beautiful world."
What a lovely week we have had in Year 4. In RE this week, we are learning about the bible. Children learned about how the bible is structured and they learned how to use a bible to find the correct chapter and verse in a book. Our focus is on the New Testament, so we began with the story of Abraham and how his great faith in God enabled him to be father of nations.
Also, this week we have completed our first Kidsafe lesson in RHE. Children discussed how we keep ourselves safe in general. We thought about what trust is and played a trust game. Then we identified ‘yukky feelings’ and how it is important not to ignore them. Please read the letter below which explains furher
The highlight of the week was our wonderful trip to Ashton gardens. Children loved the treasure trail where we found, named and described different flowers and trees. They collected seeds to bring back into class and it was so lovely to see their wonder when watching a bee drink nectar from flowers and pollinate them. Children did observational drawings of roses in the rose garden then had lunch and a play on the park before heading back to school. I have given them some homework this week that means they can get out in nature once more!
It was also a joy to welcome you into our class this week and let your children give you a tour of Year 4. It was so nice to meet you all. If you did not manage to come, don’t worry. Here is the power point shared at the induction evening.
Our first swimming session this week was a great success - no lost clothes and everyone remembered where their locker was! Children tried really hard and supported one another.
