Year 3 weekly blog 24.2.23 - "LENT: Prayer, Fasting, Penance, Sacrifice, Reconciliation, Almsgiving."

It was lovely to welcome the children back after their half term break, it certainly sounded as though lots of fantastic memories were created! We have jumped back into our electricity learning, and have been exploring more about how to make circuits using a power source and a range of components. It has been great to see the teamwork and perseverance as they have worked with determination to get each circuit to work.

We have also been putting our drama skills to the test as we have deepened our understanding of the difference between an accident and doing things deliberately. We learnt that doing things deliberately to hurt another person, doing things which God do not want us to do, is called a sin. The children worked in small groups to create a piece of drama which included either an accident or a sin, and the audience had to decide on which the group had demonstrated.

In maths this week we have been busy using our knowledge of multiples of 10 to reason and solve word problems. Again, we have been so impressed with the children confidence in explaining their reasoning! Mrs Hotchkiss has been in and out, quizzing us on our timetables, she is very impressed children, keep practising and spending time on TT Rockstars to keep this confidence growing.

On Wednesday we celebrated mass in school with Father Peter. We sang together and listened to a lovely piece of scripture read by our Head Girl. Following this we all received the ashes, each child doing so with great love and respect. As we now journey through lent together we aim to grow closer to Jesus through acts of kindness. I wonder what you have decided to do as a family this lent?

On Thursday I (Mrs Marshall) returned to school. What a wonderful first two days we have had already! I feel very fortunate that I get to teach your wonderful children again. We wasted no time in growing our brains and travelled back in time to 43AD as advisors to Emperor Claudius. The children weighed up whether it was a good or a bad idea to invade Britain and extend the Roman Empire. We will be finding out what Claudius decided to do next week…

Lent

As we journey through Lent we are raising money for CAFOD in school. This has started with the Lentern boxes which you so wonderfully created and swapped on Friday with nursery.

We have also decided as a class to walk to Ashton Gardens to raise money for CAFOD. The children are very excited at the prospect of doing some litter picking whilst we are there. This will be a lovely way to give generously to our community. More details to follow on when this will take place.

ART CLUB starts on Tuesday morning for the following children. Please be in school for 8am.

John Paul, Lily, Gus, Matilda, Bethany, Jacob, Daisy, Rory, Jiana, Hugo, Tilly, Teddy, Ciaran, Sean, William, Rose and Grace.

Certificates

For being a determined learner. William, you have been so brave with your learning this week. You have challenged your  brain in maths and have not been afraid to have a go. We know you can be just as resilient with your reading too! Well done William!

For being a focused and thoughtful learning partner. Finley, this week you have been a considerate learner and have gone above and beyond to help others learn. You were especially kind in Science, when you helped your learning partner with the experiment. Well done Finley!

Year 3 weekly blog - "Kindness is doing what you can, where you can, with what you have."

Our learning this week has been full of excitement and interest. We have been introduced to our science topic… electricity. The children could not wait to share their current knowledge about this topic. They also asked lots of great, curious questions which we hope to be able to answer over the coming lessons! We have already started to gain a greater awareness on energy sources, how some electrical items must be plugged into their power source, and others use a battery that stores the energy.

We have also had so much success in our computing lessons… we have certainly become much more confident when coding. This week we looked at how we could use timers when commanding an object to move. It was great fun!

We have taken to bridging over 100 in multiples of 10 this week, and learnt a fantastic method to make this super easy! The children were amazing each one was so focused to really make sure they grasped the method before setting off to use it with such confidence and enjoyment! I wonder: ask your child how they could answer 80 + 50, using the new bridging method. On Thursday and Friday we explored the relationship between multiplication and division - plus some really tricky word problems - good paired talk here!

In English we have really been developing our reading skills, using the punctuation to help us to read with understanding and expression. We have now read up to chapter 3 of Ice Cat, and we are once again, left desperate to read on! Along with our reading skills, we have also taken time to understand how we can use prepositions when writing, and each child has completed a lovely piece of writing, including lots of prepositions to explain how Tom built his ice cat. In geography we wrote our very own non-chronological report all about our a favourite artic animal. We challenged ourselves to use conjunctions to join up clauses!Well done everybody!

