Year 1 Weekly Blog 10.2.23

We love our music lessons with Miss Lavelle, on Monday we had to keep to the beat to the sparkle song, we made our own orchestra and had to take it in turns to play our instruments.

On Tuesday it was Online Safety Day we had a lovely day filled with lots of different activities. We made our own online safety posters, listen to the story of Hanni and the Magic window and created our own windows and learnt this online safety song to help us remember how to stay safe online.

On Wednesday we went to church to see Father Peter and learn about Baptisms and look at the features of a church. We asked him some questions and found out lots of information. We enjoyed our Baptism of baby Elizabeth, we even had parents and God parents to help with the ceremony. We celebrated her being welcomed into God’s family by having a party today, she even had her own cake! It was lovely to see and discuss our own Baptisms, thank you for completing the homework.

We loved looking at our amazing display in the worship area and finding all of our work, we felt proud to see it displayed for the whole school to see.

We orally retold and wrote the story of Where the Wild Things Are in English. We are looking forward to our next topic Peter Rabbit after half term.

Today we went into Year 5 to meet our Lenten box buddy’s, your child will have a slip of paper with their buddy’s name and their interests to help you with your decorations. I am excited to see your Lenten Boxes, please bring these in during the first week back to school.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 3.2.23

On Tuesday it was Mental Health Day we had a lovely day filled with lots of different activities.

We discussed the importance of looking after our minds and bodies, by finding out how we can stay healthy and we helped Rodd learn about getting enough sleep if we don’t, we can become forgetful and it can affect our mood.

First we drew something that made us happy, something we were good at and something we enjoyed. Then we loved our yoga session with Little Yogis. We read Ruby’s worries and created our own, thinking about things that made us feel worried and what we can do to help us feel better.

We thought of things we were grateful for, said what had gone well for us on Tuesday. Went on a mindfulness walk around the playground with a partner, where we had a chat and discussed our surroundings. We made collage rainbows to remind us to stay calm and take a deep breath, drew our happy place, created and coloured in our own colour monster, made feeling faces with playdough and on the computers, listened to music, danced before lunch. Worked together to pass a spoon with water on to each other and finally at home time listened to ‘be the pond’ the fish are our feelings if we remember to be the pond and not the fish they can swim away. The children were told their secret friend, they made sure they were extra kind and we guessed who they were today.

The second group finally went on our Geography school trip, we had to look for human and physical features around St Annes, and they were brilliant. We even enjoyed a few games on the beach before coming back to school.

We have been busy in Maths and English continuing our more than, equal to and less than symbols and we started to look at what whole meant ready for next week. We have also started to partition numbers up to 7 practically and writing our answers down in a part part whole model. We made up our own actions to retell ‘Where the Wild things are’ and wrote the begining of the story. We also started to mark and edit our own work! Focusing on full stops, finger spaces and capital letters, we did this in pairs and decided if we had met the objectives and what our next steps would be when we finish our story next week.

We loved sharing our Purple Mash homework in class and have enjoyed our computing lessons, please practise logging on and off independently as much as possible so we can spend more time on our lesson and learn new skills.

Let’s Celebrate:

Well done to our awardees for super sentence writing in English and for remembering their chatty friends in phonics.

We have started our computing topic this week, please can you practise to log on and off at home and complete the homework I have set on purple mash. This will ensure we can teach the skills and have more time to complete the activities. Look at our amazing ginger bread men pictures we have created.

To help us think of some adjectives for our writing we went outside and pretended we were in the deep dark woods. Every time the tambourine rang we froze then someone would tell me what they could see, hear or feel. This gave us lots of great ideas and was reflected in our writing.

We have continued looking at the less than, equal to and more than symbols in Maths and we are all working hard on this. We have subitised the numbers 5–9 and represented them on a rekenrek and identified different ways of seeing parts within a whole. Using the stem sentence_____ is the whole; _____ is a part and _____ is a part and _____ can split into _____ and _____ ; _____ and _____ combine to make _____ . I was very impressed!

