  2. This week in our story we got up to the part when the main character Clac found two strange beings- the green children- huddled together in a hollow pit. Can you draw, paint, create a picture that shows this first meeting and round the picture write the feelings of these characters. It would be great if we could use these to go around our English display!

Year 3 Home Learning 4.02.22

Spelling:

This weeks spelling strategy is: Jumble Words

Using plastic magnetic letter shapes, or individual letters written onto card or paper, first spell out the word, then scramble the letters into the pile and let your child assemble the word again. As they gain confidence, you can start with the word jumbled, and even have them assemble words from a letter pile.

This week we have focused on adding the suffix -ian

Maths:

This week the children have worked so hard on their bridging when subtracting. They have been learning the following strategy in school and need that extra reinforcement at home. We started using counters so they could visually see the two parts being taken away, so if you feel they still need this help then please feel free to use these raisons, grapes or even chocolate (good incentive!) are good substitutes.

This week we have continued to learn all about reconciliation. We want you to spend some time this week discussing times when you have had to ask for forgiveness and when you have had to forgive: How did you feel? How did you feel after saying sorry? How did the other person feel? How did they feel afterwards? What lessons did you learn.

In your homework book we would like you to share one of these memories, including some of the questions above… What happened? How did you feel? How did you other person feel? How was the problem resolved? How did you and your friend feel after? What lessons have you learnt?

Remember, not to include names instead you could write ‘friend’.

Say the word carefully focusing on each syllable.

Our spelling this week are based around adding -ation to the end of a word. Remember the rule that if the verb ends in ‘e’ we must drop the ‘e’ before adding ‘ation’.

During our Maths lessons it is clear that some children need extra work and practice with their number bonds to 10. Children should see that the pairs of numbers make 10 instantly and need consistent practice at this. Please could you practice these at home and can be done any time said out loud, maybe quick fire as you are travelling to and from school, while you are brushing your teeth, anywhere! There is also this great website which some children will be practicing on in the mornings- they even do an app for this game for tablets and phones:

PE

During PE we have started our striking and fielding unit of work. We started our first lesson this week, focusing on the underarm throw. We need more practice to make sure that we are passing the ball effectively and accurately in to the persons hands. Please get outside (where the weather allows) and get throwing different size balls underarm, furthering the distance of these passes as they get more confident.

There is also many different games you can play to develop accuracy , control and power when throwing this way, why not try them:

  • Throwing balls in to different size containers

  • Throwing the ball against a target on the wall

  • put a ball on top of a bucket and try to knock it off with a smaller ball

  • rolled up socks are good to use if the weather is bad, throwing them in to different sized containers.

Have fun with it, make it in to a competition!

We need to remember the following points when throwing underarm:

  • stand in the direction of the throw

  • one foot in front of the other

  • bring arm straight back

  • swing arm forward and release the ball

  • fingers point at the target

This week’s strategy is called ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’. 

 

This is probably the most common strategy used to learn spellings. 

Look – First look at the whole word carefully and if there is one part of the word that is difficult, look at that part in more detail. 

Say – Say the word as you look at it, using different ways of pronouncing it if that will make it more memorable. 

Cover – Cover the word.

Write –Write the word from memory, saying the word as you do so. 

Check – Have you got it right? If yes, try writing it again and again! If not, start again – look, say, cover, write, check.

Spellings:

This week's strategy is called ‘Quick write’. The aim is to write the word as many times as possible in one minute. Your child may look at the word to begin with but should be encouraged to memorise it towards the end of the one minute or as soon as they feel confident. 

Even though children are writing quickly they should still be encouraged to present work to a high standard. 

If you would like to extend the homework you may want your child to think, say and write one or more sentences with one or more of the words in. 

 Our spelling focus this week is adding the suffix -ous. When adding this suffix we sometimes need to change the root word and sometimes the root word remains the same. Remember, “Is there a letter I need to swap? Is there a letter to double or drop?”

This week we have started to look at main clauses and how these can be used as either a simple sentence or joined together using a coordinating conjunction. To help us remember the coordinating conjunctions, we use the term FANBOYS (please see below).

Draw around the words making a clear distinction in size where there are ascenders and descenders. Children need to look carefully at the shape of the word and the letters in each box. Then try to write the word making sure that you get the same shape.

You could then use your homework book to reflect on how you felt carrying out the job throughout the week and how you made your family feel too.

RE:

This week we have looked at the first sacrament we make as Christians, Baptism. I would really like it if the children could; bring in a photograph, write a special memory or draw a picture of their baptisms to share with the class on THURSDAY.

Science:

This week we have started to look at teeth. We have learnt that we have 4 different types of teeth: Incisors, canines, premolars and molars.

On purple mash I have set you a To do, please add the 4 different types of teeth that we have looked at (leave the last two boxes blank) and write the function of that type of tooth. A few of you may have already completed this as remote learning, for you this is optional, although, if you would like to complete it again, this time focusing on just the focus of the 4 types of teeth listed above, you will find the ‘to do’ set.

Optional History:

Some of you were interested in having a go at the hunter gatherer’s diary we discussed in our lessons. If you would like to have a go, please do and I will have a look at it, and maybe even share some of them in class. If you are interested, then a 2Do has been set up for you on Purple Mash, if not, then please ignore the 2do!