Finally, we started our class council with a beautiful worship based on the Beatitudes. We reflected on what makes us happy - then we listened to the words of Jesus and we could see that our happiness is connected to our relationships with one another and our God.

Have a blessed weekend.

Certificates

Well done to Joseph who keeps on trying and trying again- just like Sadie Spider. It is not what we do sometimes that matters it is how we tackle it the next time. Every small improvement leads to greater success

Well done Rory - we could give you every character Rory, you are focused, creative, determined and resilient. I just loved the way you explained how you had used a rhetorical question in your non-chronological report. Just great!

Reminders

Oline Safety day is coming up on Tuesday 7th February. Get ready by joining in the competition Mrs Gregan has set for the school.

Year 3 weekly blog 18.1.23 - "Be the reason someone smiles today."

It’s been another great week in class with lots of fantastic learning! On Monday many of the children couldn’t wait to share how they have been practicing their 8 times tables, we must say, you have been very creative in finding fun and effective ways to help remember these number facts!

This week in RE we have been focusing on understanding the Hail Mary. We have had a great discussion about the meaning of this prayer, and how we are able to say this prayer whenever we find ourselves wanting help from our Mother Mary. We have been very enthusiastic to create our own acts of prayer and liturgy in small groups. Each group needed to decide on what theme their worship would be about, what piece of scripture they could read to highlight their theme and a reflection for their friends to take part in. They will invite the rest of their class friends into their worships over the coming weeks. We are sure these will be such special moments to look forward to each week.

In our English learning we have discovered our ‘reading brains’. This is a reading strategy that allows us to make connections in what we have read, and remember the key points and the order of the story. We created a big spider diagram to share what has happened in chapter 1 of our book, ‘Ice Cat’. We discussed how it is always important when reading to create our own reading brain, to help us remember and fully understand what we are reading. We have also moved on to chapter 2, which we read on Tuesday. This Chapter taught us a lot about the main character Tom and his Dad, who we read is very poorly. Together, we thought carefully about how Tom was feeling from what the author tells us, we used the text for our evidence. We cannot wait to read the next chapter next week!

Mrs Hotchkiss swooped in on Thursday and Friday and the children are really rocking those 8 timestable facts. They have also explored 10 different artic animals researching them ready to write a non chronological report on them next week!! In dance, we completed phrase one of our Stone Age performance - hunting down two woolly mammoths! In Music we learnt a new upbeat song - we now need to perfect our recorder playing to go with it!

Certificates

Jiana you have been  a super focused Kuba Crab - both Miss Bassett and Mrs Hotchkiss could see how hard you have worked. It is great to see you thinking deeply and expressing your ideas on your wipeboard for the teachers to see. Keep up the good work!

Daisy- what enthusiasm! You brim with a love of learning, you’re quick to make links and find the solution to a problem. You have really controlled your desire to shout out - you have been just brilliant ! Well done for using your super neat handwriting too - all the time!

Reminders

Lip Balms and creams for chapped skin are considered medical in school and need to be in the care of the class teacher. Please ask your child to hand the item to the teacher and the teacher will allow them to administer. It is very important that children do not share these items - thank you for your help in this matter.

Homework Must be handed in by/on Thursday ready to go back out on Friday.

PE remains Monday and Friday. It is cold at the moment so a beanie/bobble hat for PE Monday would be great.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Miss Bassett, Mrs Hotchkiss, Mrs Barker, Mrs Carter and Mrs Connelly.

Wishing you all a happy and Holy Christmas...

On behalf of us all we would like to say huge thank you for the constant trust and support you have given us! We wish you all the most wonderful and Holy Christmas, enjoy some rest and special time with friends and family.

Enjoy and remember …. we will be in touch to share with you how we are getting on.

