Year 2 Weekly Blog Friday 30th June - Some beautiful things only grow with rain

In Science, the children have been on a material hunt! They looked at fixtures and fittings around the class room, identified the materials they were made from and listed their properties. We had some wonderful conversations about why certain material were used and what made them suitable. I wonder if the children could have a material hunt at home? What are objects made from? Why have these materials been used?

This week in our Geography topic ‘Around The World’, Bobby the Bee, visited Australia. The children located Australia on their maps and then got to work finding fantastic facts and information. They used their newly acquired computing skills to put their facts into concept maps on Purple Mash.

In English, we have watched the arrival of Prince Ali and the persuasive language we could use to convince people to watch the parade. The children came up with some fantastic nouns phrases to describe Prince Ali’s entourage.

Thank you for sending the children in with ingredients for wraps on Wednesday. The children are really enjoying this Design Technology unit with Mrs Neves and of course, learning some essential life skills.

Unfortunately our trip to Hope Street Park to bowl was rained off on Friday - we will try to rearrange this and send out details as soon as we can.

Next Wednesday we will be visiting St Annes library, if your child is a member of the library please send their library cards into school with them. This will be our last visit to the library in Year 2, but I hope these visits have inspired and ignited the children’s love of books and they will continue visiting themselves.

Let’s Celebrate

Well done to our certificate winners this week!

Year 1 Weekly Blog 30.6.23

We have been working very hard this week. We are looking foward to a very exciting week next week!

Maths: We have been looking at subtraction and making up our own number stories using the Rekenreks.

English: We made our posters independently I was verry impressed! We have started our train topic we read the books: ‘How to Train a Train’ and ‘Thomas goes Crash’ we have found out lots of interesting facts out about trains.

Science: we discussed signs of Summer and took a picture with our class tree, then compared our tree in the different seasons. We talked about the changes that happened each season and remembered that we were surprised during Spring because there were still no leaves on our tree! This was because it was so cold in Spring, it took a lot longer for the leaves to grow back on our tree we are pleased to see they have grown back in Summer.

Mass: yesterday it was lovely to walk with our Year 5 buddies, and the rest of the school to attend our reflective mass for the feast day of St Peter and St Paul.

Upcoming Trips:

We have lots of exciting trips coming up.

Ridgeway Farm:

On Tuesday 4th July we will be visiting Ridgeway farm, as part of our Science, Geography and DT topic.

If you have said you are bringing a packed lunch please bring it in, everyone else I have ordered school lunches.

Please wear appropriate clothing for the farm (non-school uniform) and bring a waterproof coat as we will be out in all weathers, it is recommended that you wear wellington boots, or old outdoor shoes.

On Thursday 6th July in the morning we will be visiting St Annes Farmers Market, we will meet and chat to the different stall holders to find out more about where their produce has come from.

On Tuesday 11th July we are going to look at St Annes Railway station and walk to the front to ride the miniature train and have an ice-cream. This is linked to our English topic Trains.

The total cost for these trips will be £13.50, Mrs Hodges has put the trip on Parent Pay.

Let’s Celebrate:

Well done to our awardees, a Bobby Bee and Sadie Spider for great enthusiasm in lessons and for not giving up.

Henry is going home with this person for a brilliant week in school, you have really been focused and a great role model.

Reading Challenge: Well done to these children who received their certificates, there are so many that are very close, keep up the hard work :). We have our first Emerald award too!

Sports Day is on Thursday 6th July at 1:30, we have been practising and are excited for you to come and watch us.

Reminders:

  • Preparing for the weather: As the weather is improving children are allowed to bring in a sunhat, which can be worn at break times and any sun cream that is brought in must be applied by the child themselves, roll on sun creams are easier to apply. We also ask that no sunglasses are to be brought into the school. Thank you.

  •  Please can you try and bring in healthy snacks for your children to eat at break times, we always have fruit in school that the children can have.

  • Please can you double check that all items of clothing are labelled.

  •  Please bring in spare clothes for your child.