Let’s Celebrate:

Well done to our awardees for super sentence writing in English and self assessing their work and using a purple pencil to fix it.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 20.1.23

We have had another super science week, this week! We continued discussing different materials and their properties and groups some objects together by their properties. Then the Three Little Pigs left us a letter asking for our help! They needed to go to the shops but it was raining so we decided they needed an umbrella. We had to test different materials to see which would be the most suitable then we designed an umbrella for them. To make it a fair test we used a pipette to drop 6 drops of water on each material to see what would happen. The plastic bag was the most suitable because it is waterproof and strong. We have started our Winter Weather Chart and discussed signs of Winter and observed our class tree we discovered our tree is a deciduous tree because it loses its leaves.

We created our own Monster and made a poster in English writing descriptive sentences. We started to look at the book Where the Wild Things are, before we started reading we looked at one page and thought of different questions we could ask. We learnt a new saying to help us remember to use capital letters, finger spaces, stay on the line and use a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Ask your child to show you.

We have continued looking at the less than, equal to and more than symbols in Maths and we are all working hard on this. We discovered that you can make even numbers with two even numbers or two odd numbers, but to make a odd number they could only be made with one even number and one odd number!

In RE we discussed the special occasion of Mary and Joseph taking Jesus to the temple as a baby and we learnt about Simeon and how he knew that this baby was God’s special gift to everyone. We acted out the story. We have also been thinking about how we can show the Light of Jesus’ Love in our class and why Jesus is the Light of the World.

Let’s Celebrate:

Well done to Ruth for being such a good role model in class and Patrick for supporting his partner during RWI by using his story voice and encouraging his partner to do the same.

We all learnt a gymnastics routine, we walked to the mat, did a pencil roll, then a star jump and caterpillar walked back. These PE superstars worked well with their partners and listened to the instructions well done.

Henry is going home with this person for working hard on their reading they have not given up even when they have found it challenging, well done.

Reminders:

  •  Please bring in spare clothes for your child, especially now the weather is wet. So they can get changed if they fall over and have wet clothes.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 13.1.22

We had a super science week, this week! On Tuesday we started by reading and acting out the Three Little Pigs. Then we had the challenge of making our own houses in groups, each table had a different material: straws, paper, hay, lolly sticks and bricks. We predicted that the bricks would be the most suitable for the house because they are ‘strong and can stand up on each other’. We thought that they hay would be the most difficult because it is hard to stand up. After we made our houses the big bad wolf tried to blow them down and we helped too! The bricks were very strong, but they hay group managed to compact their hay and put lots of tape around it, although at the start they found it very difficult to stand up. We thought that if they hay went outside it would blow everywhere.

Then we went on a material hunt to find objects made from: glass, metal, wood and plastic, we discussed their properties and used the labels to help us decide.

In English we have started writing our sentences independently, Miss Drummond was very impressed. We are applying our phonics knowledge and remembering how to spell our tricky words. We answered questions about Owl or Snake and started to make our wanted poster for the Gruffalo.

We have started to look at the more than, equal to and less than symbols practically making two towers and using our lolly sticks to make the symbols. We have continued comparing different amounts and looking at the number 9. Ask your child if they can tell you all the different ways to make 9.

Let’s Celebrate:

Well done to our certificate awardees for foucing on their letter formations and not giving up when they find it difficult and for super writing in English.

We had five PE superstars today, we focused on our bear walk and crab walk, all the children worked really hard with their partners, well done.

Henry is going home with this person for working hard on their reading they have not given up even when they have found it challenging, well done.

Reminders:

  •  Please bring in spare clothes for your child, especially now the weather is wet. So they can get changed if they fall over and have wet clothes.

  • Please check the home learning section for the homework, It is really important that you are reading reguarly at home so your child can make good progress with their reading especially as they will have their Phonics screening in June.