When we come back from the holidays, we welcome Mrs Hotchkiss! We are all so excited to have you in our Year 3 team and we know that you are very excited to be back in the classroom too. Mrs Hotchkiss will be teaching our wonderful children on Thursdays and Fridays. Miss Bassett will now be teaching on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Year 3 - "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear." - Will Ferrell

What a fun way to end our week! It was wonderful to see all of the Key Stage 2 children making such lovely Christmas memories during our Christmas party today. The singing, and roaring laughter filled the school with Christmas cheer! All of the children had a wail of a time playing musical statues, pass the parcel, silent footsteps … and who can forget those cheeky forfeits!

We had another beautiful moment yesterday as we performed our Christmas carol concert! The nerves started to grow as we walked to church, but as soon as the music started the children were ready to share the Christmas story with such enthusiasm and pride. It was absolutely beautiful and certainly brought a tear (or ten) to my eye!

Along with all of the festivities, we have been cracking on with our dragon writing. We are prepped and ready to go for our big independent write on Monday! We aim to put all of our learning to good use, so that together, we can create a ‘Dragon Hunters guide’. The children have shared with one another their homework from last week, and have discussed the dragons that they have spotted in recent weeks. We have also spent time discussing key features of non-chronological reports and we plan on using this knowledge, along with our growing grammar and vocabulary, to help us when we write our own non-chronological report about our dragons!

Reminders:

  • Please bring a carrier bag with you on Monday as we will be clearing out our trays and sending bits and pieces home.

  • Christmas dinner is on Monday next week.

  • Next week we break up at 2pm on Tuesday.

Wishing you the most wonderful, Holy and happy Christmas.

Your ever growing Year 3 team xxx

Year 3 Weekly blog 9.12.22 - "Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are."

It is hard to believe that we are already beginning the third week of advent! It is important that we pause and reflect on our advent journeys thus far. A huge part of our journey in Year 3 has been to always think of the impact our actions have on those around us… When we tell you how touching it is to see our class come together on the altar, helping one another and singing with such passion… it is simply beautiful. We know that when you watch them next week you will be filled with joy!

When in the classroom we have been sharing the children’s all important home learning. Our children set off with great enthusiasm and interest to create meaningful pieces of artwork relating to our learning of the Annunciation of Mary, using the artwork that has already been created to represent this special moment in our Catholic faith. It was wonderful to watch the children discuss the research that they had accomplished at home, sharing their ideas with one another and discussing why they had chosen to include certain key features in their artwork. We look forward to sharing this with you in the future.

Let’s Celebrate…. Congratulations to John Paul and Tommy who receive the certificates this week. John Paul you receive an enthusiastic Bobby Bee certificate. You always participate in lessons with such enthusiasm and interest. You love to share your ideas with others and you have been really quick and excited when playing out maths times tables games. Keep up the good work John Paul. Well done! Tommy, you receive a Co-operative Roger Robin certificate. You are a kind and thoughtful friend and you like to be helpful in class. These little acts of kindness are always appreciated Tommy, thank you, they don’t go unnoticed.

Scarlet Fever and Group Strep A Infections - Guidance

Dear all,

There is growing concern amongst the community regarding iGas/Scarlet Fever, we have placed here the guidance school has received to share with you. Thank you for always communicating with us illnesses and absences. This is so important as it helps us to build a picture of the whole community and from this we are able to take any action should it be required.

Year 3 Weekly Blog 2.12.22 - "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it."

What a wonderful way to end our week, a trip to the panto! We had a great time with year 4 and have come back feeling full of Christmas cheer!

We’ve had a busy week and have continued to deepen our understanding of numbers that added together make one hundred. We have been using 100 square grids to help us with this. I wonder Year 3, how confident can you share the method we have learnt this week to answer this sum: 26 + 74 (remember first to make 10 ones-show your family members how we partition these numbers to help us).

We have also welcomed a new member to our class, a rather shy, yet mischievous dragon. He heard that we were learning about dragons and thought we might be able to take good care of him. He likes to fly around the classroom when we aren’t there! I wonder where we might find him next week… (Extra homework-what could we name our class dragon?) We have been finding out many facts about dragons and have used last week’s homework to write questions to each other about their own dragon sightings.