  • Please check the home learning section for the homework,

Year 5 Weekly Blog 30.6.23 ' Being happy is the greatest form of success'

Another week has flown by as we enter the final month of the school year! Just under 3 weeks left. The learning has continued as always with our final English and Maths units getting underway. In English, we have been looking at discussion texts and how these are similar to debates. The children have loved applying their rapid reasoning to debatable questions and we have been looking at how to build upon a point of view.

In Maths, we have started our topic of statistics and have been reading/interpreting line graphs. The children have been using their logical thinking to estimate data tables to find approximate answers.

In RE, we have finished researching about different religions of the world, focusing on the ‘Big 5’. We will then be comparing and contrasting the different religions and discuss how we are similar and different to other faiths around the world. We have been focusing particularly on Islam in our History lessons- specifically the rise of the Islamic empire in the 10th century.

Countdown to the music concert- which takes place on Monday 10th July at 2:15pm- is getting closer and the children’s preparation is running smoothly. We will have a mix of different roles such as our class clarinet playing, grouped clarinet playing, singing and some children playing different instruments.

Let’s Celebrate

Christian, Edi and Connor-Sean for being enthusiastic and focused learners: We are just under 3 weeks left from the end of the year and yet you boys are still super focused throughout lessons. Your enthusiasm for learning still thrives each day and you throw yourself into whatever task is set. You will definitely deserve your 6 week break. Keep this up in Year 6.

Virtue butterflies: This week our butterfly goes to Molly-Ann for being intentional. You have really been taking care of others around you when they are feeling down. You have consoled your classmates with care and kindness. A beautiful sight to see.

  • Extra Curricular Activities: The schedule for Summer 2 has been posted on the sports page of the website [engage-> sport] . This includes cricket club on Tuesdays after school (3:30-4:15) which you will have to sign up for and athletics which will take place on Wednesdays at lunchtime. Unfortunately, the two upcoming events for these sports have been cancelled but inter-school tournaments will be held for each of these. More information is available on the sports page.

  • Sports Day for Year 5/6: The rescheduled date will be on Wednesday 12th July at 1:30pm.

  • Clarinet Concert: Will take place on Monday 10th July and parents are invited into school to watch and will start at 2:15pm. Next weeks lesson will be on a Tuesday instead of a Monday. If you would like to bring in your clarinet on Monday and leave it there then that is okay.

  • End of Year Play- Year 5 will take part in the Year 6 end of year play which will be held on Monday 17th July and Tuesday 18th July- both starting at 6:30pm. Information about tickets are on the ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ blog on the Year 5 page.

Music- PRIORITY

Our music concert is less than two weeks away (10th July) so it is vital that we are all practicing the songs for this. They are all on charanga saved under the file ‘Music Concert 2022-23’

This week...

It has been a week full of spotting patterns in the environment. We have seen patterns everywhere and even made our own!

We played a ‘Shape pattern’ game too! Click here to play at home.

The children have been watching and waiting for our butterfies to emerge…not yet Im afraid. We will keep watching, it can’t be much longer.

If you click on the button below you will be able to join in our rhyme about the life cycle of a butterfly. I bet the children can tell you all about it.

Steph’s blog

Hello everyone

We have continued being fascinated by sunflowers this week! We have put our paintings up on the wall in the nursery and have created even more sunflowers this week using coloured tissue paper. We worked hard to choose the correct colours and put them in the right place to make sure our sunflower was soooo beautiful.

We have also carried on taking care of the sunflowers we have brought in from home. We have 2 beautiful big yellow flowers and there’s are others that look like they may flower soon too! Maybe over the weekend they will.

We all still love dressing up - getting out the box of different materials gave us lots of opportunity to be creative. We were superheroes, wizards and sports people! We had so much fun doing this in the sunshine in the garden.

We have enjoyed a big hunt this week. We love going around the garden with the clipboards finding out. We feel like real explorers, especially when we use the explorer backpacks with binoculars and magnifying glasses! We drew pictures of what we found, and also of our favourite bugs. Here is the template we used, why not have a go at home: Click here

We have continued practising counting and ordering numbers to 10 this week. We are going to know so much when we go into Reception! Here is a game to practise at home: Click here

Hopefully the sunshine will continue over the weekend!