  • Please make sure you don’t bring any nuts in for snack or in packed lunches, thank you.

  • Medical cream/lip balm: some children have been sharing lip barm at playtime and lunchtime, so lots of germs are being spread around the class. Please remind your child that their lipbarm is only for them and they are considered medical in school. So they need to hand them in to me and they can applied when needed. They can either stay in school or be handed back at the end of the day.

It was a lovely start to the week as we watched the Reception and Nursery Nativity, it was brilliant! We have been practising all week so we are ready for our performances on Tuesday and Wednesday we are excited to show you how hard we have been working on it.

In Maths we have continued counting to 10 in different ways. Starting at a specific point and spotting mistakes, I counted some animals Infront of the class, I said there were 7 but there were 8! I forgot to count the big teddy bear. The children helped me each time to ensure I counted all the animals.

On Wednesday we went to Christmas Mass at church, we paired up with the Year 5s it was lovely to hear lots of different conversations between the children. We sat beautifully and prayed for our loved ones and thought about how important it is to be kind to each other. In RE we have been discussing the Christmas story.

We have loved reading the book Dangerous, we have retold the story both orally using our story maps and written it down in our English books. We even remember to say when we needed a full stop of exclamation mark!

Before we went on our school trip we learnt about human and physical features and worked in groups to identify them. We enjoyed our Geography school trip to St Annes Beach we filled in our sheets to identify human and physical geographical features along the way. The rest of the children are excited to go next Thursday. Children will not need to bring anything extra with them for the visit and should come to school in their normal uniform. If you do not already have wellies in school please can your bring in a pair or bring in suitable footwear such as trainers or walking boots, as we will be going on the beach. Scarlet Fever and Group Strep A Infections - Guidance

Dear all,

There is growing concern amongst the community regarding iGas/Scarlet Fever, we have placed here the guidance school has received to share with you. Thank you for always communicating with us illnesses and absences. This is so important as it helps us to build a picture of the whole community and from this we are able to take any action should it be required.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 2.12.22

This week we have continued our Science topic, looking at the structures of a variety of common animals and discussing the similarities and differences. We have also grouped these animals into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

In RE we have been discussing Advent, we know it is a time when we prepare to celebrate the birthday of Jesus. We created our own advent wreath and discussed that the circle of evergreen branches is a reminder that God does not change. A new candle is lit each Sunday during Advent until all four candles are burning. Each candle has a different meaning. The final white candle is lit on Christmas day to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Each Monday we are lighting our candle to show the passing of time and our closeness to Jesus’ Birthday.

We have also discussed the journey Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem and that the shepherds were the first to hear about the birth of Jesus. We interviewed the shepherds. Year 1 asked them lots of curious questions such as:

How did you feel when you saw the angels? “We felt shocked and surprised.”

What did the angels tell you to do? “The angels told us to go and find baby Jesus.”

How did you get to the stable? “We followed the star in the sky.”

What was it like when you saw baby Jesus? “It was wonderful and exciting!”

When you left the stable, what did you do? “We told everyone the good news.”

We have enjoyed lots of practical Maths this week investigating the number 10. We also finished off our measuring unit by asking some challenging questions such as can you find me something that weighs more than a glue stick but less than the scissors? Which is longer three rubbers of two pairs of scissors?

On Thursday when we arrived to school, we discovered an advent calandar and some wrapped presents. Each day two children will get to open the advent door for a treat and to find out what our advent promise will be for the evening or the next day. It may be something like saying hello to everyone or helping out at home. Ask your child if they can remember what the advent promise is for the day? We found out that the presents are Christmas books and we are excited to find out what book it will be each day and listen to a story before we go home.

 Let’s Celebrate:

Year 1 Weekly Blog 25.11.22

This week we continued with our science activities focusing on animals, we have identified and classified them into: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and birds.

In RE we learnt about Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth. As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary, her baby leaped with joy. Elizabeth said that Mary and her baby were very blessed by God. We reflected on the good news and drew a picture of Mary and Elizabeth and explained what had happened.