Let’s Celebrate…

Gus for being a focused Cooper Crab! We have been SO impressed with your effort towards your maths and English learning this week! You thought of so many wonderful questions to discover more about dragons and your presentation was great too! Keep it up Gus, you have really impressed us!

William for being a keep improving Lizzie Ladybird! We have loved to see you reaching for the stars this week, improving your ideas and not giving up when things get tricky! You are trying really hard with your reading skills and have have focused carefully in maths to understand numbers that make 100. Well done William!

Reminders:

  • Next week we will be busy with rehearsals to church. Please make sure your child brings a warm coat and hat ALL week.

  • On Wednesday we are walking to Church with Year 1 and Year 5 to celebrate mass together this advent. Once again they will need warm clothing to walk to and from church.

  • Christmas cards: As we have done in previous years, we kindly ask that instead of writing individual Christmas cards for the class, we use this money to raise money for Brian House. You can, if you wish, make a whole class card that we can display in our classroom.

  • Our Christmas performance is in church on Thursday 15th December at 2pm and 7pm.

  • Friday 16th December Key Stage 2 Christmas party. Children can come to school in party clothes and sensible shoes. They can bring a non fizzy drink and a small snack such as chocolate or a packet of crisps.

Year 3 Weekly Blog 25.11.22 - "Hope is but the dream of those who wake."

As we begin our journey through Advent, we have all created our own Advent promises. These are things that we will aim to do during these weeks before Christmas… our gift to Jesus. We hope to help make our world a better place, some of us are starting with helping our families somehow, others are being more mindful about worldly issues such as helping keep wildlife safe through picking up of litter. Please ask your child what they have decided they want to do this Advent… maybe this is something you could do as a family.

We have continued to be super excited to discover more about dragons in English! This week we have looked closely at a dragon which has been spotted in the North-West, the Manchester Ridge-back. We have looked closely at the non-chronological report, made a story map to help us remember the key information, created detailed diagrams and discovered what the key features are of this non-chronological report. We have certainly been busy!

On Wednesday the children came buzzing back from their art lesson. Each child has helped to create the most wonderful Christmas village, by upcycling different plastic and cardboard items. It is lovely to see their creativity and how they have chosen to represent different things. I am sure that you will be seeing their creations in a few weeks time when they are proudly brought home at the end of the term.

Let’s celebrate…

Charlotte for being a … Brave and Co-operative learner! We were so proud to watch you this week, working alongside your learning partners so beautifully. It was lovely to hear you reflect on your math learning on Tuesday and Thursday. You shared with the class how your partner had helped you with a tricky challenge and explained how much you valued this co-operation. You have taken on challenges this week and really pushed yourself. Well done Charlotte!

Hugo for being a … Co-operative learner! You are so thoughtful Hugo and have shown this even more this week! You are able to think of others and how they are feeling, finding solutions so that others feel happy and valued. When moving places this week you noticed that a friend felt more comfortable in your space, you recognised this and selflessly asked to find another seat, this was so kind and helpful! You are a great learning partner and your kind actions help to make our classroom a happy place. Thank you Hugo!

Reminders

There are many exciting events coming up so make sure you keep looking out for important information!

  • Next Friday 2nd December, we are going to watch Sleeping Beauty at the parish centre with the Year 4 class. The cost of this is £5 and is on parentpay. We will be late back to school, approximately 4:00pm.

  • Our Christmas performance is in church on Thursday 15th December at 2pm and 7pm. You will notice that your main task in homework this week is to focus on practising the first 3 hymns ready for rehearsals to begin!

Year 3 blog - "The is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about."

What a week! Firstly we would like to say a huge thank you for supporting all of the extra activities that have been going on in school this week! The buzz around school has been fantastic and seeing our school community come together again has brought such happiness to us all! The children were SO excited on Wednesday when we welcomed Stuart Robinson into school. They all took part in a tricky exercise class, cheered on another class and listened beautifully to Stuart’s inspiring talk during an assembly. Thank you for being so organised with your sponsor forms, it is amazing to see the amounts that have been raised.

