Welcome to Year 5 2023!

A big hello from the Year 5 team. We hope you have had the most wonderful summer and we can’t wait to welcome you back into school on Monday.

What will I need to bring?

• Your own pencil case including a pencil, biro pen, sharpener, rubber and glue stick. Please can children stick to using regular equipment to limit distractions in lessons.

• Make sure your school uniforms and water bottles are labelled incase they go missing.

• A healthy snack for break times.

PE days

• Outdoor- Wednesday afternoon

• Indoor- Thursday morning

Art

Will be taught on Thursdays

Music

Will be on Monday afternoons. The children’s clarinets are already in school but they will need to remember on the weekend to bring them in regularly ready for Mondays.

Homework

Will go out on Friday afternoons, the same time as the weekly blog, and will be due in the following Thursday.

You are all invited to our Induction evening on Wednesday 13th September. This will be much different to last year, starting at 3:30 and finishing at 5:00. We would love for your child to show you around their new classroom, and for you to become more familiar with our school. You will also be able discover more about the exciting opportunities and topics that they will be learning during their time in Year 5. We will be in the classroom to answer any questions you may have! More information, such as important forms that will need completing will be available soon so please do keep checking the Year 5 page.

Homework for the holidays

Use this summer to prepare and film your House Captain speeches …The children are to film a House Captain speech ready to show the younger children in the second week back in September. On one of our transition days we watched great examples of effective speeches all made by previous Year 6 children. We were very inspired! We recognised that the speech needs to be inspirational, directed at the younger children, unique to us and enjoyable to watch, but must give us/ show us the reasons why they should be voted to be the next leader of their house! So remember to share your qualities, talents and the reasons why you would make a great House Captain! Could all videos please be emailed to Mrs Harrison the first week back in Year 6.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 20.7.23- ' We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams'- Roald Dahl

And here we are! The children have now officially finished Year 5 and now begin their journey as leaders of the school. It may have only been a short week but it surely has been jam-packed. The start of the week consisted of our performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- performing 4 times day and night. The children blew us away with their performances, showing such enthusiasm, effort and concentration-it truly was spectacular.

On Wednesday, we had our final PE lesson with a fun-filled activities- starting with some games of cat and mouse. Myself and Mr Murray then divided the class into two for a final end of year game of rounders.

Our last piece of learning took place this week with us focusing on debates. We divided the class into two and each took sides in debating whether homework should be banned or not.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 14.7.23- ' Performance art is about joy, about making something so wild that you can't put it into words'

Our last full week of the year! And it has been a fantastic and jam-packed week. We started the week with our clarinet music concert. It was brilliant to see all of the hard work that the children have put in this year - in a showcase to celebrate their efforts. The children were amazing with both their clarinets and their singing. I’m sure you parents though will be glad to see the back of those clarinets…

On Tuesday, the children finally got to test their cooking skills in DT as they made Spaghetti Bolognese. The children definitely looked the part and I hope that all of their creations were as delicious as they looked.

The rest of the week consisted of lots of play practice, ready for the first performance on Monday, where the children will perform in front of the school in the day and then for parents in the evening. The same again will take place on Tuesday. We wrapped up our final English and Maths units this week, with us focusing on bus and school timetables in statistics- luckily they won’t have any problems getting the bus to high school now! In English, we planned and wrote our discussion text- discussing if all children should learn to swim. The children got their wish as we will be turning the classroom into a debate hall as the two teams prepare their arguments. This is the focus of homework this week.

Charlie for being a co-operative learner: No matter the activity or the group of children you work with, you always strive to be an excellent team player- bringing calmness and love to the group. I have loved watching you play outside as well in different sporting activities as you never let the emotions of the game get the better of you- a role model in this regard.

Leo for being a creative learner: You have provided some excellent reasoning this half term during our discussion texts and arguments. You always develop your points and build on your reasoning (an excellent skill for Year 6).  Thinking outside of the box is not an easy skill but for you it just comes natural. I look forward to see you in our debates next week.

Anncia for being a focused learner: We may be at the very end of the year and lots of children have been getting giddy and losing focus throughout lessons- this is not you. Even having to do maths after play practice all day- you still remain on task and put 100% of your focus and effort into your work.