We have continued measuring in Maths, we love all the practical activities and when we were weighing we discovered that sometimes the biggest object isn’t always the heaviest. We have also been focusing on the number 8, ask your child how many different ways they can make 8? Or if I have… how many more do I need to make 8? Practise the stem sentence 8 is made of ….. and …./…. and …. make 8.

Today we had a whole class art lesson together, we create our own winter trees, don’t they look amazing :).

 KidSafe

Year 1 Weekly Blog 18.11.22

This week we have been busy with lots of different science activities. We have: discussed signs of Autumn, have started a daily weather chart, used our senses on our Autumn walk, tasted crisps, labelled our body parts and even investigated if you are the oldest in the class you will also be the tallest, as you get taller as you age. We discovered that just because you are older, it does not mean you are taller. We all grow at different rates and because we are all unique, we are all different height. This also linked with our RHE lesson about our bodies. We have also picked our class tree to observe through all of the seaons.

In Maths we have been comparing objects and saying if they are longer or shorter, we have loved all the practical activities and comparing a range of objects.

Staurt Robinson

We loved Wednesday, we were inspired by gold medallist wheelchair rugby champion Stuart Robinson. We supported Year 2 and loved cheering and waving our flags to encourage them to keep going with the activities. We were very resilient and kept going even when we found it difficult and were hot and tired. Reception and Nursery then came in to support us while we completed our challenges.  After the whole school came together for an assembly, where Stuart told us his amazing story of his determination and bravery. We all agree that anything is possible is you put your mind to it and do not give up! Please can you bring in sponsor forms and money in on Monday, thank you :).

We had our fourth KidSafe lesson this week. We discussed the importance of keeping our bodies safe and what to do if we have those yukky feelings. Please read the letter below to find out more.

We loved our PE session today we started our Gymnastic unit, we walked tall like gymnasts and performed a simple routine, four steps, a pencil roll, caterpillar walk and a jump. Miss Liddell and I were very impressed with the children’s routines.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 'Lest we Forget'

What a great start to the week, with our class assembly, all the children were brilliant. They were clear when saying their lines, didn’t need any reminders to come on the stage and sang beautifully. I am so proud of all the children, they all worked incredibly hard well done!

In Maths we have been busy leaning about odd and even numbers up to 10, we discovered that even numbers all have a pair and odd numbers have an odd one by itself. Ask your child if they can tell you about how they know a number is odd or even. We also compared objects using measurement, we set up different stations for the children to measure practically. We measured height, weight, length and distance.

We read the book Dangerous by Tim Warnes in English and learnt about nouns and adjectives. We used nouns to label things inside and outside our classroom. We all wrote adjectives for our main characters, we will use these next week to write sentences about Mole and Crocodile.

We have loved our Geography lessons this week, we discovered we live in the continent Europe, we found the UK on a world map and learnt about each country. What can you remember?

This morning, we gathered as a class to share a Remembrance Day prayer. We remembered those who have fallen in war and conflict and said prayers for all those who need our help around the world. We watched ‘Poppies’ and drew our own poppy fields. The children had a choice of using crayons, water pencils or oil pastels to create their artwork.

We had our third KidSafe lesson this week, where we learned all about how to keep ourselves safe when using technology. Please read the letter below to find out more.

Curriculum Evening

On Thursday 17th November at 6pm, we will be welcoming both parents and children into school for a Curriculum Evening where there will be a variety of interactive stations around school for you to engage with. These activities will share information regarding aspects of our curriculum, our school’s virtues and Read Write Inc Phonics.

This will be a wonderful evening and an exciting opportunity for you to learn more about our schools curriculum and how we can work together to support your child throughout their learning journey. We are really looking forward to coming together as a whole school community once again to share how we promote that love of learning in the children.

We hope you can make it!

I have been very impressed with the children learning their lines, and they have been working hard on making sure their voices are loud and clear, they have been brilliant!