We have also had some really exciting moments in class as we continued our English learning about dragons! Many of our children have been looking out for any clues or signs that dragons are in our area. We have carried out interviews and have even created our own news reports which we hope to film next week.

Thank you to all of you who managed to come along to our school Curriculum evening. It was great to see you all in the school, joining in activities and discovering more about our school virtues.

Let’s celebrate…

Well done ro Louis and Logan for getting this week’s vertificates.

Logan you get a Bobby Bee Certificate for being so enthusiastic and excited about your learning. We love it when you want to share your thoughts and ideas.with your learning partner and the rest of the class. Well done, keep up the good work.

Louis you get a Cooper Crab certificate for being a focused learner in Maths this week. You have really concentrated well and this has shown in the answers that you have given and the work that you have completed. Well done. Being focused is so important in the process of learning.

Reminders

Please can you check sweatshirts and cardigans. We have a couple that have been misplaced and a couple of unnamed ones left in the classroom. If your child has picked up the wrong one, please could you return it and ask your child to check to see if theirs is in class. Many thanks.

We hope that you all have a wonderful weekend.

Miss Bassett, Miss Brisco, Miss Russell and Mrs Carter.

Year 3 Blog 11.11.22 - "I wear a little poppy, as red as it can be, to show that I remember, those who fought for me."

I can’t believe we are at the end of the week, it has absolutely flown! Throughout the week the children have been super focused in maths and we are now much more confident with our two subtracting strategies. It has been wonderful to hear the children share with one another how they got to the answer, these discussions are becoming more and more filled with fantastic vocabulary and understanding.

We have also started our exciting new English learning, which is all about DRAGONS! Together we looked at some reported sightings and read a very interesting non chronological report about the Manchester Ridge-Back. Miss Russell couldn’t wait to start reading to the children the first chapter of our class novel, The Boy Who Grew Dragons… I wonder what might happen next….

In History we have continued our learning about the Stone Age. The children have been reading an interesting article and have used the computers to note down all of the interesting new facts they had discovered through their reading!

Let’s celebrate…

Tilly S receives a Tommy Turtle Certificate for being a brave learner this week. Well done Tilly you are always ready to challenge yourself and have a go at your learning. Keep up the good work, be brave and see how much you are achieving.

Toby receives a combination certificate this week for being a focused Cooper Crab and a co-operative Roger Robin. Well done Toby, we love the way that you are always ready to get on with your work and manage any distractions. You are also such a lovely learning partner.

Year 3 Weekly Blog 4.11.22 - "Dream big, sparkle more, shine bright."

On Monday we welcomed everybody back as we began our new half term. I must admit that this half term is up there with my favourites! During the coming weeks we will begin to prepare for Advent and Christmas and there are so many exciting events to look forward to! It is always such a magical time in school and one which will be all the more special after missing out on these events in the recent years.

We have jumped straight back into our maths learning, this week focusing on subtracting through the ten. We have been learning a strategy very similar to our addition work before the half term. When looking at a sum such as 14 - 5, the children have been partitioning the 5 into 2 parts… I wonder if you could ask your child what 2 parts we would split the number 5 into in the example above and why?

On Tuesday we walked to church to celebrate the feast of All Saints. The children found it really interesting to learn a little more about All Hallows eve and how this leads into our Christian feast days of All Saints and All Souls. The following day, as it was All Souls day, we spent time to pray for our loved ones who are up in heaven. The children listened to each other as they shared their own intentions and was such a calm, prayerful and special part of our week!

We have also started our new history topic, STONE AGE. We started off by thinking about a world without our favourite foods, activities and transport… the disappointment when we thought of a world without pizza was one almost too much to bare! Following this we then looked closely at a picture which represented that of the stone age. The children used this picture to discover more about how Mankind lived during this time, many great, inquisitive questions were asked! It was great to see the children’s fascination towards our new history topic, we cannot wait to find out more and to become Stone age experts.

Finally, this weekend many of us will celebrate Bonfire night and so, on Friday the children have been thinking about how we can stay safe and have fun this weekend. I wonder what they can remember?

Let’s celebrate!

Both Seth and Jacob - Our Co-operative and Focused learners!