Virtue Butterflies: Our butterfly this week goes to Georgia for being intentional. Your commitment towards your role in the play has been a joy to see and you have been making good choices all throughout our practice sessions.

• End of Year Play- Will take place on Monday and Tuesday, starting at 6:30pm for parents. Please can all children arrive at school for 6:10pm. Children can come back to school in the evening in their own clothes and they will get changed in school.

• Library Books- Any library books that have been taken home from school need to be returned ASAP.

• End of Year Reports: Have gone home with the children today. Please check your child’s bag if they have not already made you aware.

• Growing Up Lesson: On Monday, boys and girls in Year 5/6 will be split for separate lessons on ‘growing up’. All children have been given a letter which explains this in further detail. If you have any questions regarding this, then please drop either myself or Mrs Gregan an email.

• Year 5/6 Sports Day- 3rd time lucky!!! The rescheduled date for our sports day is Tuesday- starting at 1:30pm.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 7.7.23- ' Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances'

Just 9 school days left now and yet there is still so much to come! It was a big week for the children as they had their transition into their new classroom for Year 6. With transition day taking place this morning, Year 5 secretly had their transition morning on Tuesday as Mrs Harrision, Mrs Webster and Mrs Barker introduced the life of Year 6. The children were full of excitement and were bursting with questions to ask their new teacher.

Our week has been taken over with lots of sessions in the hall- practicing for the Year 6 end of year play. The children have just thrown themselves into their roles and have loved taking part in such a big play. With the first performance taking place on Monday 17th July, I am really looking forward to see what the children can do on the big stage.

Learning is still flowing inside the classroom, with more debates and discussions taking place in English. We have had a look at what grammar skills are often found in these texts and have been practicing these so that the children will be comfortable using them in their own writing. Statistics have continued in Maths, with us looking at how information in tables is displayed and how we can interpret these. The children have found this interesting as we have looked at some real life statistics such as train stations and population across countries of the world.

In DT, the class have made their final preparations for their cooking lesson this upcoming Tuesday. The children have all gone home with their ingredients list- giving them enough time to prepare these and to bring into school next week. In History, we have been looking into what made Baghdad so special during the golden age. The children compared houses and trade routes from the UK and Baghdad and how they became so powerful.

Georgia for being a co-operative learner: You have been working really well in maths alongside your learning partner by bouncing your ideas off each other and contributing to group tasks. You are getting more and more confident with your maths and sometimes you just need someone to reason with and to discuss your thinking. Keep it up!

Daisy for being an enthusiastic learner: I can tell that you have loved your learning this year, simply because you are always on task. Straight away you’re getting your book, sat straight down and on with the learning. You understand that really focused tasks require the most attention and you also love taking part in group activities in our foundation subjects. Well done!

Betsy for being a focused learner: Managing distractions can be very hard to maintain across an entire school year but you have been able to do this. You don’t let others, who are not focused, to distract your learning- giving you the best chance to progress. This super focus will be important next year so keep this up.

Virtue Butterflies: Our butterfly this week goes to Leon. Your lovely comment towards Miss Nevis really made her day and cheered her up after a long busy day. You didn’t have to make that comment and nobody told you to but yet you went out of your way to say something positive to her.

• Eco-Day: On Friday( 14th July), we will be a fundrasing day to raise money for the eco-council. The children can bring a pound in to wear any green own clothes that they have. The money is to replace all of the bins around school- which have been there for over 10 years.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 30.6.23 ' Being happy is the greatest form of success'

Another week has flown by as we enter the final month of the school year! Just under 3 weeks left. The learning has continued as always with our final English and Maths units getting underway. In English, we have been looking at discussion texts and how these are similar to debates. The children have loved applying their rapid reasoning to debatable questions and we have been looking at how to build upon a point of view.

In Maths, we have started our topic of statistics and have been reading/interpreting line graphs. The children have been using their logical thinking to estimate data tables to find approximate answers.

In RE, we have finished researching about different religions of the world, focusing on the ‘Big 5’. We will then be comparing and contrasting the different religions and discuss how we are similar and different to other faiths around the world. We have been focusing particularly on Islam in our History lessons- specifically the rise of the Islamic empire in the 10th century.