As it was All Saints Day on Tuesday, we have been inspired by the Saints, we learnt about a different Saint each day: Saint Clare, Saint Pio, Saint Frances, Saint Martin and Saint Therese. We attended Mass on Tuesday to celebrate all the Saints . The children sat and sang beautifully and it was lovely to hear positive comments from other members of the church about our children.

The children are enjoying their phonics sessions and are making good progress, keep reading lots at home and please remember to bring reading folders in every day.

Today we discussed Fireworks and Bonfire Night and how we can all stay safe, we were excited to have Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 together. We enjoyed our creative activities and we learnt a poem!

In Art we learnt about Andy Goldsworthy and how he uses the environment to create his own art work. We went outside and created some wonderful art using resources we found outside.

Let’s Celebrate:

Well done to these children for super listening during our assembly practise, they know their lines, when to come on the stage and have supported the children around them.

Have a lovely weekend with Henry :).

 Reminders:

  • Our Class Assembly is on Tuesday 8th November at 9:10 for KS2 and 9:35 for EYFS and KS1, you can stay for both performances if you would like. Please continue to practise lines and songs.

  • On Friday 11th November, we will be visited in school by Stuart Robinson. Stuart is a gold medal-winning Paralympian, who represented GB in the recent Olympic games in wheelchair rugby.
Stuart’s visit is part of an event for Sports for Schools. This is an opportunity for the children to take part in a sporting event organised by Stuart, and to then hear about his story as part of an assembly. He will be with us all afternoon. This event is also an opportunity to raise money for our school - for PE, Sport and Active Learning.
The children have all brought a sponsor form home for them to collect as many sponsors as they can before the event next Friday. Please can all children come in their tracksuits on this day - Friday 11th November.

  • On Thursday 17th November at 6pm, we will be welcoming both parents and children into school for Curriculum Evening. We’ve been unable to hold the event for the last couple of years due to Covid, so we are looking forward to comingtogether as a whole school community once again to share how we promote that love of learning in our children. More information will be given about the evening.

Have a lovely weekend

It was a lovely start to the week, we celebrated the Harvest Mass together at church. The children sat and sang so beautifully and it was wonderful to see some of our food donations on the altar. Afterwards, we thought about those in our community who may need our help and reflected on how lucky we were to have lovely food.

Thank you to all the parents who joined me on Monday for Parent’s Day it was lovely to discuss how well the children and doing in school and the progress they are making. They have all setting in really well and we are enjoying our learning.

We have been Kiki Chameleons in English this week by creating our own story maps for Supertato. We then retold the story using our story map and made up our own actions. Didn’t we do a great job!

In Maths we have made groups of ten with lolly sticks and introduced doubling numbers up to 10, we played a dice game where we rolled the dice, drew the correct amount of dots in two boxes and worked out the double.

During our KidSafe lesson this week, we learnt about the word bullying and what it means. We used the acronym S.T.O.P. to help us to understand that bullying is when something happens Several Times On Purpose and they now know what to do if they ever feel they are being bullied and have those yukky feelings in their bodies. Please read the letter below to find out more.

I can’t believe that we have reached the end of our first half term already.

The children have worked very hard and have settled in well, they have particularly  enjoyed our topic Supertato and it has been wonderful to see all of their hard work at home. I am looking forward to our next half term and our Class Assembly and our Nativity performance.

Celebrations:

 Well done to these children:

Sadie Spider for determination in Read Write Inc

Bobby Bee for enthusiasm during lessons and working hard on putting her hand up when contributing to class discussions.

Well done to Eliza you are taking Henry home for half term for a brilliant week, you have worked hard and listened well during our input.

This half term there was an art competition for Harvest artwork, well done to our runners up and third place. Look on the art blog to see their amazing work.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 14.10.22

We have had another exciting week in Year 1.

In English we thought about how we could trap the Evil Pea. We had lots of great ideas such as hiding in the classroom and throwing a blanket over him, making a trap with a rope and net, we decided the best way would to be make jelly and trap him, like they do in the book.