This week we have chosen a pair of children who have been learning partners throughout the week. They have worked together beautifully, encouraging one another to be the best learner they can be. It has been a delight to watch the pair of you support each other! Well done boys!

On Friday 11th November, we will be visited in school by Stuart Robinson. Stuart is a gold medal winning Paralympian, who represented GB in the recent Olympic games in wheel-chair rugby.

Stuart’s visit is part of an event for Sports for Schools. This is an opportunity for the children to take part in a sporting event organised by Stuart, and to then hear about his story as part of an assembly. He will be with us all afternoon. This event is also an opportunity to raise money for our school - for PE, Sport and Active Learning.

The children have all brought a sponsor form home for them to collect as many sponsors as they can before the event next Friday.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend!
Miss Bassett, Miss Brisco, Miss Russell and Mrs Carter

Year 3 Weekly Blog 20.10.22 - "Autumn is the season that teaches us that change can be beautiful."

And so we have reached the end of our first half term. To say the time has flown by is a slight understatement! We started our week with a visit to church to celebrate the Harvest festival and what a lovely start to the week this was. Thank you again for your generosity, collecting tins which will already be on their way to help those who need it! It was just wonderful to hear our children celebrating mass, joining in responses and singing away to the hymn “Freely, Freely…” our final hymn during the mass.

Following this we through ourselves back into rehearsing for our assembly. The children were very excited to share their assembly with you all and, although the nerves were there at the beginning, the feeling afterward they had performed was of great elation. I always find watching the children help and support one another during their performances so heart warming and find myself holding back the tears. We were so proud of each and every one of them!

The children have also had their creative hats on, setting to work on writing their own fables. Seeing our children enthusiastically get their ideas down on paper was wonderful and hearing them proudly sharing with each other their opening sentences led me to do a happy dance… what is a teacher to do when she hears such great vocabulary?!

Let’s celebrate

Louis for being a Concentrating Cooper crab: Louis you have shown such focus this week! We were so proud of you and how you learnt your assembly part, becoming so confident in delivering your lines and helping others too! You have also shown this same focus within our lessons and have completed a wonderful piece of writing. Keep it up Louis, we are SO impressed!

Toby for also being a Concentrating Cooper crab: Toby you always show great interest and determination when learning something new. You focus carefully during our class discussions and always show great enthusiasm when faced with a challenge. You look carefully to solve problems and it is always such a special moment when we see the happiness spread across your face once you have solved a problem. Well done Toby!

Reminders

  • After school club for Year 3 commence on the first Tuesday back (1st November) and will be from 3:30 until 4:15. Please find the list below to see for the children who have signed up.

  • Mass: On Tuesday 1st November we will be heading to church to celebrate All Souls day.

Finally…

A big thank you for taking the time to discuss your child’s first half term in year 3 and how we can work together to best support them going forward. We really appreciate you taking the time out of your day for these discussions and it was, as always, a pleasure to get to chat with you all!

We hope you all have a very well deserved half term and we very much look forward to seeing the children on Monday 31st October as we begin the second half to our Autumn term together.

God bless,

Miss Bassett, Miss Brisco, Miss Russell and Mrs Carter.

Year 3 Blog 14.10.22 "T.E.A.M: Together, Everyone, Achieves, More."

Our week has certainly been a busy one! Along with our usual learning we have been rehearsing for our assembly next week. It has been wonderful to watch each child slowly grow in confidence, becoming louder, clearer and adding emotion and expression to their parts. The assembly really is coming to life! The teamwork during our practices has been what has really stood out to us. I am sure this is something you will notice too when you watch us next week.

We have continued our bridging over the 10s boundary. We have looked at this in many ways and have also learnt different strategies to help us to solve these problems. I wonder if your child could tell you about how we can use the part-whole model and how we partition the number to help us to bridge over the 10? Do they remember that we need to first make 10 and then add the other part?

In English we have been kept very busy by completing our guided writing this week! The children have had a wail of a time using their creative and inquisitive minds to find new vocabulary and including this into their writing. We certainly have lots of word wizards!

Let’s celebrate