Countdown to the music concert- which takes place on Monday 10th July at 2:15pm- is getting closer and the children’s preparation is running smoothly. We will have a mix of different roles such as our class clarinet playing, grouped clarinet playing, singing and some children playing different instruments.

Christian, Edi and Connor-Sean for being enthusiastic and focused learners: We are just under 3 weeks left from the end of the year and yet you boys are still super focused throughout lessons. Your enthusiasm for learning still thrives each day and you throw yourself into whatever task is set. You will definitely deserve your 6 week break. Keep this up in Year 6.

Virtue butterflies: This week our butterfly goes to Molly-Ann for being intentional. You have really been taking care of others around you when they are feeling down. You have consoled your classmates with care and kindness. A beautiful sight to see.

Tickets are now ready to go on sale for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There will be three performances that you can buy tickets for:

Monday 17th July - 6.30pm

Tuesday 17th July - 9.30am

Each family will be offered 3 tickets that can be used across the performances, not 3 tickets per performance. For example, you may request 1 ticket for Monday and then 2 tickets for the evening performance on Tuesday.

There will be a waiting list for any additional tickets. Tickets are £3 each - the maximum you need to pay on Parent Pay is £9. Please complete the form below indicating how many tickets you require. Please complete the form if you feel like you will require additional tickets. Do not pay for these yet.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 23.06.23 ' High school is about finding who you are because that's more important than trying to be someone else'

With only 4 weeks left of Year 5, things are certainly not slowing down as we have had another jam-packed week. As the year comes to a close, we have been starting our final topics of each subject and the children have had a taste of what some lessons in Year 6 are like with lots of independent work.

At the beginning of the week, we stepped up our music concert practice again as we prepare for the big day which is on Monday 10th July. We also finished our class novel of the ‘Windrush Child’, which focused on the migration of Jamaicans post world war two into England and the racial injustice that came from this.

The class also continued with their food tech lessons- this week having a tasting session of some of the foods that they are either going to use or make themselves.

On Thursday, we took another trip out of school as we went to St Bedes for a high school taster day- with all things Science & Technology. It was brilliant for the children to experience a day in the life of a high school pupil and for them to take in the surroundings of their own potential secondary school. The class was split into two groups, with one group going off into science and the other to technology. Food technology was the focus and the children got to practise their cooking skills as they made pizza whirls. It was a murder mystery for the science group where they explored the world of chemistry and carried out 3 mini experiments to work out who the killer was!

On Friday, some of our children got the opportunity to take part in the swimming Gala- an event that we have not had for years. Performing in front of a packed out crowd with lots of noise can be daunting- especially for a 10 year old- so the children did excellently to handle the pressure. We managed to qualify for 6 of the final events with 2 of our girls winning their semi- final races. I couldn’t be prouder of everyone who took part and I look forward to you competing again next year.

Lily-Mae for being an enthusiastic and focused learner: As we start another history topic, your enthusiasm and focus has sky rocketed yet again. Your hand is always up to answer a question or to share your knowledge with the class. Keep this up in Year 6!

Millie and Iris for being determined and brave learners: Even though you are both quiet girls when it comes to expressing yourself- your talents certainly overshadow this. Your performances in the swimming gala today were outstanding as you both came from behind in your races to win for our school. I expect to see you both their next year.

Virtue Butterflies: Christian has been chosen for being intentional. Christian has been spotted help calming down and cheering up his classmates when they have been angry and your calm and gentle approach really does make you an asset to our class.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 16.06.23 ' There is no such thing as impossible, only inprobable. The thing that limits us are the limits to our imagination'- Cressida Cowell

After a scorching two week break, we had no idea how the children were going to settle back in but they have been fantastic! As soon as they arrived back on Monday morning, they were straight back into the school routine and were eager to get on with the learning.

On Monday, we stepped up our preparation for our end of year music concert as we focused on practicing our chosen songs. The children are becoming really fluent with both the singing and playing side of the songs. The children have begun their next DT topic of food technology- don’t worry, the cooking won’t start for another couple of weeks. The children will be taste testing different foods over the next few weeks so if anyone has any issues regarding this then please email myself or Mrs Mather.