We loved making jelly, we all worked hard together and then we wrote up the instructions. The next day we discovered that we had caught the Evil Pea Army. We had lots of ideas how they managed to get stuck in the jelly such as: using the jelly as a trampoline, singing with their eyes closed and not seeing the jelly and eating the jelly and getting stuck.

We have been counting up to 100 in Maths can you practise this at home? We have used the rekenreks and concrete apparatus to compare numbers up to 10. Using the language greater than, less than and equal to, to make these comparisons.

Also, this week, we started our Kidsafe programme  - A series of lessons which teach children about keeping themselves safe
This week, we focused on trust and completed a trust building exercise. We also thought about the Feelings we get when we are feeling sad, scared and/or worried and how we more listen to what our body is telling us. Please read the letter below, explaining this approach and the first lesson in more detail.

Our music lessons have been great we have loved learning this song and we were excited to record our performance for the blog.

Celebrations:

Well done to our awardees:

Bobby Bee: for super concentration and brilliant phonics work.

Lizzie Ladybird: for trying really hard during carpet input and feeling proud of yourself when completing independent work.

Henry is going home with this person, for being an enthusiastic learner especially during English you have used your phonics knowledge to support your reading and writing, well done.

 Reminders:

  • Thank you for all the donations of long life milk.

  • Parents’ Day on Monday 17th October. Have you booked your meeting?

Have a great weekend

What an exciting week, we though of questions to ask the Evil Pea and wrote them on our board. When we came back to school the next day he had visited our classroom again and answered all of our questions. We have been checking around school to make sure the Evil pea is not hiding. Some of us thought he may have come home with us and is hiding in our rooms! Watch out for the Evil Pea we are excited for next week, we are going to think about how we can catch the Evil Pea.

We also retold the Supertato and Evil Pea chase, we had lots of fun and used great language to retell the story.

In RE we thought about how people can spoil God’s world and we discussed how we can care for it, we all made posters to help encourage others to look after our world.

We have loved our practical Maths lessons, we have been comparing objects and working out which group has more than and which has fewer than. We discovered it was easier when we put the objects into a grid so we could see without having to counting them.

Celebrations:

Well done to our awardees:

Tommy Turtle for Jack trying new food every day at lunch, well done.

Cooper Crab you have done some excellent independent writing in English and we have loved your Supertato speech bubble independent writing in continuous provision.

Henry is going home with this person for working hard this week and coming into school with a big smile on her face. Well done.

Year 1 Blog 30.09.22

When we arrived a school we discovered a crime scene in our classroom, somebody had snuck in during the night and destroyed the fruit and vegetables! We noticed sand on the table and on the floor so we think the intruder came in from the back door!

We thought about how the fruit and vegetables would feel and why. We then decided we should make posters to see if anyone had information about the crime scene.

We put some of our posters up around the school, we let lots of people know what had happened in our classroom. So they can tell us if they find out any information.

In Maths we have loved completing lots of practical activities with numbers up to 10. We ordered them drew pictures to represent the number, counted out a specific number of objects, matched the words to the numerals and found the missing numbers.

During RE we have learnt about Adam and Eve we acted out the story. We thought deeply about why God was disappointed by their choices and thought of some questions to ask them:

  • Why did you listen to the bad serpent?

  • How did you feel when you ate the fruit?

  •  Why did you eat the fruit when God told you not to?

  • Why did you not listen to God?

  • Why did you hide from God after you ate the apple?

We thought of a time when we made a good choice and discussed it with the class.

Celebrations:

Well done to our awardees:

Tommy Turtle for having a go at being Eve in RE, you did a brilliant job well done!

Kiki Chameleon you were a super Mr Broccoli and gave some great answers to all the different questions. Well done!

Henry is going home with this person for always working hard, super listening on the carpet and for excellent work in his RWI sessions well done!