See you next week.

Steph

Michelle’s blog

Hello everyone and welcome to this week’s blog.

This week has been  all about squirmy worms. We found out that worms don’t have any eyes, or ears or even a nose! But they are really important in our gardens. Nothing will grow without worms. So, we went on a worm hunt, trying to dig them up. I’m sad to say, that we didn’t find any worms, we think we may have scared them all away. This didn’t stop us from making our own worms from pipe cleaners and singing our favourite song about worms, ‘There’s a worm at the bottom of the garden’. I think some even managed to wriggle their way into our bags this week, you may have found them at home. You can use them to sing along with Mr Tumble, click here

We have been in a musical mood this week so we had our own marching band in the garden, singing our favourite nursery rhymes which may have involved bananas and pyjamas. If you don’t know this one then I’m sure your child will sing it for you. It starts ‘Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, eating a bunch of bananas….’

We have been practising some new skills this week, as we used the ribbons to thread and make patterns in the garden. They look so pretty blowing in the wind, but it was really tricky to thread them through the frames. Threading is an important skill to learn as it helps us as we learn to hold a pencil and form letters when we start to write. Here is another really good activity for developing fine motor skills, click here

We also had a tricky challenge of moving the ball just using our legs and feet on the wobble board. This is really tricky and took lots of concentration. But we got there in the end. Try, try, try, just like Sadie Spider.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week.

Michelle

Emma’s blog

Hello!

We have had an exciting week, full of fun!

Firstly, the caterpillars are now in their cocoons, which the children have been very excited about. We have even made our own cocoons by wrapping ribbons and string around a cocoon shaped piece of card, and then hanging them from the ceiling. We have also been looking at some real, now empty cocoons and talked about what patterns, shapes and colours we could see on them. We wrapped two of our children up just like a cocoon using toilet roll (clean of course!!) which they all found so funny, but it showed the children what the caterpillars did to build their cocoon, and how they then emerge when they are a butterfly. It was funny for everyone to watch. I wonder what will happen in the coming week with our cocoons, mmmmm?

The children have been exploring patterns this week using shapes and colours and to keep with our mini beasts theme, we made a large spider and gave it two colour pattern legs using blocks.

Our snails had a great week in our snail hotel, but we decided to put them back in the garden. The children said their goodbyes and watched them slide off into the bushes. The next day, the children went out to see if they could see them in the area where we released them but sadly they had disappeared (I can’t blame them!) . One of the children did though spot a snail trail going into the reception class garden. We did follow the trail to see if we could find our snails but only found one more trail, and definitely no snails. If you live close to nursery, please keep a look out and say hello to our snails (numbered 1 - 6!).

Have a wonderful weekend

Emma

Library

As we are quickly approaching the end of the year, could I please ask you to return any library sacks that you may still have at home. We will have to collate, prepare and wash everything ready for Sepetmber! A huge task I fear! Thank you so much.

Leavers party

Watch out next week for more info on this years Leavers Party!!

I think that’s all for this week, but I do always manage to forget something!

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy Lytham Festival if you are going!

Year 6 Weekly Blog 30.06.23 “Don't forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he wanted.” Charlie Bucket: “What happened?” Mr. Wonka: “He lived happily ever after.”

Dancing, singing and laughing has most definitely been the theme for the week this week in Year 6! You are in for such a treat with their end of year play. When I watch them on stage now, I can’t believe some of them are the same children that started the play 3 weeks ago. Their confidence has grown so much and are now so much more comfortable on stage that they are bringing their characters fully to life! This week we have more or less completed the play, with just the final scene to go, so next week we will be running from the top all the way through each day, to tweak any changes we may need to. Please make sure Year 6 spend some time this weekend going back over all of their lines, thank you. On Monday, we will be starting to try on our costumes to ensure children have got everything they need, so please make sure all items they need arrive in to school by this time if needed. If you have not heard about costumes as yet, then you will on Monday! This is a long process, so bear with us. Thank you to all those who have sent in costumes and items already!