On Wednesday, We began our final RE topic of learning about other faiths around the world and focusing on the ‘Big 5’. This will also tie into our new History topic of Islamic Civilization. We also began our preparation for sports day in the form of athletics in PE. The children gave it their all in what was some very tricky running conditions- luckily we stayed hydrated and had lots of breaks in between.

Thursday saw us take our first trip of the summer and it was to the Winter Gardens for a special reading celebration. We were lucky enough to attend Cressida Cowell’s 20th anniversary of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’. The author and illustrator of the famous series shared her upbringing and journey towards becoming a world renowned writer and gave us some advice and inspiration of how to become a writer. The children all received a signed copy of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’- a limited edition including an unreleased additional story.

Nicola for being an enthusiastic and focused learner: Nicola, even at this point of the year, you are still super focused throughout all of our lessons and are ready to learn. Your eyes are always fixed on me when I am teaching and your hand is always up ready to share your knowledge. You have really set an example of how to engage in the lessons. Brilliant work!

Max for being an enthusiastic and brave learner: Ever since your performance on Wednesday night, teacher after teacher have come up to me to tell me how impressed they were with you. It takes a lot of bravery to perform on stage in front of lots of people but you did this with such enthusiasm and passion. The audience was blown away of how ‘in the moment’ you were and that resembles your commitment to any activity you are given.

Virtue butterflies: This week it goes to Harvey for being intentional. The class is fully aware that we have been low on stationary supplies recently which has meant that children have had to share equipment- the main one being glue sticks. Over the half term, Harvey went out and bought a full set of glue sticks (with his own money!) so that everyone had one which was such as lovely and thoughtful gesture.

• Gym Jam Jog: Is on Wednesday 21st June. Children are to come into school earlier in their pyjamas annd jog around the field. The children will then have lunch in the hall. This is a sponsored event and the money raised is going towards the school budget for building and extending the outside playground for the children so it would be great if everyone took part.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 19.05.23 'A picture paints a thousand words’

It has been weird to complete a normal working week at school, with all the bank holidays we’ve head, but we are here again at the end of another productive week with lots of learning. After two weeks without having one, our usual Monday routine continued with the exciting afternoon of Music and French. The children have continued to practice some previously learnt songs with the clarinets such as Blossom Blues and Eye of the Tiger, whilst also learning new songs simultaneously, this week it being the theme song to Jaws. We also started our new French topic of ‘French around the world’, with us focusing on directions, which led us to creating some French compasses to work our way around a treasure hunt.

In Maths, we have focused on both equivalent and simplifying fractions and how we can apply our times table knowledge to efficiently solve these calculations. The children’s attitude towards their maths work has been amazing to see as they are very keen to throw themselves into all sorts of problems and puzzles.

In English, we have continued with our topic of newspaper journalism and have been creating our first draft of our reports, based on our class novel of the Windrush Child. The children have been excited to put their own spin on their articles by choosing which newspaper to work for, creating catchy and interesting headlines and designing the layout of their newspaper.

We have continued to experiment with light in Science, to answer lots of key questions about how light travels. This week, we looked at if light could bend when travelling through the air. We then experimented to see how light would travel through liquids and we discovered how refraction works.

In Geography, we have started our new topic of North America in which the children’s retrieval skills and effort with their homework has allowed us to fly through the learning of this topic. We recapped the continents of the world and looked into the countries that make up North America. Ask your child at the weekend of how many can they remember.

On Thursday, we spent the morning at mass to celebrate Ascension Day. This was to celebrate when Jesus ascended up to heaven and left his spirit behind. This was also covered in our RE lessons, as we looked at examples of key figures within the church who lived with the spirit of Jesus within them and compared their actions to the Son of Christ. We finished the week with an art filled Friday morning, with the upper juniors having the opportunity to take part in a special art workshop, focusing on painting.

Dominic for being a co-operative learner: For always being a kind and considerate classmate towards every pupil. Your ability to be able to work alongside anyone, comes from your loving nature. This is also apparent in the playground, as you can play without any disruption and are attentive towards others.

Emilia for being a reflective learner: Emilia, your focus and drive to be discerning has allowed to you add high quality to your learning. You are keen to show your teachers through your writing of what you are capable of and this is only possible if you are a reflective learner. You always listen to and take the advice of the members of staff, whether that is in or out of the classroom.

