Reading

Continue reading and quizzing on books using the Accelerated Reading tabs in the ‘How to help your child’ section.

Also if you missed my blog before Easter, I have also signed all of the children up for a new reading resource called ‘Epic!’ reading. This resource is great as you can search for books depending on your child’s ZPD reading level and then you can access a quiz straight after reading the ebook. More information about how to use the resource can be found in the ‘How to help your child’ section. If you are interested in accessing the resource, please send me an email - l.woodend@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk and I will then be able to send you an invitation link for you to create an account.

English

I thought that I would try something different for English this week. Purple Mash has a brilliant resource called ‘Serial Mash’ which we now have access to. This week all of the English tasks will be based on a story called ‘Max and the pirates of Puddleton Bay’ which I have set in the children’s ‘to dos’ on Purple Mash each day. By clicking the ‘to do’, you will have access to that day’s chapter and then other activities linked to what the children have read.

Read Chapter 1 and complete the activities

There are however, other activities linked to the chapter that I haven’t set as ‘to dos’. If you would like to access these, including some great spelling, punctuation and grammar activities, simple log into Purple Mash and click on ‘Serial Mash’. Then click ‘Diamonds’ and then find this week’s story ‘Max and the pirates of Puddleton Bay’. Here you will find the extra activities not included in your child’s ‘to dos’. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Let me know how you get on!

Year 2 Home Learning Challenges for the week - Week Beginning 14.4.20

Good Morning Year 2!

I hope you are all well and had a truly wonderful Easter spending time together as a family. I hope that you also found time to pray in amongst all of that chocolate eating, and took time out to think about Jesus’ sacrifice for us at this time of year.

Are you ready for a new term of learning? I can’t quite believe that we have reached the Summer term! I am missing you all greatly and I am still hoping that we will get some time together before the end of the year. Please keep up that brilliant enthusiasm you all had before the Easter break, you were all working so hard. I can’t wait to receive photographs and updates of your first week back to learning.

Just as I did the week before we broke up, I will be posting English and Maths tasks daily, but other curriculum areas are posted below for you to dip in and out of as you please throughout the week. However, they should all be completed by Friday, ready for a new week of learning. I have attached a PDF version for you to access any links, and have also included the Geography and Science PDFs underneath.

Have a great week and continue to amaze your families with your focus and determination.

Stay safe,

Miss Woodend

Reading

Continue reading and quizzing on books using the Accelerated Reading tabs in the ‘How to help your child’ section.

English

It’s your final day of writing today and your chapter will be finished! I can’t wait to read them, so when you have finished your whole chapter, please do send them my way.

Today, you will be writing both the resolution and the conclusion. Don’t forget to use your plan as a guide and refer back to the structure of the original chapter in ‘The Museum Thief’.

Grammar focus for resolution:

Sentences containing subordination for time using ‘before’, ‘after’ and ‘when’. For example: After Stanley shouted for help, the police came and arrested the thieves. Don’t worry if you are unable to use all three of the subordinations in your writing - one or even two would be great!

Finally, use your plan to write the conclusion.

Grammar focus for conclusion:

subordination for reason using ‘if’ and subordinating conjunction ‘that’. For example: Stanley wouldn’t have been in the newspapers if he wasn’t so brave. The police were so impressed with Stanley that they asked him to work for them.

Now you have finished writing your chapter, feel free to enjoy the final chapter of Flat Stanley together.

Reading

Continue reading and quizzing on books using the Accelerated Reading tabs in the ‘How to help your child’ section.

English

Using the plan you created on Monday, write your problem/dilemma. Remember, this is the really exciting part of your chapter. Use super adjectives to describe the disguise and even try to use adverbs - silently, Stanley waited in the picture frame.

Grammar focus for the problem/dilemma - include commas to make a list. This would fit perfectly when describing the disguise - for example, Stanley was wearing a big, blonde curly wig, a stripy gown and was holding a cuddly teddy under his right arm.

Using the plan you created on Monday, write the build up of your chapter. Don’t forget all of those super verbs and adjectives to keep your chapter interesting and exciting. For example - using shouted instead of said, or gloomy instead of sad.

Grammar focus for the build up:

Use compound sentences in your chapter using ‘so’ and ‘or’ - Flat Stanley heard Mr Dart chatting in the lift so he came up with an idea. Stanley could go to the museum and help Mr Dart or he could stay at home and do nothing.

Reading

Continue reading and quizzing on books using the Accelerated Reading tabs in the ‘How to help your child’ section.

English

This week you are all going to become real ‘Creative Kiki Chameleons’ and write your own versions of the Flat Stanley chapter ‘The Museum Thieves’. Today I would like you to think carefully about what will happen in the five sections of your chapter - beginning, build up, problem/dilemma, conclusion, resolution.

Look carefully at the document attached below. I have used your ideas from last week’s learning to write what happens in the five sections of the chapter in the story. The next column in the table gives you prompts for your new version. The final column is for you to write your own ideas for your own chapter. Don’t worry if you are unable to print the planning sheet, just write out your new ideas in your English book. Be as creative as you can be, but don’t forget to use the original chapter as a guide. Remember, today you are not writing your chapter but are simply getting all of your ideas down. Have fun!

Year 2 Home Learning Challenges for the week

Good afternoon,

I hope you have all had a lovely weekend and are fully rested and ready for the week ahead!

As you know, learning from home is completely new to us all and us teachers are constantly evaluating the effectiveness of our home learning tasks set for the children. This week I thought I would try something a little different. Like I did last week, I will be posting Reading, English and Maths activities for the children to complete daily. However, any other activities that I would like the children to complete are shown on the image below. This means that you and your family can sit down and create a timetable of when you would like to complete the activities. You may choose to complete more than one in a day which will give you some free time on another day, or you may continue to complete one activity per day. It is entirely up you - this is your home learning! I have attached a PDF version of the challenges below as this will enable you to click on the links I have included.

Have a great week, and don’t forget to spend some special time as a family too!

English

Re-read chapter 4 of Flat Stanley. Thinking about the 5 main parts of a story, can you write:

What happened in the beginning? Introducing main characters and setting.
What happened in the build up? How do we know a problem is about to occur?
What happened in the problem? What is the problem? Is there a dilemma?
What happened in the resolution? How was the problem resolved?
What happened in the conclusion? How did the chapter end? Were the characters happy?

Reading

Enjoy the author Oliver Jeffers reading a story:

https://www.oliverjeffers.com/books#/abookaday/

Don’t forget to keep reading both independently and with an adult.

Maths

SumDog - I have set you a challenge to complete under the tasks section. You have until the end of the week to complete the tasks, but it would be great if you could complete them as I post them each day. Don’t forget that you can also continue to practise skills daily for fluency - check the task section on the left hand side of the screen.

Fractions

Throughout this week, please access the materials below:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/

This will recap the fraction learning we have done in class and will be great for any children who were off during the last week.

Money

Find different objects in your house that can become part of your shop.  Label them with amounts that are multiples of 10.  E.g. 10p, 20p, etc.  What can you buy with the coins that you found yesterday?  Take it in turns with an adult, one being the customer and one being the shop keeper.

PE

Tune in to The Body coach for ‘PE with Joe’ at 9 o’clock this morning, to get you warmed up for the day ahead. https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1

Also try a cosmic kids yoga session here - https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga

Science

We have been learning about how to look after ourselves and our bodies in science.  Think about what you need to do in order to brush your teeth properly.  Imagine you are writing instructions for an alien who has never brushed their teeth before.  What would the title of the instructions be? What will the aliens need? What will the step by step instructions be?

Have a great day Year 2!