Year 6 have been so busy in class too, during play rehearsals, they have continued to work hard on their class novel ‘Skellig’, looking deeper in to the text by answering some tricky comprehension questions. Maths fluency and reasoning has continued with puzzles and problems and the children have started their transition lessons, where we talked about how we choose our own attitudes and reflected on what we need to do to be a ‘kid awesome’ and become success learners!

Year 6 have excelled in their jobs around the school this week and the teachers have been praising them on their support within the classroom, in fact I think they wished they were in there permanently. They have sat with the children in their class at lunchtimes to help keep the noise levels down, they have been supporting them in their work, reading with children and even building towers in Reception…

Such a shame about the weather on Wednesday, typically the sun was shining the next day! Don’t forget the new date for Sports Day is 12th July, 1:30pm.

Well done to James and Hollie-Rose

Hollie-Rose, you are so pro-active and hands on, always ready to help when needed and see what needs doing! You are such a caring learner partner, thank you for always having patience and showing love to your classmates- you make our class a happy place to be!

Wow James, you astound with just how resilient and determined you are at learning all of your lines- and you have tons! Not only do you come prepared, clearly having practiced your expression and understanding of what you are saying but so much enthusiasm! You are a joy to work with on stage and that smile is contagious! Thank you for making my job as director so much easier.

Intentional and Prophetic Butterflies

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that are intentional in the choices they make, thinking about the impact this has on the world and others around them. We will also be spotting children who are prophetic, who do good deeds and who stand up for that is right. This week we thank Christian for being intentional and prophetic.

This week we have the following children helping to take the younger children to their class:

Jacob O James Jack Abi

Food Technology

On Monday the children doing dessert will be cooking. They have a list of a few ingredients they need. The following children are going to be making the food:

Group 1:Harriet, Holly, Jacob M, Kai

Group 2: Jacob O, Julia, Stephanie, Thomas, Mason

St Bede’s Transition

Children are being picked up at 9:20 by members of staff from St Bede’s and will be dropped off back at school just before pick up time. Children all need to bring £2.40 for their school dinner- please don’t forget.

Final Notices:

St Bede’s Transition Day: Tuesday 4th July and LSA transition day Thursday 6th July

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory performances: Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th July at 6:30pm.

Leavers Mass Wednesday 19th July 9:30-10:30am followed by the leavers day outing.

Thursday 20th July- Break up at 2pm.

Have a lovely, restful weekend.

Athletics Update

Unfortunately, due to the industrial strikes that are planned for consecutive days next week, transition days for Year 6 pupils in our cluster have had to be rearranged. This has meant that one has fallen on the day when the athletics event was due to be held. All of our schools in our cluster have pupils attending this day - in some cases the entire Year 6 cohort. Therefore a decision has been made to cancel the athletics competition this year. It is just too difficult to organise and to find another date is impossible with end of year plays and trips taking place.

We will be holding a intra-schools competition instead on Tuesday 11th July from 3.30pm - 5.00pm at school. All of the children who have attended athletics club from Year 3-6 are invited to attend and will be able to sign up for events next week. Certificates and medals have been ordered. I am hoping that this will be an elite competition! Parents, of course you are invited to come along and support the children.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Tickets

Tickets are now ready to go on sale for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There will be three performances that you can buy tickets for:

Monday 17th July - 6.30pm

Tuesday 17th July - 9.30am

Tuesday 17th July - 6.30pm

Each family will be offered 3 tickets that can be used across the performances, not 3 tickets per performance. For example, you may request 1 ticket for Monday and then 2 tickets for the evening performance on Tuesday.

There will be a waiting list for any additional tickets. Tickets are £3 each - the maximum you need to pay on Parent Pay is £9. Please complete the form below indicating how many tickets you require. Please complete the form if you feel like you will require additional tickets. Do not pay for these yet.

Cricket and Athletics Update

It is certainly very busy in school at the moment, and the notice that there will be further industrial strikes has complicated matters a little more. The announcement that industrial action will take place on the 5th and 6th of July has meant that transition days for high-school and sporting events have been rearranged; some schools can now not take part.