An excellent learning quality to have!

Iris for being discerning: Iris, you are always listening to instructions and are the first one to carry out a task whenever it is set. You go the extra mile by always offering to help your fellow pupils and also members of staff. You are such a delight to have in our learning environment.

Franek- To keep up with our theme of being the eco-class of the school, one of our members of the eco-council has chosen to donate one of his plants at home, which has been placed in our environmental garden. What a generous and thoughtful action Franek.

• Preparing for the weather: With temperatures starting to increase, children are allowed to bring in a sunhat, which can be worn at break times and any suncream that is brought in must be applied by the child themselves. We also ask that no sunglasses are to be brought into the school. Thank you.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 12.05.23- ' Pressure makes diamonds'

It may have only been another 4 day week but the children have crammed in so much learning throughout the week. The children have been really engaged across all of our subjects this week, starting with English as we focus on newspaper journalism. The children have been learning the features of a newspaper and have been analysing some old newspaper articles to find these features. We will be linking this to our class novel, The Windrush Child, in which the children have already come up with some brilliant headlines.

We have continued with fractions in Maths and have been comparing fractions with different numerators and denominators whilst also linking this back to our adding and subtracting of mixed number fractions.

With the Year 6’s finishing their SAT’s this week, lots of pressure would of been flying around so we focused on ‘Feeling Under Pressure’ this week in HRE. We looked at what this means and the different types of pressure we go through in everyday life. The children analysed different drama scenarios and also created their own to display the different types.

In Geography, we finished our topic of rivers by looking at the formation of a waterfall and how erosion changes its formation. The children also created some fact files on some of the most famous waterfalls in the world such as Niagara Falls, Angel Falls and Iguazu Falls.

In Science, we have continued experimenting with light and continued building on our knowledge of how light travels in straight lines and how it reflects off objects. We tested if we could direct light in particular directions by reflecting off mirrors.

Tabby for being an enthusiastic learner: Tabby, it is common for this time of year for children to lose focus in their lessons but your level of concentration and enthusiam has maintained. I an always pick you out at any point during the lesson and you will be ready to answer the question. Brilliant work and keep this up for the remaining half term!

Leon for being a focused and co-operative learner: Leon, your change in focus and attitude towards your learning has blown your teachers away. You are engaging in all of our lessons and have shown some wonderful co-operation skills by being kind to your classmates and wanting to work in group activities. This has also allowed you to take more care with your work with your handwriting improving massively. Keep this up!

Anncia for being discerning: Anncia, you are someone who lives and breathes this virtue. Not a single child or teacher has a bad word to say about you because you are always making the right choice.

• Trip to Winter Gardens- Will take place on Thursday 15th June to see Cressida Cowell. Travel has been orgainised and we are finalising the payments, which are to be released on parent pay in the upcoming week.

• Music- Will be back to normal on Monday so children are to bring in their clarinets.

• Homework- Deadline is on a Thursday with Friday being available for children who have forgotten their homework. We have a homework club on Fridays for children to catch up on their homework, which is to prepare them for Year 6.

• LSA Open Evening- Lytham St Annes High School will be hosting an open evening for Year 5 families on Thursday 22nd June. A flyer which includes more details about the evening is currently being made and will be sent out to all parents as soon as possible.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 5.5.23 ' I believe passionately that everyone has a particular God-given ability'- King Charles III

It may have only been a four day week but life in Year 5 has still been full of excitement and learning. We began the week on Tuesday with the children’s usual mixed day of teachers and subjects, where they have four different subjects with four different teachers. On Wednesday, we continued with our outdoor PE unit of cricket. It is fair to say that we have been blessed with some brilliant weather whenever we now have outdoor PE, which both the children and teachers have appreciated. We have been breaking down the different roles within cricket and focusing on the technical points of each role. This week, we have been practicing drills with all three elements in as we look for some cricketers to play in our school tournament.