CRICKET

After much deliberation, the cricket tournament for this Friday will go ahead at Kirkham Cricket Club. The following children have been chosen to represent the school:

Year 6: Isabella, Abi, Jack, Keifer, Arthur, Jacob O

Year 5: Owen, Stanley, Edi and Charlie

The afternoon is due to run from 1pm -4pm, however, the nature of cricket may mean that this is shorter. The children who have been selected need to be collected from school at 12.20pm and taken to the event. They will have their lunch before they go. If you have a problem with transport, please do let us know in school and we can problem-solve it together. The children will need to be in full Our Lady PE kit with drinks and snacks.

ATHLETICS - Thursday 6th July at AKS

The athletics is a little more complicated as the LSA Transition Day for Year 6 children has had to be moved to the 6th because of the industrial action. There is an awful lot of Year 6 children in our cluster of schools now attending. Some schools have already withdrawn from this event because of circumstances beyond their control. Watch this space, as soon as I know what is happening, I will update this blog in the next day or two.

I can’t believe we at the end of another week already! Even though there are only a few weeks left we have lots of exciting activities planned.

Maths: We continued our addition work and made up our own number stories using the ten frames, ‘first I had 5 chocolates, then I had 3 more, now there are 8 chocolates’ we used 2 different colour counters to represent our objects and told our stories the class. We were very creative.

English: We discussed pet shops and looked around one online then we came up with our own sentences, ‘I went the the pet shop and saw a fluffy dog with a long tail’. Gym Jam Jog: What a great turn out we loved running in our Pjs and eating toast together in the classroom. Thank you for your support it was lovely to see all the children and grown ups enjoying themselves.

Yesterday we all completed a mini first aid course, we learnt how to put a plaster on, who we call when there is an emergency and what we can do if someone is lying on their back and needs help. Henry is going home with this person for a brilliant week, you have been a very kind friend and been very focused in all lessons especially RWI.

Reading Challenge: Unfortunately due to staff illness, we didn’t get chance to check certificates or change books, we will do this next week. Thank you for your understanding.

    Have a lovely weekend

Year 5 Weekly Blog 23.06.23 ' High school is about finding who you are because that's more important than trying to be someone else'

With only 4 weeks left of Year 5, things are certainly not slowing down as we have had another jam-packed week. As the year comes to a close, we have been starting our final topics of each subject and the children have had a taste of what some lessons in Year 6 are like with lots of independent work.

At the beginning of the week, we stepped up our music concert practice again as we prepare for the big day which is on Monday 10th July. We also finished our class novel of the ‘Windrush Child’, which focused on the migration of Jamaicans post world war two into England and the racial injustice that came from this.

The class also continued with their food tech lessons- this week having a tasting session of some of the foods that they are either going to use or make themselves.

On Thursday, we took another trip out of school as we went to St Bedes for a high school taster day- with all things Science & Technology. It was brilliant for the children to experience a day in the life of a high school pupil and for them to take in the surroundings of their own potential secondary school. The class was split into two groups, with one group going off into science and the other to technology. Food technology was the focus and the children got to practise their cooking skills as they made pizza whirls. It was a murder mystery for the science group where they explored the world of chemistry and carried out 3 mini experiments to work out who the killer was!

On Friday, some of our children got the opportunity to take part in the swimming Gala- an event that we have not had for years. Performing in front of a packed out crowd with lots of noise can be daunting- especially for a 10 year old- so the children did excellently to handle the pressure. We managed to qualify for 6 of the final events with 2 of our girls winning their semi- final races. I couldn’t be prouder of everyone who took part and I look forward to you competing again next year.

Let’s Celebrate

Lily-Mae for being an enthusiastic and focused learner: As we start another history topic, your enthusiasm and focus has sky rocketed yet again. Your hand is always up to answer a question or to share your knowledge with the class. Keep this up in Year 6!

Millie and Iris for being determined and brave learners: Even though you are both quiet girls when it comes to expressing yourself- your talents certainly overshadow this. Your performances in the swimming gala today were outstanding as you both came from behind in your races to win for our school. I expect to see you both their next year.

Virtue Butterflies: Christian has been chosen for being intentional. Christian has been spotted help calming down and cheering up his classmates when they have been angry and your calm and gentle approach really does make you an asset to our class.