We have continued with our geography unit of rivers, with us taking a more practical approach to learning about the different types of erosion. The children could manage to show using just sugar cubes, water and a stirrer of how all 4 types of erosion take place. You will be glad to know that we did not let the children eat any of the sugar cubes but many did have sugar covered hands…

We finished our week in celebration with a coronation themed day, including picnics, patriotic colours, singing and lots of exciting activities. It was wonderful for the children to celebrate such a historic event, something that nobody in the school has experienced before. We began these celebrations on Thursday afternoon as we prepared our crowns and tiaras to wear for the picnic. We played various coronation themed games throughout the day such as crosswords, word searches and bingo. We had a special one off history lesson, which focused on the events of the coronation and discussed the key vocabulary, which prepped the children for both our assembly and the coronation itself.

Luckily, the weather was on our side, with the sun shining as the whole school had a coronation picnic, with each class pairing up with their buddy class.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 28.4.23 ' Develop a passion for learning and you'll never cease to grow'

Another end to another exciting week in Year 5. Learning across the curriculum has definitely been flowing this week with us starting the week off with RE. We have been looking at the different types of sins and the consequences they have and how we use our conscience to make decisions. We ended this lesson by putting their consciences to the test with an interactive game of moral dilemmas.

In Maths, we have continued with our topic of mixed number fractions and have been using models to compare fractions along with adding and subtracting mixed number fractions.

In English, we have started our new class novel of ‘The Windrush Child’ by Benjamin Zephaniah. This book carries a huge importance, based on a true story, of the history of slavery in our country and the ongoing issues of racism that take place today. We will be continuing to read through this novel in order to lead into our next writing topic.

We have continued learning about rivers in Geography and the children but their retrieval skills to the test by organising the course of a river based on their knowledge of the different stages and parts of a river. We looked into more details of how rivers are actually formed through erosion and transportation.

We also started our new Science topic of Light, a topic that the children covered at the end of Year 4, allowing the children to jump straight into this topic. We looked at our subject specific words for our topic and retrieved these from last year, along with experimenting how light travels.

Your inquisition has given you the pathway to investigate these ideas and to chase your learning. You have also contributed to class discussions and provided the class with some insightful knowledge.

Evan and Owen for being creative learners: For creating a wonderful display of our solar system! The time and effort that went into making this masterpiece just shows the passion that you have for your learning. I loved all of the small details that went into it and you really impressed the class with your model.

Virtue Butterflies: Our butterfly this week goes to Christian for being discerning. I never have to mention his name in class because he is always making the right choice and following every instruction.

• Bank Holidays- This Monday (1st May) and the following Monday (8th May) are bank holidays, therefore school will be closed.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 21.4.23 ' A true friend accepts who you are, but also helps you become who you should be'

Our first week into our final term! It has been brilliant to see the children again, in which they have settled in instantly as soon as they stepped foot back in the classroom. We jumped straight into our new maths topic of mixed number fractions. We have been really impressed with the children’s retrieval skills with their fractions, which has allowed us to jump straight into the work.

In RE, we have continued with our topic of ‘Reconciliation’ and have focused on the theme of forgiveness. We discussed different scenarios of disobedience and the process of forgiveness in order to reconcile our relationships.

We also began our Geography unit of Rivers. The children have been eager to begin this topic and have jumped straight into this. The children can already state the three stages of a river and recall many of the features of a river. The children loved using the geographical resources of the atlas’ to collect data on the rivers of the UK and the world.

We also had some visitors from Life Education for a HRE lesson about friendship and well-being. The children were fully engaged throughout the whole lesson which included film scenarios, discussion and drama.The children showed a real maturity surrounding the whole topic and really understood the importance of this.

Jay for being an enthusiastic and focused learner: Jay, you have blown me and Mrs Webster away with your excellent maths work this week. As each lesson goes by, you are more and more focused which has led to lots of progression. You are now showing a real enjoyment for maths, especially with fractions, which is a joy to see.

Angel for being a co-operative learner: For constantly showing that you are an excellent classmate, both in and out of the classroom. You are very considerate towards everyone in the class, making you a great learning partner. Your calm and kind temperament really helps diffuse situations and it shows others of how to deal with certain situations, especially during break times.

Virtue butterflies for being generous: This week, our virtue butterfly was actually a special headteacher award which was given to Leon. This was for being generous towards our younger pupils by helping them to tie their judo belts during this morning’s session, which shows that you are being a role model for the school.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 06.04.23 'Father, into my hands I commend my spirit' Jesus

We have arrived at our Easter holidays as we commend a very special week. We have started each morning in worship as each year group demonstrates a part of the Easter story chronologically. The WHOLE school community, including children, parents, teachers. governors and more were absolutely blown away by our performance of the crucifixion. I could not be prouder of everyone in our wonderful class as they all came together to perform such a wonderful worship. You all put in so much time at home rehearsing your lines and so much effort during our practices in showing your expression and meaning. The children have definitely shown qualities to show that they are ready for Year 6.

Emilia for being an enthusiastic learner: Emilia, you were highlighted many times throughout our practice sessions for speaking so clearly and meaningful throughout our worship assembly and you demonstrated this beautifully on the actual day. You really brought the powerfulness of the crucifixion with us in the hall.

Charlie for being a resilient learner: To carry out the role of Jesus, in the crucifixion, is a huge honour and yet such a difficult task. The many lines you rehearsed, whilst carrying such expression, were executed brilliantly due to your hard work and commitment to the role. To carry the cross for that long and to also bear it during the ending shows you are a resilient learner.

Leon for being a focused learner: The roles we had in the assembly were contrasting in comparsion of both drama and lines. Your role Leon had a more drama element to it, in which you executed perfectly. This could of led to complaceany or lack of focus because you had understood the importance of your role early on but you remained focus throughout all of our practices and during our performance.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 31.03.23 ' It is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind' Neil Armstrong

Oh what a week it has been. As we prepared for a normal working week on Monday, we got the famous phone call from Oftsted. Therefore, our timetable changed over the course of the next two days (thank you everyone for being so flexible) and we lost a couple of chances to practice for our assembly. I just wanted to say that the children were brilliant across the two days and were real ambassadors for our school. What made it even more special was that their behaviour and actions were no different to any other day, which just shows how great of a class they are!

We then got to finish our week with our trip to Liverpool! A trip that the children have been looking forward to for weeks. Even after delays on the motorway and a power cut at the museum, the children remained in high spirits and we still got to carry out our workshop at the museum. The children got to experience what it would be like as an astronaut and sat back in the planetarium and experienced the events of Apollo 11.

The second half of our day took place at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Both the adults and children were in awe of this amazing place of worship and the children were fascinated by all of the chapels, tapestries and monuments all around the Cathedral. We received some lovely comments from the volunteers and workers in the Cathedral about the children’s behaviour, inquisitiveness and attitude throughout our tour.

We then spent the rest of the week focusing on our Easter assembly, which takes place on Wednesday 5th April at 9:15am. Regardless of the time lost this week, the children have battled through adversity and have been making excellent progress.

Grateful and Gracious butterflies: Our butterfly this week goes towards the whole class for being grateful, due to the lovely comments received from the members of the Liverpool Cathedral about how pleasant the children were during the tour.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 24.03.23 ' Lent is about becoming, doing and changing'

As our Lenten journey continues, we have continued to contribute to to our Lent goals. On Thursday, we braved the tricky weather conditions and took a trip to church for mass, as we prepared ourselves for Easter. We went along side Year 1 and Year 2 and the children yet again showed us teachers how responsible they can be by helping our younger children walk down and sit alongside them throughout mass.

The following day saw us carry out our CAFOD fundraiser, where we decided to give something back to the community by completing a street clean along the Inner Prom. We could of not picked a better day for this as the weather was gorgoeous out on the sea front. It was great for the whole class to contribute to this activity, in which our eco-councilors used their experience to help guide the rest of the children.

We have also begun our Easter assembly preparations, with all roles being handed out and we have carried out our first script read and stage set up. Rehearsing our lines and knowing when to come in will take focus for homework for the remainder of the half term, in which some children have already begun learning their lines.

In Maths, we are coming to the end of our multiplication and division unit by finishing off mastering 3 digit x 2 digit numbers. This has been our biggest unit so far this year and the children's have worked incredibly hard.

In English, we begun writing our sci-fi stories and the children have been fully engaged in putting their plans into action and running away with their stories.

In PE, we have continued with our OAA teambuilding activities, with the children being poised with a challenge and are having to work in teams to solve problems.
